You have to wonder what toll this takes on the horse's body.

These two seem to fill the whole stadium with excitement and joy! Also, at 2:54, I'm convinced that chestnut was planning on clearing the whole darn pool!! It fills me with ecstasy to see such a confident horse loving his work so much <3

There's actually this really crazy thing about horse's eyes: their pupils rotate to stay parallel to the ground. One of those things you pick up in studying them for 20+ years and drawing them for 15. The horizontal pupils allow them a wider field of vision to scan for predators while eating and moving around. However, it makes seeing things approaching from the front a little difficult. Not impossible, but difficult, which is why jumping is such an incredible sport. The horse trusts the rider to give the right signals and timing, and the rider trusts the horse to provide the correct amount of lift. Now, when a horse wants to get a better look at something approaching them directly in front (such as a fence) they lift their heads to guage distance/height of the object and speed of the approach. A trained jumper will look for the top rail. Watch well-matched and trained rider/horse pairs, and you'll see it. Their head will pop up for a second (with the nose pointing almost perfectly to the top of the jump), and then drop to get the power needed to clear. It's one of the reasons the rails are painted the way they are. If you were to put a brown rail up, the horse wouldn't be able to see it, and would wind up going through the fence. Yes, there are some horses that are fighting the rider, but those horses have multiple indicators other than a raised head. A poor rider is one who refuses to allow the horse to lift their head if they need to, and is a danger to the horse and themselves. If the horse cannot see, they cannot guage and are less likely to clear the jump, leading to accidents and injury.

and here we are again, a horse suffering all the time, desperatly trying to have more space for his neck and head before jumping, put under high pressure only for rider's ego. Equestrian competitions are a terrible world, no matter so-called riders hate to hear that, of course rodeo is the worst, just followed by horse races, but all those competitions are stupid and cruel. Just learn to LOOK at what happens, you'll see the suffering. Close up pictures of jumping horses show perfectly their head and mouth, and they speak loud......

Holy Crap! That is bigger, harder, better than any Olymic jumping course! That really is hard core jumping. Loved watching this clip with such extraordinary talent, both horse and rider! Yes, not many people can afford the money or the time to get to such a high level, but it still needs natural talent to start with, to get this good!!! Just a pity about the poor quality of the filming itself.

Call this hardcore, have you seen the Hickstead Derby? Check out Nick Skelton on Apollo 1990 - a rare clear round, although it’s more fun to watch Ryan’s Son in 1986 - 18 years old, he was still bucking and kicking like a colt. Of course there are more modern rounds to watch.
