If you are looking for continuity in a common theme you have come to the wrong place. I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to put on this channel. And I think I like it that way.
Some thoughts from a retired teacher
#teacher #scienceteacher #retiredteacher
It seems that the definition of teacher has changed in the last decade or so. These thoughts were going through my mind this morning out on the road so I thought I'd find a place to park the Jeep, set up the tripod, and blabber. Maybe I need more input. How is content being taught now??

#jeep #ridealong #horsetail #RayCounty #gravelroads I thought that I would go for a ride in Ray County this morning but got sidetracked with science just as I turned onto the gravel road. I think I'll come back and watch this during the winter when I will appreciate it more. This will be about a 25 minute ride after dealing with the horsetail. I don't expect *anybody* to watch this all the way ...

#dachshund This finishes up the dogs. I have a feeling that most of the views that this (and Dixie's) video will get will be mine. Even after 10 years this was still tough to revisit but I'm glad it's now here.

#dachshund 15 years of life boiled down to 9 minutes. Between devices, flash drives, and cloud storage I have dog pictures everywhere. This morning I took the time to gather up all of the better pictures that I took throughout Dixie's life and compiled them here. This video is really mostly for my benefit. Now I can take a trip down memory lane anytime. Albeit a sad trip.

What is the expected role of a teacher? Maybe we only need to look as far as our local bank. How many tellers do you see today vs ten years ago? Twenty years ago? A touchy subject to cover. Could use a deeper dive into our society as a whole. A thirty second sound bite carries more weight than a document on the same subject.
I can't answer what the expected role of a teacher is today. I've been out over a decade. Someone still in education can answer that best. I only know what the role(s) used to be.
I agree!!! My kids don’t have the knowledge of basic things. I remember having books and learning from those, along with my teachers guidance. My kids don’t know how to use a book for anything. Also they don’t know half of what we were taught in school.
To me, the book was the key. As a student I would take notes during class on the CONTENT. Trying to write down everything I saw on the blackboard as well as what was coming out of the teacher’s mouth. The next part was the most important. Take it all (including book) home and then rewrite my notes as I incorporate book information with it. By doing this I would *never* have to “cram” for a test. The work was put in every day. I still have my college notes of 45 years ago on my shelves.
You handled the bloopers with style and finesse.
Yeah, you shoulda seen the "style and finesse" of me coming down off that bluff. Ass over tea kettle about the last 10 feet.
Love the bloopers 👍
A whooooole lot more than I did. Of course, I blame the cameraman ...
If there was an effort to move soil and rock to protect a very small stream, would that be called BROOK SHIELDS?
Ah hell. Zee-row talent behind the camera and now you’re a comedian.
Topographics, shales, limestones...ohhhhhhh Rexella that's a LOT of science.
Oh we haven’t even got close to the topographicals yet. That excitement will be in part 2.
You know I'm more of a thrill seeker than you and I wouldn't even do that. But I think you looked like a raccoon washing his fish
That's some funny stuff, right there.
I would like to see you do that. Please!!!!!!!!!
I'm still waiting. Don't keep your adoring fans waiting.
Ok, I’ll get that right up in quick order. Make sure you stay up so you won’t miss it. Don’t go to bed. Just keep waiting.
Physical prowess, indeed - the subterfuge of Dickey Labs is heinous. Trickery, deceipt and outright insolense.
When one thinks of Cameraman Kevin, one's thoughts immediately go to just how strong and flexible he is, despite an occasional cramp.
Oh yeah. Unless he’s coming up out of a creek bed…
He was, indeed, a Good 'ol Jack.
Good 'ol Dixie.
Yep.
Sitting there under an umbrella of grape vines and aphids, cackling like a couple of fish wives.
I think the real highlight was the Native Plant Enclosure and Recreation Center. Additionally, I don’t think fish have wives. Unless it’s carp.
Safety FIRST! Those NPERC beasts, bugs, and whiplash grapevines can be quite treacherous.
You saw the goggles. And oh that whiplash grapevine.
@@DickeyLabs It is COMMON knowledge in the tinfoil hat spaces, that whiplash grapevine was created in secret underground labs outside of Mena, Arkansas and that the Clinton Crime Company is forcing Americans to plant the vines. Scandalous, I tell you. /sarcasm
Nothing worse than a dichotomous key with a missing Order-to-Family section. Scandalous, simply scandalous.
I KNOW! You would think that with over 3500 pages they coulda added a few more to make it complete!
Everyone loves Lab Day. As for Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus, he was Roman Emperor from 173-238. He rose through the military ranks and was proclaimed Emperor by the Roman army upon the murder of Emperor Severus Alexander. Maximinus's claim to fame is that he is widely considered the TALLEST Roman Emperor.
Wasn’t Severus Alexander in Harry Potter???
Another quite valuable "weed"
You are sooooooooo right.
I was waiting for some beast to come leaping out of there.
Like a possum?
@@DickeyLabs Either a sasquatch or a chupacabra. Both villainous and love native plants to hide their presence until it's too late.
Wow watching the video I assumed the channel would have hundreds of thousands of subs, the quality is crazy good bravo!
@@quartqwertbudisgood oh you are waaaay too kind! All I see in those videos are my mistakes. I just started making videos about five months ago. Gives me something to do. I have more subs now than I ever thought I would. Thank you for watching!
Hey, thanks for clarifying all that! You rock!
You bet. And rocks in that area is on the burner for the next video. Thanks for watching!
What's a "brook"
Sorry for not spending more time on that. I did kind of gloss over it. A brook is smaller than a creek. Brooks flow into creeks. And rills flow into brooks. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
whats a Chattahoochee?
A river in SW Georgia
@@DickeyLabs no its hotter than a.. nvm. love this video. can you do one on profiling stream, river, creek, and brook bank soil? I always see weird rust colored ooze coming from rocks into my local creek and i always wonder if there are some sort of iron minerals in them. Keep filmin!
You’re on the right track thinking about iron bearing minerals. Heck, I’ve seen buildings built of sandstone that has pyrite inclusions. And where the pyrite is exposed there is a rust streak beneath it.
So a stream is the action of water flowing in a given area is this correct?
Yes Malcolm, and going downhill. I like that word "action" that you used.
Thank you SO much! I have always wondered exactly how these are defined.
You know, there's still a number of names used that I didn't mention. Seems like naming these bodies of water becomes a regional thing. Different names for the same thing.
What about a rivulet?
A rivulet is a word that seems to mean anything smaller than a river. Put the ending "let" on the end and it just means smaller. There's also creeklet, brooklet (which is called a rill), and yes, streamlet. So if a rivulet is just a small river why not call it a creek? At what point does the rivulet become the river? There are way too many terms that describe the same thing. And in my mind it leads to confusion. There needs to be some structure out there with the naming!
Poor Kevin
No truer words have ever been spoken.
You have got to be kidding me! This goldbrick just sat back and enjoyed the benefits of a Dickey Labs outing. Here's the *least* he could have done on this trip : 1.) bought me some donuts for the Great energy I would be expelling on this outing. 2.) provided an umbrella so my top-shelf hat would stay dry. 3.) bring his bait shop styrofoam cooler full of cream soda and grape pop. 4.) cut me a check for $12.50 because.....well, just because. "Poor Kevin" my a$$.
Well done! I'd give it a 12 out of 10. The cameraman wasn't too bad either. Plenty of headspace, rule of thirds. Well crafted and knowledgable speech, thorough knowledge of terms and differences between different bodies of water. Lot of effort and time and it certainly paid off. Thanks for the contrib.
Thanks for the kind words. (I'll be sure to get that check in tomorrow's mail...)
Clearly the videographer in this video is the REAL star.
as he's mumbling' stumblin' and cussin' up that creek bank.
AND, as "videographer" I noticed that fly buzzing around at about 37-38 seconds in. Now, your *real* cameraman would have stopped and reshot the scene. And you know me, I wouldn't have said a thing about the redo.
@@DickeyLabs Short muddy bank vs videogeezer
When are you going to weed eat that mess? And yes, i said weed
See, you savages out there can't recognize the delicate, subtle beauty and value of the Native Plant Enclosure and Recreation Center.
Let see........ those plants are delicate? The ones that weed killer has a time killing. And another thing I would like to ask is...... most people want aphids gone off their delicate flowers to keep them alive, but not you???? And do you also think opossums are delicate?
@@PatG-h1o yes, yes, and most definitely yes.
@@DickeyLabs?????????
@@PatG-h1o Yes?? You have a question? See, typically you ask the question first THEN put the question mark. Or, in your case, 52 question marks. This might be a good time to upgrade from that flip-phone. I think you have a stuck key.
Pretty brave sticking your nose into a jungle like that!
Oh that wasn't me. That was possum cam.
It took 23 minutes before I truly recognized any part of that drive. Before that, I kept saying, “now I know where he’s at.” Followed by, “Oops, wait…no.”
Well for as long as it’s been I’m impressed you remember any of it. Not to mention spending more than 23 minutes watching this!
Please tell, is there a pubescence on the stem of asclepias tuberose? I planted a seed-grown asclepias kurasavica in the garden. His flowers are very similar, but there is no pubescence on the stem.
Yes. In part 3 of this little series you can really see it under the microscope. Thanks for the question!
You popped out that magnifying glass with sone authority!
Oh we don't play here in The Lab. Serious bid-ness.
Looks great!
Thanks Howard!
Ah yes, the old hand lens in the pocket-never leave home without one! That said as I collect fossils for classes this is something I have noticed as well. Definitely taking some liberties in “color enhancing” the specimens. Without a lens of some type many can be tricky to notice for sure. Nice catch there at Dickey Labs!
See? I knew Eric would understand about these matters. I’ve also noticed the color enhancement - especially on quartz specimens. It makes me wonder if I can truly find natural smoky quartz.
You remind me of snoopy as the red baron
We here at The Lab take safety very seriously. I don’t tie my shoes without safety goggles on. You know, that shoelace whiplash and all…
I saw that look!!!!!
I know that you are referring to that smug satisfaction when I deployed the magnifying lens.
No the one at the end I know you
I contacted the Missouri Botanical Garden Press inquiring about that missing dichotomous key between the order and family level. I asked if it had been subsequently published. They did respond quickly: "Unfortunately a supplementary publication was never completed."
What are you wearing on your face!
*sigh* It's the Lab safety goggles.... you know, so that whiplash grapevine doesn't take out an eye.
I believe it was way back in part 1 you were identifying different vegatation along the roadside. You pointed out Chicory. Further south than MO (like Louisiana) they add chicory to their coffee for an interesting (question mark) flavor. Nice series.
I thought I read long ago that chicory did not contain any caffeine. And by mixing it in with coffee it cut down on the caffeine per cup. I also bet it would stretch out the coffee supply a bit longer by doing that. There is one place I can go to get the definitive answers though..... Steyermark. It's your fault if an upcoming video, which I'm sure will have heavy Steyermark referencing, is titled "The Chicory".
@@DickeyLabs I thought a "tea" video would be upcoming, complete with the microscopic images of the varieties AND tea bags. Gruesome, I tell you. Gruesome.
Chigger flower!
I guess I need to check and see if anything is itching.
The title should have been book day 😞😒
ooooooooo..... you've given me an idea!
Well...that was indeed "lab day."
Oh yeah, we here at The Lab don't skimp on our resources.
Now I realize that this video will have people bailing out within 5 seconds. And the reason? BOOKS. Well, books and an attention span of 7 seconds. I’ve come to the belief that most people do not read books anymore. Primarily physical copies. I really hope I’m wrong about that. I recall the first time that I was introduced to one of the Steyermark volumes. I was in the Rare Book Room of the University library. These books had to be used only within the room and could not be checked out. Needless to say while I was searching that book for a Botany assignment I had, I fell in love with that big book. And you know, if I could have dormed in the Rare Book Room I would have. It was a room that felt like home to me.
That persimmon tree - remember that apple you handed me forty some years ago? I do.
Oh that CERTAINLY wouldn't have been me handing you that green "apple".... definitely someone else.
At 1:44 - That was a hint!?!
I just wanted to narrow it down a little from the possibilities you already had in your head. I know how big of a genus man you are.
How did I miss this installment?! And, to think, I’ve always thought it was clover. That might be why I can’t rid my back lawn of them.
An easy way to tell the difference is the wood sorrel leaflets are heart-shaped while the clover leaflets are more rounded. I planned on including that in the next NPERC installment. Whenever that happens.
Cousin Scott from Minnesota is the best part of this video.
I believe it was his sudden shock of seeing the wiiiiide variety of native plants over there in the Native Plant Enclosure and Recreation Center that realllllly came across. Now, you weren’t here to see the genuine excitement displayed when he cast his glance over there. Such a determined face he had with a torrential need to learn alllllll the botanicals. I thought I was going to cry seeing his desire to fully embrace the Native Plant Enclosure and Recreation Center. I really did. Then I realized he didn’t buy a ticket…
Honey don’t 😂😂😂😂
Now you would have thought that this whole thing was carefully scripted. It did have that Hollywood feel which I’m sure was immediately recognized. But nope, everything was just flowing through the mind and out the orifice. Not saying which orifice.
But, “Honey don’t” would get you in the area.
😂😂
Yep, more brilliant things coming out of The Lab. Just brilliant.
They are family. So lucky we are able to spend the time we can with them. You gave them amazing lives.
Thank you. You are right about them being family. My earlier self would have never dreamed of having an inside dog. Let alone sleeping with me!
