Got this 94’ Artic Cat EXT 580 for $125!! Had some problems but first time working on a Artic cat, figured some things out and wow what a machine! Sorry I didn’t record me sanding the pipes and going through the carbs and whatnot. If you want to see me do those let me know and I can figure out how to include that into the videos. Hopefully y’all enjoyed and let me know what I can do differently!

Love that 96 xcr 440. it is an sp? easy way to check, if trailing arms go all the way back and even with the belly pan it is not an sp. sp had magura brake also. some had a magnesium chain case too
Sure is. It’s a race sled. Raced in the 90s in snowcross just trying to figure out what races. Also the driver lives in the same town as me and is willing to come take a look at it sometime
awesome! I never even looked at the 440s when they were new. I had a 97 xc 440 few years ago, wich is basically a 96 xcr sp they run hard for a 440 and can turn. Take a look at the chain case, the magnesium ones i have seen look a bit darker that the aluminum version.
@@scottsweeney9647 I had a 97’ xc 440 motor blew up so I got ride of the sled since I couldn’t afford to fix it. You can see I have a video of me looking at it

@@scottsweeney9647 probably a few hundred. Has carbs and clutch on it.

Let me know if you end up parting out the XLT

Unfortunately it sold yesterday 😂. Sorry about thag
A lot of useful stuff there. That's the kind of things we used to do back in the 80's with our shop. We would strip down the machines that couldn't be fixed and put the parts on shelves. The rest went off to scrap. On a different note: I recently investigated a coolant leak on my '88 Inviter. What I found was quite ...interesting. The video shows that it was worse than I thought. Sooooo, now I am on a search for parts. If I can't locate parts I might take the engine off and stick a fanner in there.
Parts are always nice. I rather see me keeps some parts and shoo the chassis away than just the entire sled get scrapped. And that sucks about the inviter but a fan motor would definitely wake that sled up a bit!
@@BraidenSlagle When you are in this business, it never hurts to have parts around. The sad truth is that sometimes a sled just can't be fixed. That's when you take everything useful off and scrap the rest. Hate seeing vintage machines go that way, but as they say, "ya can't save 'em all." Wish we could though. Yeah, I am afraid a couple of parts for that water pump are going to be unobtainium. I still have several months before snow flies (IF it flies this year) to try and locate them. Will just have to see what happens over the next few months.
@@NJP76 I know a weather guy and he’s been right about all the rain and etc this year so far. This winter is supposed to be bad… as in tons of snow
Dude you got a fkn junkyard in the middle of the city I'm sure your neighbors love you 😂😂😂
It’s not a junkyard. I’ve made triple than I’ve paid for for anything. And my family has raced dirt tracks for 30 years. I got people who say nice words and talk to me about them when they come by. Sorry your neighbors don’t like your sleds. I have many people who like them and don’t care to see them. Better have a hobby than drugs

What are those things covering the ski loops, and why are the on them. Just curious....
So, we didn’t have foam but we had to tape the ski loops so they could see if we jumped the line. We weren’t prepared like we should’ve been but it was still a blast

If it's not firing when you add gas to the cylinders, you are either missing spark or compression. Check those. Whatever you do, do not buy the harbor freight compression tester. They all read very low because the hose that you have to use is so long but doesn't have a check valve at the bottom so even if you have good compression it will read like 30 psi below. I can't believe they still make and sell them. Every time the reviews get too overwhelmed with bad reviews, they just change the part number and start over. Shady.
She wants to run. I have checked spark. Eventually I’ll bring it into the garage and get it figured out!
Did you check the pulse line from the fuel pump to the crankcase? Another highly overlooked issue is the pickup line in the tank is rotted off. Especially 90s era sleds that have been sitting for a few years with this garbage ethanol fuel we have these days. It's sad we have to pay $3 to 4 dollars or more a gallon for it. I don't know what state you live in but here in Maine we have 90 octain non ethanol recreational fuel at the pumps it's a must have when winter is over then storage time comes.
@@alexfarrar5389 I’ll definitely check that out! Much appreciated!
Unreal deal! I got a trail for $200 a few years ago and had to drive an hour to pick it up. I thought that was the deal of the century. It needed a top end too and had varnish in the gas tank. Mine has extra ten and studs though. I love that sled! The reason it melted a piston (before I bought it) was because a mouse made a house in the fan housing.
Dangggggg! Yeah this was heck of a deal. Especially the compression and everything it was well worth it
Did you think that the engine might be idling a bit fast? Waiting for an update on the race. Go man goooo.
Yeah she’s idling around 3k the throttle cables to short so there automatically engaged lol. She just has to make it through tomorrow. Hopefully have a video out this weekend of Friday night race… Hopefully I don’t get knocked out first round 😂
@@BraidenSlagle Getting there, getting registered and passing tech inspection is a win for a new to you machine on it's first time out.
@@ehguy3628 yes sir. I’m so excited for it!
Very impressive bro! That's a haul.
Thank you!
Nice work and attention to detail. Had you taken some gas on a few rags and cleaned up the oil tank and the area below the air box. Also pretty important, often the bearings in the skid that tension the track will seize up. This can end up tearing the track. Cheap and pretty easy to replace the bearings in these two wheels.
I have not, but that’s a good idea to do! I’ll have to do that before I bring it outside today. I appreciate that!
Dude you talked about cleaning more stuff in the engine bay for the last 5 minutes instead of actually doing it 😂
I talked about what to clean next for the next video? It was towards the end of the video
@@BraidenSlagle just do it instead lol
@@MidnightPolaris800 well I was just informing what would be coming up in next video. This weekend I’m pretty sure I’m going to start the sled so I was going to clean the last bit and put everything back together. Probably show a bit of the cleaning and than a time lapse of me putting everything back together cleaning carbs fuel tank fuel pump and etc. Probably leave the putting back everything together the video of me trying to start the sled
@BraidenSlagle I'm not sure why your doing all this when you said it's sold? It's not going to increase the value. Only thing I can think of is you agreed to do all this pointless painting before they pay for it? It's a $500 to $750 sled whether its painted under the hood or not. Why don't you go through the carbs, clutches and do bearings instead. A person that is going to buy that sled would 100% rather it be mechanically in good shape than cosmetics, especially at that price point
@@MidnightPolaris800 The guy is watching me go through the sled. It’s for his mother. I’m not in it for the money. I do it for the hobby. Yes some extra cash is nice but it’s my hobby I do it for the fun. I’m 90% sure I’m going to leave the clutch how it is. But I think I’m going to take a look just to make sure nothing is hidden. I’ve been working on the sled without recording and have looked through everything. Some things I’ve already mentioned to him that I won’t replace due to the price and whatnot. And he’s perfectly fine with it. As he wants to do it himself and learn. But he wanted to make sure the sled is 90% inches good running order. It’s just how I am. Plus I’m going to have to take a big leap from what I’ve been doing to the sled. I have to get the xc 700 in get it prepped for race day coming up. So more than likely I’m going to have to skip a few things
With my algorithm, I thought she was chocolate 😂
🤣🤣🤣
We got the exact same Northwood pontoon
Haha, that’s awesome!
Hey buddy... let that machine warm up proper. "Speed warming" doesn't help anything. I just ran a '98 and a '95 today (March 27th) and they both let me know when they were ready to go. Squeezed the throttle and they both launched like rockets. I get the luxury of running 10acres and did a couple miles in the ditch but I think I was finding dirt at about the same rate as you. Let's hope for a better season next year... this season was brutal for sled heads!
I know I should’ve let it warmed up more haha, just was excited to run. Plus the sled hasn’t ran in over 10ish years lol
@@BraidenSlagleAll the more reason to let her warmup normally my friend. When they haven't been run in a while, those gaskets and seals can be on the weaker side. One of my sleds has over 10,500 miles on it and the motor has never had any work done. Take good care of them and they'll take good care of you. I do like that Indy 400! I've never owned one but I've always wanted to zip around on one and see what they're like. I like vintage sleds so I still pilot things with 295s and 340s under the hoods. I do have an old 1973 TX 400, but it's not quite the same! lol
@@kennethgoin628 first time riding a 400. There a little peppy that’s for sure!

I've been a mechanic for over 40 years. Don't waste your time and money on those arctic cat 580's. There junk.. piston failures to the end of the world. Oh that 98 xc 700.. what a gem. That's a keeper forever. Did I say that xc 700... 😊 Polaris twins foever. Love that you run a old square body.
I love my xc 700. She will never be sold some out the other xc. I only got the cats because they came with deals I couldn’t refuse 🤣
How much snow did you get over there?
Over a foot
Could and Have listened to the sound of those Fuji engines for many many hours. Fun in the round. Add to that the sweet smell of 2 stroke in the morning.
Yessir, gotta love the small
Man, when that pipe came on, it REALLY came on! Seems like 7000-7500 is a sweet spot for that tuning. I did notice that it seemed kind of boggy in the low to mid throttle. It sounded like the airbox was off. That could make a difference in the bog. Otherwise I might consider jumping up a size on the low speed jets. It definitely can be a ripper once that bog is sorted out. I tell you what, I should have hooked my trailer up to the Avalanche and headed up your way. The Indy has been sitting on it since January...waiting for snow. Seeing you rip around the back yard made me want to ride. I guess I missed my chance to get one last rip in for the season.
She hasn’t been rode like that for years haha. She seem to clear up more and more after I drove her lol. But for a 400 she was a little ripper lol. Sled was only $80…. I couldn’t be more happier with it.
Definitely a short ride lol
If I do ride today it will definitely be a long video haha
I have a 94 Indy Lite/340. Purchased it in the Spring a few Springs ago. Likely did All the things that you have and will do with that machine. Nice era to work on as just a basic set of hand tools can get most things done. Those machines are fun and a guys got to learn to avoid the deep snow as the short track and short paddles mean if you can't float on the top then you best head back to the trail. Or dig. Enjoyed the video. Is that the shop heater that is coming on in the audio?
It’s my little kerosene heater to keep the garage warm…. I wish I could work without it on just to cold. Maybe someday if I can ever get some extra revenue out of doing this I can possibly install one until than it’s just how’s it going to be during the winter times… summer time will be quieter and such lol
@@BraidenSlagleI don't even have a heater or insulation in the garage at my house so your lucky lol
Lol, I am very lucky with what I have
A 43 min video of you cleaning an engine bay isnt going to gain many new subscribers if that is your intention. P.s. those clutches are f'd
It’s a part series. I can only do so much. That was a couple hours I shrunk down. Many hiccups along the way. Sometimes people like slow process and see what all gets done to a sled
@@BraidenSlagle I hear you. I'm curious how the internals of those clutches are going to look when you go through them

Maybe concentrate on having 2 nice running and driving sleds? Ones with no engines or needing everything replaced dont count as sleds man 😂
I have 6 that run. A few need work lol. Some part chassis are worth having. I rather buy a whole cheap parts sled than buy part here and there and end up paying more than just buying an entire chassis
@BraidenSlagle dude all you sleds need serious work except that 98 xc 700...there's a reason your getting what you pay for when they're 100 or 200$
@@MidnightPolaris800 the 88’ Indy 400 sks runs. The cutlass runs. Indy trail just needs a carb cleaned and she runs. 700 runs minty The 2 xcrs are the most work I have to put into. The ext just needs the carbs refixed and she runs. And the xc 400 ran when I bought it but unfortunately the motor blew. I have drove that sled before she blew. The Yamaha SX runs as well. Just don’t want it anymore. The 2 old Yamahas I got them because there chassis are a few hundred alone how they sit and refixed there almost $3k each lol. @@MidnightPolaris800 worked in the Indy trail I just got for $125…. Has over 145 each cylinder. She’ll be ready to fly after a drain of the tank and a carb clean
@@BraidenSlagle I also count project sleds as sleds, but the minute they're labeled as a parts sled, they're off the count and not part of "the collection."
I am a Polaris and Yamaha lover. My first sled ever was an old (even at that time!) 1971 Polaris. I forget which model it was, but it was big and heavy. It had a 297cc Sachs one lunger. Wasn't fast by any stretch of the imagination, but we could fit four people on it! The track was junk though, so we ended up putting that engine on a '72 Boa Ski. Much lighter sled, and a ton more fun. Over the years, I went through a couple other sleds. Scorpion, Rupp, and a Polaris Mustang. All long gone now. The best sled I had back in those days (early-mid 1980's) was a '74(?) Yamaha SL338. It had no engine on it, so we put a 433 engine on it and man that thing could rip! It finally blew the track in early 1989, and we never fixed it. :( Believe it or not, that was the lase snowmobile I had until a few years ago when I picked up this 1995 Indy440. Bought it for 400 as a non-runner. Had it going ten minutes after I got it home and absolutely fell in love with it. I actually have some videos about it on the channel. I had been wanting to get a one lunger just for bombing around the trailer park and some light trail riding. Really wanted a Yamaha Bravo, but the right deal came along on this 1988 Yamaha Inviter. Couldn't walk away from the deal, so brought it home. During the one week of winter we actually had, discovered just how much fun that little Inviter can be. Not fast, at only 300CC single, but the fun factor is off the chart. And yes, of course I had the Indy out for a few trail rides as well. Just didn't do much filming. Wanted to get as much riding in as I could. As for Arctic Cat? I have no issues with them at all, even though I have never owned one. Wouldn't turn down the right deal on one. SkiDoo? Hmmmm. I see a lot of them around, and some look really sharp, but I have never owned one, and don't see one in my future...although that could be subject to change under the right conditions. Anyways, sorry about the long comment. Just wanted to share a little of my history with snowmobiles.
