Razor MX650/MX500 Electric Dirt bike Upgrade Comparison
This video is to compare different performance characteristics between stock mx500/mx60 with the same bike with upgraded components. The cheap kit can be found on ebay and amazon. The last video shows the same spec motor, though it is from a company known for higher quality parts, but the performance difference between the cheap kit and the more expensive one is largely do to the much higher quality Kelly speed controller that has the ability to demand more amperage from the batteries to send to the motor. You can't really tell in the video, but the Kelly contoller provides much more power that is also infinately more smoothe and consistent to the ebay kit. You can modify the ebay controller to give better power output, but I have yet to do that on my build. My Kelly Controller and Kunray 2kw motor were purchased from Gerardo Salas (contact information below).

      Oh boy. Where do I even start? It was an amazing experience- but I got over my head with the notes and footage and got overwhelmed and abandoned the video (minding that this channel is a hobby and I have a full time job and several kids). I will say the trip went amazingly, and that mod was wonderful for highway driving with some caveats. I ended up with a forked version of the software that showed me a bit more data and enabled some features that were not available on the main branch, like being able to bring the car to a complete stop. Due to limitations with my car, not the mod, it really ended up only being useful on highway driving as the power steering servo lacked torque for tight turns and the system could only be enabled above 40mph without further, more complicated mods. There is some ability to increase the steering torque in some Hondas, but mine is unsupported. Again, these were limitations with my vehicle and others, like Toyotas, fair far better. I ended up returning the system due to me doing very little highway driving in my day to day but it left me being a believer. Sometimes, the mod could even see the road better that I could during heavy rain even in the dark. It was very impressive. Sorry for letting you down on the follow up video though.

    • @NerdsWithFriends
      @NerdsWithFriends Před rokem

      Not at all man. You can get 48v lead acid chargers, usually made for something like a golf kart. What I did when I had multiple lead acids to charge (I’m not saying best practice, it’s just what I did) is got a splitter and charged my 12v batteries in parallel. I used a 12v trickle charger with an adapter that had like 5 connectors on it that would charge each battery to 12v and then reconnect them in series. You could also use a 24v split to charge 2 banks of 24v batteries in parallel before reconnecting them in series. I apologize if this doesn’t make sense. It be much easier to draw out or show you. Are you on the Facebook group?

    • @NerdsWithFriends
      @NerdsWithFriends Před rokem

      So supposedly my batteries are each rated at 30 amps. 48v packs are 52 volts fully charged. My batteries are ran in parallel meaning I should be able to pull 60 amps. 60ax52v=3120 watts. That’s the math but I’m a novice so if there is more to it, I am unaware.

    • @NerdsWithFriends
      @NerdsWithFriends Před rokem

      @@AnewDaddy very cool! Yea, volts typically correspond to top speed while amps give you your torque figure. An Mx350 stock should do around 14mph (at 24v) so at 36v you’d expect the top speed to be 150% the normal speed which is pretty much right where you are. That’s awesome that you’re able to reach those speeds as a full grown man! Be careful with it in the grass though- I burnt up a couple 36v motors in mx350’s. If you do burn it up, there is a 500 watt version of that motor you can throw in there that handles the heat better but, ironically, it’s actually slower at about 17mph if memory serves me correctly. (I have the motor on my buggy now. I no longer have any 350’s) but the 500w motor is already rated at 36v.

      So the biggest problem with overvolting is heat. Light riders should not have any issues. They exceed on flat pavement. Once you start having heavier riders, hilly terrain, and especially riding in the grass you can start burning up motors. The stock throttle is fine.

      Be patient. Piece by piece is fine. Keep your eye out on offer up, Facebook marketplace and Craigslist. You’ll find a good deal on a used bike - I got one of mine free but it may take a while. Batteries are the most expensive part (if going lithium) so get on the forums to watch out for good deals on used packs. You can always use cheap SLA (lead acid) batteries as well while saving for batteries - but lithium performance is where it’s at. You can overvolt the stock controller and motor by 50% (so 48v) and it should be a problem- especially in NYC where I assume most of your riding will be on pavement.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I did not drill out any bigger holes on either build. The kunray has a heat sink I slapped on there that I had purchased for a stock motor but ended up killing the motor before I got the chance. I’m kind of hesitant to drill the holes bigger since we do so much off road riding but maybe I’m just being paranoid. Any performance improvements along with the heat?

      It’s called speedometer simple on iOS App Store. I actually don’t love the app. Tons of ads and kind of slow and skippy- but that may be a limitation to gps speedometer apps. It doesn’t do video overlay like you see in this video- that was done in video editing software. I matched the speedometer up with the video by doing a screen recording on my phone, clapping my hands, and syncing up the audio between all the clips.

Im gonna mod the entire power train and suspension so is the weight rating only because the mx650 has more power stock so it can support bigger riders or is it a structural thing?

    • @NerdsWithFriends
      @NerdsWithFriends Před 2 lety

      Sorry for the delay in video. Had a move come up 🤣 short answer- if you have a regular commute with many interstate miles- do it. Totally worth it. I ended up returning it because in the passport the steering is lacking the torque to use it anywhere other than on the interstate. The passport also can’t drive itself in stop and go traffic. These are issues specifically for the passport and other Hondas- but for my use case it just wasn’t worth it. I have more to say- hopefully I’ll find the time to make an update video.

    Thanks for uploading. Does the car automatically disengage from open pilot at a certain speed? Based on the car specs the stock Honda Passport driving assistance has a lower bound with regard to speed, think it’s 40mph or 25mph. Forget which one.

    • @NerdsWithFriends
      @NerdsWithFriends Před 2 lety

      My pleasure! I just upload for the fun of it. Stock the passport won’t do lane keep assist below 45mph and cruise control cuts off at 25mph. Lateral and longitudinal control have different limits. With openpilot, both active lane keep and cruise control work down to 25mph. The modified version of openpilot that I am using will bring the car to a stop unassisted behind a lead car. If the lead car slows to below 25 and the. Subsequently accelerates, openpilot will disengage and you must accelerate to above 25mph before reengaging. This limitation can be overcome with an extra hardware mod called comma pedal to allow for cruise to function in stop and go traffic, but It is not a mod I have used personally. But steering (from my understanding) will only operate above 12mph. I have a full explanation Coming up on the future when I find the time to finish the script. I’d check back in towards the end of the month to see if it’s posted.

      @@NerdsWithFriends very cool. Thanks for the detailed response. I’m on the fence for purchasing one, definitely interested in trying to improve some passport functionality if I do. Glad to hear that it stays engaged down to 25mph. The lower bound of 12mph on steering I believe is the torque limitation on the passport that I’ve been reading up on. Unsure if that can be improved but I’ll keep looking around.

    • @NerdsWithFriends
      @NerdsWithFriends Před 2 lety

      @@fredaswq some people have accomplished torque mods for their Honda vehicles to increase their turning ability. I’m not sure if that is the limiting factor for the slow speed turning or not. It also is a very involved mod and requires someone to reverse engineer the firmware for the steering motor and retune it to allow for more torque. As far as I’ve read no one has done that for the passports yet.
