I Only Had 50 sq ft To Build My Dream Machine Shop | Phil Engineering
Large machines and a small space are not really compatible. But if you have nothing else and still want industrial equipment you have to do it anyway. Let’s see if 5 sqm can fit 2.5 tons of machinery.

One of the most essential machines to have in a metal workshop is a Lathe, so of course I bought one. Right here I have a Colchester Master 2500 that was not used for 6 years, so here I am, giving it a second life. Intro/Outro Music: Epidemic Sound Crab Boys Pt. 2 - Auxjack, Jobii

Realy good work Phil, nice refurb, plus the fact you had a good machine in the begining,( diamond in the rough).

This is not a restoration, is just a cleanup! Restoration means measuring of flatness, parallelism and perpendicularity on every moving part in relation to head of the machine. Restoration means also, grinding and scraping on the surfaces that have wear or excessive wear over the years of use in order to achieve flatness, parallelism and perpendicularity. If you find a broken part - since it’s a restoration project - you have three options, a. trying to fix it (if this is possible), b. make a new one, c. searching to buy the original part from shops that selling surplus parts etc. Restoration also means, changing of every bearings the machine have' inspection of the apron leadscrew, the leadscrew of the cross and top slide - in case of excessive wear you'll need the change or make new leadscrew-s. The final step of a restoration is the paint job - usually the original color of the machine. Adding a DRO, a new chuck, or another QCTP are consider add-ons and we are doing this simply because we want to improve the accuracy and the quality of the parts we going to make with the restored machine. This just my humble opinion on how a lathe should be restored.

Are you going to see how true the ways are compared with each other? I saw how Keith Rucker have done it (I think you know him on CZcams). He is really good with scraping lathe ways.

Hi Phil, I’m really enjoying your channel. I’ve watched your previous two videos on your lathe overhaul and found them very useful because I’ve just purchased 4 days ago) a Cholchester Triumph 2000 which I believe is the same as yours with just a different name. The dealer I purchased it from has changed the gearbox oil but I’m not sure what he used so I will drain it and put the correct oil in it. Thanks for that piece of important info. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

Hi, no the triumph is actually the bigger brother, a really nice machine. Take a look inside the manual what they recommended and then ask what the modern version is. Pretty sure the triumph takes shell oil too.

Just as a shoutout to anyone installing a DRO. Or will I just sound like a grumpy old man picking on every small detail… 🙄🙈😅 If it’s anything like the ones I have (it sure looks so), the installation manual says to keep the transportation lock/adjustment shim (the black plastic piece in the background at 37:00) in place for the correct spacing between the head and scale, when tightening it. I’m not saying you did anything wrong here. It might just be out of the video. Just a small detail for anyone looking for inspiration in this awesome project and video. 👌 Impressive to say the least. Edit: And just because of me commenting about the spacer/liner you mentioning it less then two minutes later. 🤦‍♂️ I’m sorry for jumping the gun here. Ooh, and your brackets look 1000x better than mine. Really nice.

Hey man well done organizing your tiny machine shop. I know exactly what it's like, my shop also has an available floor space of 5 square metres which houses a medium sized 900mm x 300mm lathe, medium sized universal knee mill ( hafco HM54GV for those in Australia ) I also have a universal tool and cutter grinder a pedestal drill a jib crane, small pedestal grinder/linisher and tooling trolley for the mill plus other tool boxes oh and a bench with a vice all in that space, outside that room I have mig and tig welders and a medium sized band saw. If I have to set up the mill for horizontal cutting I have to take the grinder/linisher outside otherwise I am trapped in the room. I don't know what the humidity is like where you are but one tip I would give you especially having a 3D printer is everywhere you have metal and wood surfaces touching together put a plastic barrier between them or you will have a rust problem because wood draws moisture from the air and holds it. I have to keep everything covered in plastic here due to the humidity. Oh and magnetic pickup tools are great for cleaning up the chip mess. Happy cutting and look forward to your next video.
