Running a recce of new trails #322
This week I'm doing s full 'dry-run' of a route I'll be leading in a few weeks time. There are some new to me trails I wanted to scope out before arriving with a group of ADV bikes, and boy, am I glad did did this.
The scenery was stunning as always and the North Yorkshire Moors looked amazing with the heather out in full bloom now.
I hope you enjoy - Paul - Biking Buddies

In this weeks upload we are out of the busy period of June (for me) and into the start of a fully loaded bike packed adventure month. What better way to kick that off than rolling back the working weeks with a post work evening ride to bring everything back into balance and perspective. For me, trail riding is a healing tonic for mental well-being and a good state of mind. Often, I find myself ...
June TRF Trail-ride #315
zhlédnutí 378Před 2 měsíci
In this weeks video I am humbled to lead another TRF monthly social ride across the Yorkshire Dales. I decided to push myself by taking in some of the slightly more challenging trails (to me) and also embrace my nemesis - water crossings! So as the intro says, grab a brew, grab a beer and come with us to see how we got on.... Music is licence free by CZcams creator studio
Less is more #314

When you're riding, we can often focus on big days and long trips, which are great in themselves. But what do you do when you only have a few hours spare and have an itch to scratch? Well, sometimes the answer can be 'Less is more' as I found on my last ride, only taking in one of the more gentle trails in our area. That said, it did everything I needed it to do and more. It re-set the mind, pl...

In this weeks video I'm taking you on a collage detailing the types of terrain that the Anlas Capra X deals with on my Yamaha Tenere 700. As a larger ADV bike, the bike must perform on two basic realms; on road and off road - I've found that the Anlas Capra X is the perfect tyre for such conditions, and whilst tyre choice is very subjective, for me and the terrain I ride over, I think you'll be...

Awesome stuff Paul, some very tricky lanes there... especially for on a big bike, well done getting through it all 🙂 I think I'd have struggled on my Beta with some of that! 😀 I am yet to do any night time trail riding, I think my local lanes would mostly be fine for it, but I'd want to improve the lighting on any bike I tried it on!
Thanks Buddy - I absolutely loved Eryri but have to admit, I was hooped at the end of day 1, let alone day 2 😳 Must get fitter, must get better
@@BikingBuddies is good to have the drive to improve. Both my dirty bikes are out of action currently, not sure when the Aprilia will be sorted, I should pull my finger out and sort the Beta.
I was up there yesterday on my gs loved it but it was windy
Yes it can be exposed, but as you say, it's an amazing place. Thanks for watching 👀 🙂
Another greatly watchable video, those Fords looked a little dodgy but you made it through OK. I would never in a million years find some of the trails you went on in this episode, it looked like you were just going through the middle of a field on some of them.
Thanks Mick, it certainly felt like I was going through the middle of a field to be fair. It's brilliant to find new trails and ride them on your own
@@BikingBuddies I must admit I prefer to ride alone, ride at your own pace, stop when you want, no one saying "that's the old fart we had to wait for" and no one to see you drop it😅
Yet another superb video ... Now, watching you on your Tenere 700 has helped inspire me, just traded in the Africa Twin , for a Brand new Tenere 700 World raid, and, if you don't mind, I have a question for you .. I'm 5'10, and the raid sits a tad tall ( I'm on tiptoes ) l, have you lowered yours at all, if so, how much, and any adverse effects ? Cheers in advance ... Tegzzy .
The world raid is a good chunk heavier than the standard t7. I've ridden both and for trail riding lighter is better. Both lovely bikes though.
As Kyle says, the WR is a heavier bike for sure. To answer your question, no mines not lowered as I'm 6ft 1" but I know a lady who has one and its lowered. Not sure what it'd be like off road on lumps abd bumps though as there is quite a bit of suspension travel to consider. Either way, I'm sure you'll love the torque and smooth power delivery - welcome to the T7 brigade 😎
What an adventure nice video, my son dose something like that too with the TRF enjoy my best wishes to you from the Philippines ❤️💪👍😉😀😁🏁🛺🏍️🐑🇵🇭🏴
Oh how fantastic and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment - thats very much appreciated. I'd imagine our terrain is so much different here in the UK than you're too
Well done on that 'rocky' climb Paul! Looked tough!
Thanks buddy. You'd have shot up there on the big GS - mind you, I could feel I was getting tired too, but thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Definitely going back
Great video! Encouraged me to join TRF
That's that's great to hear. I hope your local groups as active as mine is, there always som3thing going on no matter what time of year
Lovely video. Thanks for taking the time to create this 👍. See you next year
Thanks for being such a great host and providing such superb facilities, we'll definitely be back next year 😀
Hi would it possible to post route, just subscribed great videos
Thanks Gavin. I'm afraid I don't share the routes on open forums. There's normally enough detail to pick out where I am. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙂
@@BikingBuddiesok thanks just thought I would ask
Hi Paul last year the wife and I did Simon and Lisa's photography course from the Moto junkies site I saw a few bike's about the place then and was probably jealous. There are some beautiful spots waterfall's and landscapes for photography. Great vid mate
Thank you so much. I'd never really been to Wales before, so for me, this was like a kid in a sweet shop - it was amazing, and unlike you, I know we only scratched the surface
I would love to join you on my GS one day (I'm a TRF member), do you put on rides via the North Yorks TRF group?
Welcome on board Arif - I do post the rides on North Yorkshire TRF fb page. It'd be great fir you to join us one day - always big bike friendly routes too
@@BikingBuddies Amazing, will add NY to my additional groups section and sign up on FB. Thanks bud 👍🏾
Awesome stuff Paul, some very tricky and steep climbs there mate! 😀
Thanks Pete. Defo some tricky stuff and a lack of talent on my part too. Thoroughly enjoyed it all the same
@@BikingBuddies we get talent from doing the tricky stuff... and shushhh... you are far better at this malarki than I am mate! 😀
What an epic days riding Paul. You did well there on the T7.
Thanks Andy - I just need to get more confidence in my own ability - half the battle takes place in my head 🙄 Day two coming out next Friday
That’s true of all of us Paul. The T7 is way better than most of us and I’ve found that 2nd gear and a go for it attitude gets you over most things. Within reason of course! Looking forward to the day 2 video. 👍
I was sympathetic with the esiting too, as a lot of time, i was stopped half way up a hill, then had no choice that to start in 1st - that was the issue on the first hill i struggled on. The 2nd one was simply lack of commitment. I got too focussed on the rock steps, backed off (in 2nd) and lost the momentum - roockie error@andyclark4428
Yorkshire! "Not a patch on Wales" Hush your mouth!😆
🤣🤣 perhaps I was caught up in the moment 😳 It was a stunning place to ride and of course, greatly aided by the weather too. I'm glad you watched it
I've got a GasGas EC300 Enduro just wondering if it would be ok for this type of ride, or do you quite long road sections?
The bike would be more than fine - I tend to include small road section on the video's but as always, they are an inevitable part of UK trail-riding. Being in the TRF, I ride with folk on 2strokes, 250's to higher cc'd bikes - all are suitable for country roads - perhaps not motorways for sure, but roads in the Yorkshire Dales and Moors aren't an issue. Many thanks for watching and commenting too - very much appreciated
Love and hate that rutty trail across the moors lol only dropped the bike a few times over there 🙄😂 excellent trails and and great video 🙏🏻😁 see you soon 👌🏾
Thanks Lee, it's definitely not a big bike trail in the wet for sure. I think the bike would just sink! Thanks for watching and yes, see you soon mate 👍
Wow! that was a super long video, I'd have been knackered less than halfway through that one. The campsite looks great and able to keep the bike close by is good.
Thanks Mick, yep, I was goosed by the end and of course, I only filmed bits of the day too
Great video Paul, a lot of those trails are well beyond my skill set, maybe next year 👍
Thanks Gillian. The camera always distorts things, in the main, you'd be fine - gaffy ankles and all 😆
I was thinking that i fucked up the camera with high temps when i went riding yesterday, it was 36/38 celsius. Thank you for the information!
NP, glad you found it useful 👍
Looked like a lovely day for it, and a good group 🙂 Glad you are finally getting some better weather mate.
Thanks Pete. Yes, summer has been long overdue here
Excellent mate, i just missed you at NY 500 as you were setting off home, glad you all had a fantastic ride out 👌
Cheers buddy, it was a fantastic day's riding. Shame we missed you though, I'm sure there'll be other times
Another great video Paul showing how trail riding should be done Respect mate
More like fumbling my way around like a lumox 😆
Hi Great video thank you, is there a LINCOLNSHIRE group
I belive there is. The best thing would be to go onto the main TRF website and drop them an email. They were very helpful when I was looking at joining
Great video with a very relevant topic thanks.
Thanks buddy
I just got a Tenere 700 a couple days ago. I'm going to watch all your videos now to get inspiration about what I could do on my bike.
Oh, fantastic. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. I'm no Poll Tarres mind, just a normal bloke doing normal stuff on the bike - a bit like most of us to be fair. Thanks for the comments, and I hope you enjoy the bike 🏍 😀
Hi I'm new to the channel and subscribing 😊 Loving the content very much indeed please tell I recently watched the coffee and castles route fantastic history where could I get that route? I would love to try it Thanks Darren 😊
Hello Darren, if you're not a member of the TRF, I'd highly recommend joining. Not only do you get access to the green roads (map) but also lead rides, support, advice and lasting friendships too. Many thanks for watching and for the kind words 😊
Brilliant video as usual.
Thanks buddy - appreciated 😀
Split link on an 1190 ?
If it gets you out the crap to a safe place then I would
@@cliff1551 After the chain has broken yes, but there was a suggestion here that it already had a split link, which is not recommended on a bike with that kind of power because they break.
To be fair, I'm not too sure what was on before as it's not my bike. The footage is hugely edited for obvious reasons as we were roadside for some time. The reference to split link was an emergency repair to get the ride mobile and potentially home, but sadly we could find his and the others were from smaller bikes. Thanks for the comments though, always appreciated 😎
@@nockianlifter661 yes as I meant ,Google the forum coz a load of KTM riders put the split link on the back of the chain ,coz it lasts longer
@@nockianlifter661 plus then it's in the hands of the chain manufacturers who guarantee the split link else they wouldn't sell them yet
Another nice video and no water crossings😆 A good day had by all (except one).
KTM - keeps taking money 💰 😆 Thanks Mick, yes a very good day and lots of forest fun too. I always think when I'm there that I should get over there more. I love riding through the forests and I've got lots a new to me yrails to try and find too - lots to go at
What phone case you got mate
You know what - I'm not actually sure. It's an old one I've had fir ages on the mountain bike. After the very wet charity ride, I struggled to see the screen, the phone got wet and the case was just rubbish. No idea why I didn't think before to take the case off the MTB and use that, but man - it's a game changer
I can recommend ultimate add ons.
I love framington edge such a great descent, im learning lots of trail names from your videos 👌
😆😆 I just hope I've got the names to them correct . I do like the Dale's, some great views and challenging (for me) rides too. I'm pleased you're liking the videos too, they're not fire and brimstone, just regular stuff but it's nice to know they're appreciated. 😀
@@BikingBuddies i love them mate, i ride a himalayan and love steady riding to take in the views and landscape, for me that is what trail riding is all about.
Beautiful lanes amazing scenery 😀
Thanks buddy. It certainly is a lovely area and thanks for leaving a comment 😀
I am looking at doing this, but it does seem a bit other crowded. hope I get my moneys worth.
I enjoyed both level 1 and 2. I'm back this year to do level 3 I'm not sure what you mean by over crowded? I think we were like 6 bikes on the Leven 2
Complete contrast to the weather yesterday and today,im over in Scarborough, great video
Isn't it just. 15 degrees different from weekend to weekend 😳 Thanks for watching
I’m lucky enough to ride these roads myself so completely get where you’re coming from. Like the litter bag idea and will pick up on your tip and do the same myself 👍
Fantastic. We live and ride in a great area - litter is avoidable and irritating 😑 It's good to know someone else is going to do their bit too
Im feeling your pain. I crossed Rudland Rigg on Saturday riding Solo on my T7. Couldnt see a thing through my driving glasses. But....Such fun!
Thanks buddy - it was difficult enough without glasses, let alone with. As most know, I tend to ride with impact glasses on anyway, but when it's raining, I do leave them off. Thanks for the comments - very much appreciated 👍
Class video this, That rain is what Terry Pratchet calls "lazy rain" it can't be bothered to bounce so just goes straight through to your skin... The weekend looks really cool too, what a difference in temperature from this weekend though eh...
😆😆 never heard of lazy rain before, but yes, that's absolutely what it 😅 This weekends like 15 degrees warmer - it's mad weather we have at the minute
24:52 Are you still happy with the Anles Capra X tyres mate .
Yes. For a 50/50 tyre they cope very well. The only thing to better muddy ruts etc would be for the bike to shed circa 60kgs and be on full on nobbies 😆 Of course, my limited skill set also comes into play and I can't dispel that - would I get another set of Anlas CX - yeah, I think I would
@@BikingBuddies I'm going to fit a set to my husqvarna 701 now then and see how I get on ,wish me luck 😅
@cliff1551 the H 701's about 40kgs lighter than the T7 I think - that said, longevity against cost, against grip (on and off rd) it all stacks up for me. I hope you're pleased with them on the H 701
Hey mate husqvarna 701 s have 140x70x18 on the rear ,anlas only do 150x80x18 ,do you think this would matter
Thats a toughone. I kind of think it would, as the bike is probably quite sensitive to tyre size more than trpe
@@BikingBuddies what's trpe stand for
I really need to get out on some trails again soon... been too distracted by road riding 😀 I have had a few evenings out on the new bike, good for the brain after a 12hr shift.
Cheers buddy. Easy to see why you've been distracted by the goad bikes 🏍 😆😆
Great to see your respect for other road/track users and of course trhe livestock. Too many clowns on You Tube seem to thinks the lanes are are a Racetrack. Respect it or lose it.
You're latter statement is so true - respect it is loose it. We're all out there to either enjoy it or make a living from the land
excellent video that takes you on the right path Question: What size is the pressure washer?
Oh, there's a question. I'm not sure. I have a box of assorted compression washers so just picked one from there. They always come in handy, so perhaps just get a box of them. Thanks for watching 👀 🙂
Another great video Paul. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks buddy, I really appreciate your comments 😀
Great video Paul, I know all those trails and how hard some of them are, you’re starting to make them look a lot easier than they are, I’ve come a cropper many times at scar house climb😂 and you breezed it. Deadman’s was TROd towards the end of my trail riding career, so it’s good to see it’s open again and being used. Keep up the great work, thank you.
Thanks Richard. Yes I can see how Deadmans could be TRO'D as its badly work with boulders at the like. Your comments on my riding are far too generous, if I were on a lesser bike, it'd show my skills for what they are 😆 I'm grateful the T7 carries me through
Top episode again Paul, it's lovely seeing the sun shine again hopefully finally I can put winter kit way🎉. Looks like a great route if we are leveling up with the North does that mean we can have some of your hills I'm so jealous take care look after yourself.👍
Thanks buddy. It certainly feels nice riding in summer kit, feeling a bit of movement and freedom. I appreciate the comments as always 😊👍
Hi Paul great video as always last time I did the goats section it was in a mess was a chore to get up it on the expedition was it recently graded Thanks Steven
Yes mate. It's been regarded top to bottom. The water sections are the same, and being totally chicken, I'm always scared of the water 💧 😳
I’m down myself a lot so I have to mind what I’m doing I’ve seen that one deep before many yrs ago and can’t see through it 👍
Another great video Paul, I enjoyed the watch. I've only ever gone from Middlesmoor over to the Reservoir, I must try it in the opposite direction next time, or I could just turn round and go back I suppose?😁
😆😆 yes, I guess just turn around, but it always feels better not doing that for some reason. Thanks for the comments and the watching too. Very much appreciated 👍
How do you get on these rides, I'm in north Lincolnshire,, Brigg, I ride a husqvarna 701 and need to get out on trails.
It's a TRF (Trail Riders Fellowship) ride out so if you want to be in the loop you might want to consider becoming a member.
As stated by Mick - its a TRF ride. If you're looking to get into legal trail riding, then joining the TRF is a brilliant thing to do
I can relate to the "big puddles" 4 fractured ribs dislocated shoulder and peeing blood for a week, after my trip over the handlebars 😐on Rutland rig May 23
Thanks buddy. Yes, the risk is real - often people say I'm pushy footing around, but with yourself included, I know of 3 riders that have come to grief from deeper than expected puddles. I'd rather back off, bumble through and fight another day
Any plans on doing another beginners guide to trail riding Paul?..
No mate, I'm not. If folk want to get involved, then like me, they should join the TRF It's a great way of getting involved and accessing oodles of support
