    I used hula hoops and added a pool noodle on top to give it cushion for the tulle I used. Since the tulle does not reach to the other side, I had to clip it together. I just ordered insect netting to replace the tulle because of the wear and tear from clipping and unclipping it.

    Great job putting in that sweat equity! A tip on raspberries if you’ve never grown them before-they’re absolutely feral so you’ll want a way to contain them to stop them from taking over that whole corner. I typically plant them against a driveway or sidewalk and then mow the other side to keep them manageable.

    I’ll never participate in a random plant swap. You are potentially inviting plants that have grubs or other pests attached to the roots or harmful soil nematodes, etc. Or, something inconspicuously attached to the foliage. I grow from seed and my own soil to minimize cost and avoid bringing in outside diseases/pests.

    • @reynaandtheworld
      @reynaandtheworld Před 2 měsíci

      Fair enough, that’s certainly a risk any time you bring in outside materials, whether it’s compost or leaf litter or mulch, or plants. Growing everything yourself is one way to do it . . . But I like the idea of sharing and building community

    • @itslowtide4690
      @itslowtide4690 Před 2 měsíci

      @@reynaandtheworld Right, there’s always a risk. That’s why I used the descriptor “random” plant swap. For me, I don’t know the skill/knowledge others have so I will engage in purchases through the county extension departments and commercial products, where there are some levels of control. Building community is a beautiful thing - I share my plants freely, I just don’t bring randoms in.

    • @reynaandtheworld

      Good question, this was probably not the best side by side comparison because I am sure that the ones I started last fall were in whatever potting mix I had lefter over at the end of the season possibly reused from other potted plants the tray I started inside under grow lights I used the Back to the Roots potting mix I got at Target.I bought it because it was relatively inexpensive and peat free but it compacted down and dried out quickly. I wouldn't recommend getting that if you have better options.

    I tried soil blocking for the first time last year, with mixed success. The plants where I got it right were fantastic; the others not so much. I certainly learned a lot! A friend of mine uses old 1020 nursery trays lined with a layer or cardboard to make them flat. I had some old cafeteria trays/fast food trays which were a really great size and super sturdy. It's easier to have them in smaller trays. Whatever you do, don't leave them out in the rain! My friend mixed a handful of Garden Tone into enough Pro Mix to make blocks for 2-3 trays. The Pro Mix is the kind that is mostly peat; not the yellow or pink blocks at big-box stores, but the kind you buy at nurseries. I'm going to try a batch with sifted coco coir and and handful of earthworm castings. Last year I decided the batches with a little earthworm castings were much easier to work with, just a little stickier. Lots of people used sifted Happy Frog but mine had too many wood products I think, just crumbly and too dense at the same time. It's also expensive. The hardest part for me was keeping the blocks adequately watered. It was just too hot for them. This spring I think they'll do fine, even though I am late starting them. One thing is that you can transplant soil blocks into the garden earlier than regular pots. The plants just seem more robust and the root structure is good.

      Awesome tips! I did look into the fox farms soil and it was quite expensive and I couldn’t buy it at a local store which was rough for me because I’m trying to avoid shopping on Amazon. I will check at nurseries too because I love the idea of adding work casting that seems like a smart was to give a nutrition boost without a heavy commercial fertilizer. Also I love the idea of using old lunch trays! So fun and creative. I will try checking my local but nothing and thrift stores to see if I can find any of those someone is getting rid of.

      Yes, the plastic usage is astounding! I would say reuse as much as you can before buying brand new even “sustainable” items because everything we buy has a cost to the earth when it is extracted and produced. So the more we reuse and keep stuff out of landfill (in combination with buying less to begin with) the greater impact we can have. Keep up the good fight! Good for you and this video. Just came from my master garden meeting and we are always talking about this. You may have to go to your master garden extension in your area for native plants and of course there are many on-line. Thanks for doing your part.

      That’s a great idea, I’ve wanted to get involved in my local master gardener group. I know that OSU extensión hosts them in my area in Ohio but I have had the time yet to get to a meeting or class. Hoping I can get to some of their events this spring and summer

    The soup looks delicious! Love the bird decoration on the barn. It must be such fun to observe the birds feeding from the window feeder.

      Thanks! The soup was a a hit and we’re really enjoying getting into bird watching. It is so fun learning about how nature exists right outside our window!
