BRAND NEW SLURRY STORE
Due to new regulations being brought in to control how farmers can store slurry, we have created a new slurry store so we are able to increase the space we have to get us through the winter. In this video you will see the whole process of the project and also learn why we had to do it and how we made the various decisions along the way.
Hope you enjoy.

Making SMALL BALES OF HAY with our NEW HOLLAND BAILER
zhlédnutí 26KPřed měsícem
We’ve all heard the saying, make hay while the sun shines, and in this video we are doing exactly that. We don’t always get a lot of opportunity anymore to get our small bailer out, but when we do it’s always a great moment. In this video we are showing you everything we do to make our small bales of hay. Hope you enjoy.
PREVENTING FLIES on our IN CALF DAIRY HEIFERS
zhlédnutí 3,5KPřed měsícem
During the summer, flies come out in their masses and can cause great annoyance and discomfort to our animals, and more than that, can cause illnesses and diseases. In this video we are showing you what we do to help protect our animals from the flies to help keep them happy and healthy. Hope you enjoy.
WORMING DAIRY HEIFERS using POUR ON WORMER
zhlédnutí 3,7KPřed měsícem
Routine worming is exceptionally important during the summer months when our animals are out on grass. If we didn’t do it, the stock would pick up worms from the grass and it would make them extremely poorly. In this video we are showing you how we do our group of young heifers across the road. Enjoy.
DAIRY FARMERS turn SHEEP FARMERS for a morning.

So in this video we will show you our amateur work at worming and moving our sheep on the farm. Hope you enjoy!

put some straw through the baler when you finished.......leaving hay in there rusts the bale chamber........straw doesn't rust cos it doesn't heat up like hay does

slurry is becoming a big problem on many larger scale dairy farms......a lot of time / money /machinery involved. i got a neighbour who built a slurry store next to a river back in the late 70's, needless to say they have now got the environment agency on there back so they talked of building a new earth bank store up on top the hill and then tankering it or pumping it up there from there farm which is beside the river but the Dartmoor National Park refused there planning aplication but the national park would allow them to build a new store on the existing site which is next to the river........but the environment agency won't allow that because it's less than 12 metres from the river........not much joined up thinking going on there between the national park and the environment agency

In Northern Ireland, that lagoon must have a liner installed and you will soon have to cover it to stop ammonia escaping. Surprised at the difference in regulations between different parts of the UK.

Ladys- I've calved 1000s of cows, all ages, different breeds, x breds, yields, all yr round or mainly autumn calving and I've never had a fresh cow of any age with staggers- yes a very odd one early spring, never on grass this time of the year. The mag sub cut is a bit of over kill. And talking of putting stuff in the vein, I take it you know not to put magnesium in the vein? Stops a cows heart. I learnt that the very hard way a long long time ago. Calcium ok if done slowly n better if warmed a little. Carry on fermin!

One the most vivid images that I remember from reading All Creatures Great and Small many years ago, was the "new" approach to treating milk fever in the 1930's. Harriot described it as though raising a cow down with hypocalcemia, "from the dead". Because there really was nothing a farmer could do to save them, before IV and subcutaneous calcium became widely available. The farmers saw the vet as a hero when the sick and dying cow miraculously recovered in a short time. It was an interesting time for veterinary treatments, because of the scientific breakthroughs becoming available to replace what were often just quack powders and "cures" that really did nothing but give a placebo effect for the farmer. So the could feel better for the money they paid a vet. Even in the late 1960's when I began working with horses, there were still a lot of those useless "drops" and magic cures being used that really did nothing at all. Now, just 8 decades from Herriot's first practice later, farmers have access to effective drugs and treatments they can use with confidence in their effects.
