ChatGPT: chat.openai.com/
ChatGPT example prompts:
"I'm learning Japanese and need you to convert and add furigana in Japanese parenthesis, (), after any kanji in the text. Can you do this for me?"
"Rewrite the following text in X language so that it's easy to read for a 10-year-old."
"Explain the following grammar X in X language as simply as possible."
Have a play around, asking ChatGPT multiple times with slightly different prompts might also help.

    Something about the banks I'm curious. The decks you put in the bank are decks you've "processed" (watched while deleting or suspending for the new cards deck) correct? So you're only left with those suspended ones right? Assuming the decks in the banks have been ran through, how are you you able to have a bank with which to pull ex. sentences from? Once done, Do you re-import that deck so you have back the one's you deleted? Does my inquiry make sense here haha. Like if i "watched" through many decks deleting most unknowns(which could've been used as example i+3,4 sentences later on in the bank), how could there be a bank to use. Also lets say you do re-import the same deck. You'd then have duplicates from the suspended new cards study deck no? Sorry for the ramble, just wondering about this. Thanks a ton, you're a pillar in this community!

    Thanks to the internet, way more people know English. When (not if) you find a fluent non-native speaker and you ask them how they learned, 9/10 times they'll say they watched youtube or something. They didnt spend hours reading textbooks and practicing fake dialogues, they got massive amounts of input they enjoyed over a period of months or a couple years until they were fluent.

    Receptive bilingual is another word for someone who doesn't actually know a language. Me and my brother are bilinguals. I speak our second language quite well, I was lucky to leave the mother country 3 years later in my life, and had picked up a reading habit I kept up for many years. He's younger though: he left when he was 5, and didn't really get into reading at all. I am now bilingual proper, and though the mother tongue is getting weak, I can just brush it up with a few weeks of practice. He though, is more of a "receptive bilingual". He struggles to speak the language at all... But he also has very poor understanding. Sure, he understands the basics, and can deduce a bunch of words he doesn't actually know if he hears them in context, but that doesn't mean he's fluent, or "asymmetric". Understanding is always stronger than speaking, ALWAYS. Usually 5 or 10 times as strong. So having a basic understanding will result in poor speaking. Add shame and usually disinterest in the mother tongue, and of course "receptive bilinguals" don't speak. Very poor argument.

    What these anti-grammar zealots never point out is that the ability to learn from input alone varies hugely between people. It may work for him, but that doesn't mean it will work for you. The fact is that the most effective programmes in the world such as the FSI, who have been studying efficient language learning for decades, use a balanced mix of intensive input and intensive work to automate useful patterns.

      I'm 35 years old... Spanish is my native language and I never used an English monolingual dictionary in my life, not even a notebook to write words down to memorize them later... I learned by reading, doing homework at school (?, consuming media, trying to apply what I heard/learned during the day.... you know the "natural process", and one day I was able to talk in English without "translating" everything in my head. Technology can make your life easier if you know how to use it, that's a fact... but I see a lot of (generally young) YTbers/counselors (gurus?) whatever they're called, advising everyone on doing the "monolingual transition" like if it was THAT necessary and if you don't then "you're learning the wrong way!" and it will take a tall later on in your life. You will be fine using a bilingual dictionary in your native language (for example ES-JP in my case.).. if you don't know the meaning of 犬 in English and you're not a very advanced Japanese student yet, why would you use a Japanese monolingual dictionary and make your life more complicated? You'll find a wall of text in Japanese like: "A domesticated carnivorous mammal that typically has a long snout, an acute sense of smell, non-retractable claws, and a barking, howling, or whining voice"... It's a DOG. You already know what a dog is in your language, you just need to assimilate the meaning in Japanese. You can create a simple Anki card with a picture of a dog if you want, maybe a short sentence and that's it. A lot of people also "mine" hundreds of words a day just by "one clicking an add-on", that simple it is, which is cool but they're skipping the natural process of creating your own material... you know we used to highlight stuff, look up the meanings in the dictionary, make a little summary for later, speak the word loudly... everything manually! You can use technology nowadays and it's perfect! but if you're just tanking, bulking, mass mining... like a madman without taking a break to actually learn stuff... you'll be just memorizing and after a few weeks you'll forget everything which is why some people complaint of SRS methods. There's nothing wrong with using SRS or other software, there's nothing wrong with using a bilingual or monolingual dictionary... the problem is those people that just think that a piece of software will do everything for you or that if you can understand a monolingual dictionary you'll be mastering a language... then when you ask them "how are you doing?" they can't answer it (but they know 40k Japanese words). Instead make your own cards, modify them, highlight stuff, look up on a dictionary, google stuff... if you downloaded a deck, modify/format it to your liking. I guarantee you that by doing all those things you'll be creating links in your brain that will help you to remember/recall stuff.

    I don't think it's working properly. It's only adding them by frequency/other_metrics, not by the registered fields. You can literally spam Add_New_Cards till you reach 3000 kanji. I don't remember it being this way. Common sense would say add all the kanji from your deck, then add new ones if you desire. It doesn't do that.

    One of the reason Germany produced such an insanely high amount of philosophers and scientist, is the language. The German language can change your way of thinking on a level which other languages can't. Judging from the video, you may not be interested in profound literature, but trust me this will change if you start understanding concepts like Hegel's dialectics. Maybe this is a reason for you to start looking into Germany again in the future.

    • @et6729
      @et6729 Před 7 měsíci

      I used to think this was bunk but I am now a high level in German and I completely agree. In German you can concatenate nouns to create new concepts in a way you absolutely cannot in English. For example in English a philosophical concept like vorhandenheit in Heidegger get translated into really verbose and turgid terms like "present at handness" which sounds terrible to the English ear. In English also most philosophical terms are just borrowed wholesale from Latin wheras in German they are constructed from simpler German words.

    This is a great video on a subject I've been thinking about a lot. As a worker in a creative industry, I worry about the ethics of AI and how it will be used to replace industries. I think there is a way that AI could be used instead to enhance the industry instead of immediately put thousands of workers out of a job. For example, ChatGPT being used to replace graded readers and native conversations, etc. The information that ChatGPT has access to is limited to what has been written about the language. Thereby, it's only derivative from professionals discussing the language, and it is limited to spoken conversation that has been transcribed. It's missing the culture and the lived experience to give information that is grounded in a true understanding of the language. At the same time, it would undermine professional work that is being done in this industry from people who have lived the language. Because ChatGPT can produce this material much quicker. Some of the instances you referenced make perfect sense for AI. For example, I think ChatGPT really shines in procedural work. Ask it to take a paragraph from a native speaker and rephrase it using the 1000 most common words. As someone who makes content related to language study. How do you see AI enhancing your work, instead of replacing it?

    thanks for your efforts, but completely lost with these instructions. I'm trying to add BULK furigana to all cards from Nayr's Core 5000 revised deck. Can anyone point me to a step-by-step exact procedure for someone with zero coding experience?
