Why are you putting two cannulas in the rubber septum? The Erlenmayer flask (which is actually not suitable for vacuum) has already been evacuated, so its a vacuum inside the flask. If you now attach a balloon filled with argon, the argon fills the entire wrong one (VACCUM!). There is no need for flushing.

Sodium acetate can be purified further by dissolving in Dry methanol, non saturated solution, hot filter out the solid impurities, boil down, then chill the alcohol in the freezer and filter out the pure crystals. Methanol vapours are hazardous if in a non vented room, So if you are more advanced in skill Simply ensure good ventilation or done out side, being an alcohol it is flammable. I use it to make Glacial Acetic acid, and Acetic Anhydride via Sulphur Bromide method

You distilled toluene, you didn`t make it. Maybe just change the discription. I usually wash it to get out most of the more water soluble, fractionate it, then remove water with a Dean Stark trap. Do a nitro reduction with sodium dithionite whit ratios. Don`t think it`s been done other then by Chemplayer in a series of micro scale reduction trails where dithionite came out as clearly best with a 30 min reflux and no steam distillation of end product, only vacuum filtration. I think he could have done a better work up, but it wasn`t really the meaning of the video. Simple distillation and drying with CaCl2 would probably have done much.

Ah, so in this extraction you just have to get the water boiling, not exactly the cinnamaldehyde itself to boil? I was looking at the boiling point of cinnamaldehyde and was like oh man that is HIGH! But I guess from this video, the water can trap the small amount of cinnamaldehyde vapor above the liquid and carry it over?

Obtaining those raman filters is a pain an therefore I wonder whether you could just attach a self-built linear ccd-based spectrometer and cover the spectrsl line where the laser wavelength is projected on the ccd with a delicate line of really black paint (black 3.0). Can't you get around the need for an unaffordable notch or edge filter this way?

Have you considered using vacuum to lower boiling temperatures?
