I-LOG: There are some great games that you can get in most Linux repositories. They are 0ad, minetest, freedroidrpg, and jag. The repository also has scummvm, and openmw, pcsxr, pcsx2:i386, to help you play other games. Every 6 to 8 months I will go into synaptic package manager and look in the 3 'games and amusement' sections to see if anything new has become available. Sometimes I will browse the flatpak, and snap stores. I switched to Linux 15 years ago and never looked back.

Great video. I have used Linux as desktop from 2008 to something like 2012.. And from 2017 to today. PulseAudio is good, i never had big issues with it, like You said. But pipewire.. is still new, and had issues with it. But pipewire has a pulseaudio emulation layer, so apps that only compatible with pulseaudio can work with pipewire, until they support pipewire natively. If You had problems with audio on windows too, it may be a hardware issue, and not a pulseaudio issue. Try both with a cheap USB audio "card", maybe it's the hw.

Can you run the full range of the Microsoft Office programs under Linux without any restrictions/limitations or compatibility issues? Not interested in coulds/shoulds but hard evidence or practical experience that it is possible. I know that there are interchangeable formats for Word and Excell (although there are limitations) but can you run Outlook under Linux or import Outlook files into a Linux mail app that looks and feels more or less like MS Outlook? A question I have asked Linux proponents on many occasions but to no avail.

I use Mint for Office work. Ubuntu for casual internet browsing on two separate NVMe drives. Both work just fine on 2019, 8 core (AMD 3800X) that used to run windows 10. Also have a R-9 380. The 2017 6 core AMD it replaced would probably function equally well. If no other reason than Linux is that efficient. AS for win 10? Have it on another drive. Not sure if even works. Been 18+ months since I last booted it. Newer stuff: A 8700G could be about the same for a lot less spent. Plus if you need wifi /bluetooth $269 for the motherboard and 8700G APU $329, memory $80 per 16Gb. NVMe 1Tb $195. Way cheaper than a Mac Pro and as good. Also for less than a Dell XPS pro equivalent with Win 11. Also the AMD APU cooler included works fine. ( the included AMD cooler? cools the 3800X 105 watt sucker. Also works well when you under clock it ) If you have a old case to put it in. Won't need much cooling. Neither are a bragolicious game rig. Are more than good for what I do. Quiet is good. But I won't be buying a 8700G. Already have a equivalent pile of paid for silicon

So every once in a while I used to try Linux just to see what it looked like but would stick with windows. This year I loaded up Linux mint and I was very surprised how well it ran. I ran Libre office as my office package so I was used to that and windows. So I figured it was time to finally migrate to Linux and I’m finally done with windows. Ya you got to get use to command lines again but I use to love doing things in Dos so learning a few more command lines was not a big deal! I now run Linux as my work computer because I was tired of our IT department locking down our computers so bad that you couldn’t even install a printer driver without them going remote on your system. I’ve built my own computer since the days of the old XT machines and there’s nothing that our IT can pull over me! lol…. Don’t ever be afraid of trying something new, you just might find that it’s not so difficult to change. And what I like is that you can customize you system to how YOU want it! Sorry for my rambling…. lol. Good video! Cheers…..

I tried out just about every operating system released in the past 30 years, but stuck with XP and 7 to this very day. Got 10 running on a test machine but not bothered with it much. Tried a few Linux distros from time to time too, but hardware support is poor and audio and video is weak compared to Windows. That being said yesterday I downloaded a Linux distro called AV Linux MX Edition (AVL-MXe), which is designed from the ground up for audio and video applications. The developer seems very passionate and driven about his this and its been around a long time apparently.

Just replace pulseaudio with pipewire. This is the command for Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint: sudo apt install pipewire-audio Nothing more to do (maybe reboot), it also automatically removes pulseaudio. Say yes if it asks you.

I'm surprised you're having trouble with pulseaudio, that was pretty stable for normal desktop use however, running a DAW would usually require JACK and you can't run Pulse and Jack concurrently, only one or the other, so perhaps that is the cause of your issues? I've been running pipewire for quite some time now and have had no issues with it, and it handles pulse and JACK applications concurrently and that seems to work fine too. Pipewire comes with it's own session manager but it's pretty basic and requires some manual configuration to get it working, however, it's best to install the Wireplumber session manager with Pipewire, maybe you did do that but it won't happen automatically, Wireplumber is not a dependency of Pipewire, and Wireplumber usually works straight out of the box. Note that Wireplumber 0.5 is out soon or out now, not sure, but this new version has some worthwhile improvements. Anyway, good luck with your Linux adventure, you might not realize it now but with experience you will grow to love it and wonder why you ever tolerated that "other stuff" :-)

You may try openSUSE by downloading an ISO and using "dd" command to make a bootable flash drive. I don't like pulseaudio and usually I strip it off in favor of alsa. Mint was a great choice and it's the most user-friendly flavor of GNU/Linux. Cheers!

I switched to Linux from MSDOS+Windows 3.1 in the mid 1990's at home and at work. As an IT teacher my main apps were word processing, presentation building (StarOffice - forerunner of LibreOffice), 2D drawing (xFig, still use it) text editing (vi/vim/gvim still used). I used Gopher, WAIS, FTP, Archie, and Pine Mail in the early days of the Internet. When the WWW became available I used Mosaic and Lynx browsers. I had 2 monitors on my computer and had to make my own X config file. Desktop was FVWM switching to KDE when it came along. In the early days of KDE and GNOME I found KDE much more stable then GNOME. I still use KDE. (Lots of fun stuff all these young kids have missed.) I tried Cinnamon briefly and found it rather lame compared to KDE. I don't recall the earliest distro I used but switched to RedHat, then Fedora for many years. I got tired of the frequent upgrades and all the necessary tweaking so switched to Mint several years ago with LTS and easy installs and upgrades. I have Kubuntu on a laptop. Also Mint/XFCE on a really old Dell machine with quite limited resources. It was retired just a couple of weeks ago as it was way too slow with the recent upgrade to Mint 21. The only sound issue I have ever had was on that old Dell. It had a full height TV tuner card in it. It took lots of experimenting to get TVTime to play the sound. Video was fine. Finally found the right config. Same problem on Mint 21 but the same fix did not work. Finally gave up. May try again later. Linux Mint has been good for me. Welcome to the Mint family.

People need to understand that the choice of an operating system is more than just an individual's subjective decision. There may be very few specific cases, where people really cannot switch away from Windows, or even worse macOS. But it's mandatory to not support these enterprises in bagging the whole world, because this already *has* very intense and problematic influence on our all daily lives, even on a global level and with their influence growing it''s to become really dangerous. They are effectively hating and fighting democray and freedom. And: Yes, Linux is not the ultimate solution, either. It simly happens to be the next lesser evil currently, and probably for the next few decades, as actually useable new operating systems don't grow on trees. People using Windows or macOS any longer (without an impossible to workaround reason, like special hardware drivers not available on Linux for example) are irresponsible idiots and should be punched in the face by anyone they encounter all the time. Btw: Pipewire is not what was hoped for by many people. I actualyl switched back from Pipewire to Pulse because of a collection of litly but very annoying issues, like default volume fpr some applications having become stuck at 0% after some weeks of using PW, so I had to open the mixer and raise up the volume sliders each time I opened one of these apps. Also I wanted to use an 'transparent' (invisible and non intrusive) equalizer, as my notebook's speakers are terrible and there's need for global adjustment. This can be easily done using PulseAudi Equalizer but on PipeWire it's impossible, because Easyeffects neither is invisible not easy - and it wasn't even reliable. And there where many more little issues like these. Obviously this all depends on the usage case very much.

The one thing I can't stand about Windows 11 is where the start menu is located. The amount of times I move the mouse to the corner of the screen and then realise that it's in the middle. If each Windows OS starts to go downhill I'll definitely move to Linux, I've tried Mint in the past and can't find a problem with it. Even if I still have to use Windows for some software that isn't on Linux, I would create a dual boot machine so I could switch between the two if necessary.

Your point of view about choosing an OS is reasonable. I have a very different experience and I dare say privileged one. I was exposed to computers during the infancy of UNIX and learned to use tools that scientists used and was writing code in FORTRAN and C. I used Emacs as my daily editor, not vi or vim even and can use a shell, bash, on a terminal on Ubuntu today. I could be a Linux fanboy and kid people about using Windows and have had Windows systems at home, although I generally install Cygwin and use gnu programs such as Emacs on Windows. I generally install Linux over Windows if I get an old system and use wine if I still want to use Windows apps.

Sorry, people. I really tried Linux Mint for over 1,5 year. But a computer is just a tool to me. I want to work with it, not for it. What would really be a good thing to do for the Linux community? Actively get rid of all the old tutrials that are no longer relevant. Put them in an archive somewhere. And make it a way of living to state the software version in the title! Actively address each other when someone forgets this. Don't discourage potential new users by forcing them to spend hours looking for something that is made for the software versions they want to start working with. Which is most probably the newest release.

If you have computers that can run Windows 10, I know how to get Windows 11 on there and without requiring an online account. But it's very involved and has to be done in an exact way to work. There was no Windows 12, yet. I know you meant 10 though. Back in my day it was Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, to Windows 98, to Windows 98 Second Edition, to Windows ME (And started building my own computer at that point, special for Windows M.E.) then went to XP Pro. Windows 7 was just Windows Vista with a different name. Otherwise, identical. Neither one of them had updates that worked until random times. But most of the time, updates were available, but either wouldn't download, or would error out. I know because I often reformatted and reinstalled my Mother's Operating System, because she liked to go online and download Bejeweled from shady sites. I got her a cheap new computer that had Windows 8 and she couldn't get used to the Charms bar either. So she put up with 8.1, finally until Windows 10. I am now on Windows 11, and a Windows 10 that "Doesn't meet any of the TPM, CPU, RAM, nor Secure Boot requirements" which I bypass and have Windows 11 working, with a local account. As for Linux... That doesn't work for me. I don't like using a command line to make things work and wine doesn't work to make my video editors work or my journaling software. But I am glad Linux works for you. I wish I could, just because I hate Microsoft because they've totally ruined Windows with what is called "insh*tification" and the privacy nightmare, which is mitigable, but impossible for people that don't know how to get into the guts of the computer itself AND into the guts of the operating system, would never be able to stop. Love your hair too. Mine is almost that long.

I'm switching to Linux Mint and maybe LMDE6. Audio is a major issue Linux needs to fix. Windows 10 has been acting up as well as you described. Windows is going the wrong direction so Linux is my new OS. Not going Apple.
