4 reasons to get a Jacques Herbin glass dip pen...and 4 reasons not to
The J. Herbin round glass dip pen is a popular choice among fountain pen enthusiasts for sampling and swatching new inks. But these classic glass dip pens have a long history, and they are super fun to use. However, they aren't perfect. A glass pen comes with both advantages and disadvantages as compared to conventional steel-nib dip pens. Regardless, I enjoy my J. Herbin round glass dip pen as a nice change of pace from my day-to-day writing with fountain pens.

    I prefer a dip pen fitted with a large, fine-pointed steel nib that comes with a built-in metal piece on the underside of the nib. To further increase the usable ink capacity, I have clipped a compatible metal piece onto the top of the nib. Together, these two reservoirs on the nib greatly increase its ink capacity while still being easily rinsed out with water without being removed. That is what I use for ink swatching and for writing when I don’t want to fill a fountain pen. I don’t recall the brand of the nib with its optional over-feed, but the nib holder is my favorite, a Tachikawa T-40. It’s made of wood with a rubbery grip, it’s not expensive, it’s comfortable and non-slippery to hold, and it comes with a translucent plastic cap to protect the nib. I do take care to let the nib fully air dry before capping. I don’t want it to rust. I agree that glass pens usually produce a line that is too thick and wet. Worse, you can usually only write a sentence or less before the ink supply is exhausted. As you also said, glass nibs are often not smooth writers, and polishing the tip with an abrasive surface is problematic given its fragility and relative softness. It is virtually inevitable that a glass pen in use will eventually break. Overall, glass dip pens are very appealing esthetically but IMO they are impractical. Re filling: I have an Ink Miser that I have glued to a small Plexiglas rectangle for added stability. Its conical shape is ideal for filling large-nibbed fountain pens and would also accommodate a glass pen like yours. When a bottle of ink is too narrow-mouthed or the ink level gets too low for easy direct refilling, I use an ink syringe or a pipette to temporarily transfer ink from the bottle to the mounted Ink Miser, fill the pen, and then transfer the rest of the ink back to the bottle. Note that Ink Misers come in two types, the ones with holes high up on the sides that are supposed to be left in ink bottles like Noodler’s, and the ones that are a bit larger without holes. I used the latter for my plexiglas-mounted pen filling aid. Getting one that is translucent instead of opaque is helpful.

    I got mine yesterday after trying the classic charcoal black at the store... It just does not feel the same and I am quite disappointed 🥲 the grip section is almost sharp, not smooth as it is for the other safaris.. and I agree that the silver print is not going to last. also, the plastic feels terribly cheap to me! I don't know, I honestly think it is a big flop from Lamy, compared to the others safari.. I am even hoping mine is not legit, but I checked multiple times every detail, and it also writes smoothly.. but having that cheap plastic in my hands, feeling a sharp grip, twisting the barrel everytime with the hope that it will not crack.. I don't know.. it is aesthetically pleasant, but in the hands it feels like a cheap pen. I will go to the store today to double check again if mine is legit because I really can't accept that 😩 anyone else feels the same?

    Back in the day, the wax seal did have a purpose. The first product J. Herbin made in 1670 (yes, 1670!) was sealing wax. They also made ink and other stationery for French royalty and others in the aristocracy. If you have to cap a bottle with a cork that can be removed by hand (think no machining threads in 1670) then putting the wax on it would keep it securely stoppered before you got it home to your Louis XIV writing desk. Putting the wax on it now harkens back to the company’s history.

    All depends on use case ... I'm an enormous fan of Apica notebooks -- nice paper, very enjoyable to write on ... and also use Field Notes for tiny notebooks that I carry in my pocket (with a pocket pen) for ephemeral notes; paper's not as nice, but I'm optimising for portability.

    I think the Schaeffer Skrip bottle was the best ink bottle ever made. I don't care so much how they look as I do how easy they are to use, and how well you can use every bit of ink in the bottle. They came in two sizes. The smaller one doesn't work well with some pens with big nibs, but the large one does.I transfer ink I use all the time to Skrip bottles I get on eBay. Yes, they're nothing much to look at but they are the most functional bottle ever made.

    You can also put the empty cap for 2-3 minutes in hot water and let it dry and cool down. This shrinks the elastomeric cap lining back to its original dimensions. Do not put the pen back while it is still warm. It should cool down while it is empty. By hot I mean around 70-80 degrees C. Do not boil the cap. It is my personal method. I do not take any responsibility about the consequences.

    I have a glass nib made by a local (Seattle area) glass maker and I love it, but also chipped the tip within about a month of having it (accident prone). I can still use it I just have to make sure it's facing the right direction! I've been eyeballing those J. Herbin ones though as a replacement! I had a glass pen from the Large Retailer, broke it, was sad, got a J. Herbin one and struggled with it being too big for sample vials, picked up a Komamono Lab glass pen body that can be capped, and then got very curious and got a Sailor Hocoro fude nib pen with a shimmering ink and a Pilot Iro-Utsushi metal-nib dip pen. Those are fun but the Komamono Lab pen is still the one I reach for most often. I am still ogling a Kakimori nib with hunger.

  • @franciscogarcia7117

    I was gifted one several years ago, but I got too heavy-handed with it one time and chipped the tip ever so slightly. I've taken micro mesh to it and have fixed it some, but it's not perfect. Last year I got me an acrylic dip pen nib, but it doesn't work or feel the same as a glass dip pen. I may end up getting one these J. Herbin ones someday. Great video!

      @DowntheBreatherHole Před 2 dny

      Thanks for watching! I haven't heard of acrylic dip pens, but it makes sense that that's a thing. I could see how it wouldn't have the same feel or cool factor as glass though. And acrylic, from my understanding, is fairly breakable as well, though not to the extent that glass is I'm sure.

  • @eleanorjlh
    @eleanorjlh Před 7 dny

    I have a no-brand pen that's identical to this which I purchased cheaply from Amazon; I suspect J Herbin are just repackaging and rebranding OEM glass pens. Given how easy it is to break a glass dip pen by accident I don't think I'd buy an expensive branded one! I have the same issue as you with the flare of the "nib" section blocking the mouth of the sample vial; I have found the best way to ink up the pen is to dip it as far as it'll go, then tilt the vial until the tip of the pen is in the ink, then rotate the pen to let capillary action draw up ink evenly around it. Another point in favour of glass dip pens -- the reverse end makes a really good tool for swatching ink! Dip the reverse end in the ink and lay down a nicely-shaped swab of ink to see how it pools and shades, then write the ink brand and name with the nib end -- it's a great all-in-one tool.

    I got a Kaweco Sport F a few months ago and it was very, very dry and also had flow issues. Adjusting de nib I got it to write a bit wetter, but I have been unable to completely solve the flow problem. When cleaning it I noticed that the feed had very little ink: probably the problem is that it only takes the ink directly from the cartridge to the nib and it is unable to store any additional ink in it as it should. Therefore any change in the direct flow from the cartridge is immediately noticed when writing on paper. Also the feed looked irregular in the top (cartridge) area with the channel a bit blocked. I fixed it with a razor, which did not completely solve the problem. But there is still more. The cartridge is not held securely in place (not even the Kaweco branded cartridges), so I had to add a spring inside the body to avoid the risk of it getting loose: another known issue of these pens, if you look for it. I really love the format and design of the Sport and its compactness, but so many flaws and cheap materials for that price (32€ pen with horrible clip) are unacceptable. IMO It is way overpriced.

    • @DowntheBreatherHole
      @DowntheBreatherHole Před 8 dny

      Yeah, I feel the same way. A while ago, a friend of mine told me about the loose cartridge thing, and ever since then it has been driving me crazy. Some cartridges fit snugly, but most don't. I love the design of the Kaweco Sport, but the execution and quality control just aren't there, in my opinion.

    Moleskine is an English word for a French notebook, made by an Italian company. Mole skin would be the English way, mole eh skeen the French choice and the Italians would say mole eh skeen eh. I used them for years until I found others. The covers fray and the spines split. Years later they have fallen apart. They blew a whole market segment that they invented . Great video.

    I really like the P.W. Akkerman DutchMasters Series bottles. They have a marble in the neck of the bottle. Which allows ink from the lower resvoir to enter into the smaller upper resvoir. When the bottle is turned upside down. Thus filling the upper resvoir with an ink. 0nce you tip the bottle upside right again. The marble settles into its place in the neck of the upper resvoir in the bottle. Keeping in reserve what’s in the lower resvoir contained until needed.

    The Lamy, Iroshizuku, and Platinum are the three best bottles on the market.

    Tamoe River Paper. And seems like the new process is even better against fountain pen bleeding. Like it holds up to ink swatching and it's Bible-paper thin.

    I think moleskine makes the best sketchbooks (i own 4), but the classic notebook’s paper looks really cheap. Also the notebooks are more pricey than other years. I’m not happy paying over 23€ for a B6.

    Good lord I've been hunting for this kind of notebooks review/comparison for ages. Luckily I found this video, absolute Godsend, thanks man.

    I appreciate the tip on checking out different websites to get a better idea of the color of an ink. Oftentimes, I see a color that I love on a video and then I'll look at it on a retail website or two and it might look totally different!

      Yep! Even if I worked really hard to make it look perfect on my screen, your screen could be completely different.

      The Lamy Safari. I'm just super used to it. I have nicer pens, but I just keep coming back to the Safari.
