the beasts I fell among,
were gathered like a throng,
my friend of misery
sure loves company.

I have peered from the casements
fearing the grave-girdled ground,
and from rows of white urn-carven marble,
I looked for a sound.

nothing but a hallow'd memory of life.

Then a sadness settled o'er me,
and a tremor seemed to start,
color and splendor, disease and decaying,
shrieking and ringing and crawling insane,
mystic waves of ancient madness blended.

my eyes transformed into sea jellies,
which beget little mocking monsters,
evil wings in ether beating,
things unseen forever fleeting.
