When I saw those bezels, that almost make the screen look like an older iPad, I knew exactly which Macbook this was lol I obsessed over the 2012 Macbook knowing I would never own it. And I never did. (As I type on a Macbook Pro M3)

I've got a 2012 upgraded to Ventura with OCLP, and a 2011 Running Linux Mint Cinamon Virginia. Both run extremely well, and the Linux laptop runs so much faster it's become my go to machine. Both of these are i5's. If I see an i7 out there, I'm tempted to grab it as well.

I bought one in mint condition 3 days ago for 80 euros. It was really struggling running High Sierra with it's 4Gb RAM and it's 5400RPM Harddrive. After rushing home, the first thing i did is : - Add 16Gb of RAM instead of it's original 4Gb. - Add a 500Gb Samsung 860 Evo SSD. - Replace the thermal paste and install OSX Catalina. What can i say, everything is SEAMLESS, i really REALLY like the unibody design of 2011 / 2012 Macbook and it still feels modern even after 13 years. I'm writing with it, the keyboard is godlike on those models (yes shame on you butterfly keyboard, SHAME), very pleasant and definetly usable for EVERYDAY use. It's even QUIET. Something i didn't expect. I'll give it to my mother which have one hell of a sluggish (even if more modern) Asus PC with a low-end AMD APU.

Its very good that you mentioned the GPU issues, I got a dead 2011 15" lying around since 2018. Hopefully I'll get to try dosdude1's fix soon and see how it goes, such a good computer gone to waste.

If you have a working disc drive in these iMacs, putting Snow Leopard on it and using Front Row as a DVD player with the white/aluminum Apple Remote is the way to go!

I have a 17” early 2006 model that I have upgraded to a core 2 duo and flashed it to be the 5,1. I have it running Lion currently. They make pretty nice windows XP machines with Bootcamp as well. The fans are max speed because the hard drive was likely replaced, and they didn’t put the temp sensor back on the new drive.

upgrade the ram, SSD, then use the opencore installer to hack in a newer version of MacOS. i got an 8,1 iMac (2008) and its running Mojave and FIrefox ESR as the browser, and it is fine for productivity, web browser, slicing prints, running my laser engraver, email etc.

I own both a "glossy white" 20-inch G5 iMac and a "glossy white" 24-inch Intel iMac system. Keep the G5 iMac on OS X 10.4 Tiger and, the Intel iMac on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard both desktops have MS Office, Apple Works, iLife '09, iWorks '09, and support watching and recording digital TV channels over the air using my Elgato EyeTV 500 system. And yes, your statement was correct Snow Leopard was the best ever Apple computer operating system (prior to trying to make the operating system look like an iPhone OS or iPad OS (smile ... smile).

I have the g5 iMac (without iSight camera). it's pretty fun, however slower than my iMac g4 and emac with g4...

I have three of them on my farm, bought for $25 each, and after replacing them with SSD and installing Ubuntu, they work great. It has an excellent screen and good speakers and I need them to run one application that connects to the home server and I do everything on the server and these are just computers-terminals. The original keyboard is very nice and can be used even with work gloves, but the original mouse is a nightmare.

Try ubutnu 22.04 LTS I will guide you though setup via comments driver's are not auto installed during installation even when you tell it to you need to go to software updater after you installed ubuntu also you must do: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade && sudo snap refresh it might look like nothing is bej g typed in whilst putting in your root user password after pressing enter on sudo commands but its actually going in the root & user password r the same!

I use one of these for tasks when I'm traveling. I use a 2012 21.5" iMac for everything and it's a good computer, under older macOS versions and Windows 11. Apparently my iMac is slow with macOS Sonoma, even with an SSD and 16GB of RAM.

Another fantastic video! I do love my 2012 13" MBPs, I have three at the moment (one without an internal SATA cable rip). Few thoughts/questions. Macs Fan Control and OCLP breathe new life into them on the software side and 8GB RAM and an SSD on the hardware side. I usually run Monterey or Ventura as I've found Sonoma to have issues that make them not very useful. Have you ran into the bad RAM slot issue that's common on these? Often flexing the board will cause crashes. All three of mine have the issue so I'm limited to 8GB on each. Easy fix is only using one slot for ram. As far as the old HDDs, I find they're great backup drives for the computers I use more often. An iMac and a few 2.5" SATA USB enclosures make for a great Time Machine backup server over my local area network.

Intel nailed it with the Core chips for these kinds of applications. In many ways they perform similar to how they always did, adjusted for the extra inflation of software and websites etc. SSDs are an absolute must, my friend has this exact 2012 MBP, and it takes minutes to load single apps on Ventura purely because of that spinning drive.

just picked one up for under £50, popped an ssd in & it's working fine. nicer machine to use than the retina version, which I bought new, maxed out, in late 2012. useful selection of ports, & a dvd drive- what's not to like? the 16GB thing is a bonus- it wasn't supposed to be supported so that's good to know. helps with the shared vram I guess. I'm leaving mine on an older OS for legacy app support & performance, but I'd got some resolution tweaking app on the build, which allows me (apparently) to run the internal display at 1200 or higher, not just the 800 native. it's a bit gritty but it works, & wins you some extra real-estate for full-screen apps.

also have one with 16gb and an ssd... i would use it more, but the amount of heat this thing produces is a nono for me. if it weren't for that.. i'd could use it for mundane things for fun... but again, i personally wouldn't use it as a main machine. one big negative is that you cannot have this macbook on your device list and also enable 'advanced data protection' an any of your apple devices until you remove this mbp 2012 from your apple account. which again prevents it from being a main machine bc you cannot sync it with your other apple devices. mine is running the latest OS it's allowed to run natively. maybe if someone has hacked a more up-to-date os on it, it'll allow that security feature. it's too bad apple has become such an ani-consumer company. would be so nice if modern apple products were self-upgradable like in this one.

The uni-body polycarbonate MacBook is by far one of my favorite MacBook designs ever . I currently own a Mid 2010 unit with the 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo which btw I'm currently writing this on it using macOS 12 with Open Core. it's quite sluggish compared to my 2012 uni-body with Sonoma but it gets most simple things done.

I have two of these that I bought several years ago and upgraded both to a 1tb ssd as a main and then both have a second 1 tb drive for data in the media bay as well as 16gigs of ram. Both are amazing machines and I will state these are the best ever laptops ever made. The quality of the hardware is superb and I have both hooked up to 27 inch external monitors and are showing full HD - it is like having an iMac (along with external hard drive and mouse). I am blown away by how good these are for basic tasks including viewing videos in HD. I have Catalina running on both and there is no need to change. I have both laptops with lids closed and on a power supply as well.
