About visualization, it absolutely works. I've been plying since 2001, so I've got some years under my belt and I have experimented a lot with different things. --- I think visualization is being hugely underrated because it sounds like woo-woo. But I have seen this over and over again, if I don't visualize my level of playing goes down the drain and when I realize "oh damn, if forgot to visualize" and start doing it, immediately I start playing better. This I have seen especially with putting, there's a dramatic increase in success rate when I visualize VS not. --- This may sound woo-woo, but I have seen this also so many times that to ignore it, would be just stupid: When I visualize it seems that I have also better luck with throws, meaning the wind seems to help me and if I hit trees, they seem to also help the disc go under the basket. There is no way I can prove this scientifically, but in reality I have seen this so many times over the years that I can't ignore it anymore, it just works. --- First you have to know the technique, at least to some extend, but after that things like confidence, positive attitude, visualization are the things that separate great players from mediocre. --- Everyone struggles with putting so I want to give my pointers and routine which helps me a lot: 1. Make the calculations: What is the elevation to the basket? What is the wind direction and speed? How hard should I put and where should I aim considering the facts. So here you "calculate" the perfect throw. 2. Relax the body and mind. Take a few deep breaths and practise pumps and start to feel the putt. 3. Visualize the perfect putt, see in your mind how the disc flies straight from your hand into the chains and how it drops into the basked. Really try to see and FEEL this happening while you do the practise pumps. 4. Again, relax your body and try to feel relaxed and confident as you do the actual putt. Concentrate on the hit point being confident. --- If I do this checklist which takes some time and effort, VS just putting the difference is like 50% better which is insane. I'm literally like different person %-wise if I bother to do these steps.
Someone call Stokely
He's an absolute beast, especially for maintaining that arm speed for so many years
You got to see this?! So cool. Do they still have this competition? I haven't seen it covered for a long time.
We got to be apart of a team so we could get pit access and went from 2012-2014 ish. There was a lawsuit and other stuff happened so they no longer have the event the way it originally was in Delaware :/ luckily one has taken over in OK, but a lot of the original teams from the northeast have stopped competing
Would you recommend starting with this nose angle drill before working through the brace series or vice versa?
Great question! For a lot of my clients, I have them doing these arm and nose focused 1-legs and standstills before they go into the bracing drills for x-steps thereafter, so you could try that out
always have to one up Okie haha jk.. i finally hit 600ft on flat ground with just a xstep but then you have to one up me bcuz i had like 20mph tailwind and you do it no wind. come on!
either way congrats on breaking 600! Not many people have done that, even with decent wind
Do these throws feel as effortless as they look?
Thanks for the compliment! I’d say they feel similar to how they look, once I start feeling like I’m trying hard or forcing things, my results get worse
major major l
Awesome. Please upload a slomo version of this
I don’t have any high frame rate slow mo footage of this throw sadly :/
How much does strength play in being able to throw far?
I find that it can help quite a bit, but depends a lot on how someone has developed as an athlete and what their style of throwing/form relies on
@@NickKrush.DGandFit im 6ft 1 and 150lb so im not strong at all im skinnny now i used to be a big time athlete.. 205lb all muscle but that melted off me once i fully focused on form and yeah now i assume i can throw 700ft if i gain some muscles!
You using a speed gun?
I wish haha, I've been using photogrammetry which is a pain but hoping to get a speed gun soon
@@NickKrush.DGandFit only reason I ask is because only a couple of the top pros are throwing that fast, not trying to dis credit you just curious is all
@@zachwilson7061 no worries brother! I don't mind the curiosity about speed measurements whatsoever, and will be getting a radar before too long so I can improve the videos' production value
@NickKrush.DGandFit I'd look into techdisc, I plan on getting one myself, like 300$ and can measure everything angles, speed, rpm, will show you a projected flight and stuff too, and can throw into a net and it'll read all that
@@zachwilson7061 stay tuned, I'll be throwing a tech disc in the next couple of weeks and will have results posted soon thereafter
Teach me
I can :D I coach full time and my website "nickkrush (.com)" has everything you'd need to sign up!
The Ether is by far my favorite driver for max distance - the Realm and the new Aura from Gateway are also incredible 🚀
Let's start by saying: This is by far the best technique video I have EVER seen. --- I've been playing since 2001 so it's.. 23 years now. There were no technique videos back then, so I had to learn the hard way.. mistake by mistake until I got something right and then tried to duplicate whatever I did right. So I have gone through this kind of progressions myself, trying to understand and pick apart what the hell is going on when you throw the disc and what to do if I want to get better. It has been a long journey, but in this video, Nick shows exactly the same reasoning I have come to over the years. --- All I would add is to get a net and a speed meter because you can see what you did right immediately from the increased speed. What I learned from the net practise was that my grip was leaking power. When I gripped the disc harder than before, the speed increased immediately. That was my one of my weak points which the net practise revealed. So the net and speep meter helps a lot and you don't have to keep collecting discs from far away, so you get more throws in in a shorter time frame. --- The hard thing about this is, that there is so much going on SO FAST that no one can see it. It's hard to see even in slow motion. All you can do is FEEL the technique working and use that feeling to lock in the best technique when you keep doing the drills and when it "clicks". --- I also recommend using a towel a couple of times before each drive in a round. This helps lock in the technique and you perform better when it's not your first throw, meaning you have warmed up your muscles and nervous system with the towel. You know, the second throw is always better than the first, and with a couple of towel drills, the actual throw is like the second one and you will perform better.
Thank you for the nice comment! I'm pumped to hear the drill and explanation worked so well for you. I really like your approach with the net and radar gun - a great system for getting quantitative feedback to relate to how the throw felt.
Well it’s definitely not 500ft I’ll tell you that much 😂 I go much flippier! 230ft Mint Bullet 260ft Axiom Hex 300ft Axiom Insanity
Thanks for commenting :D 260ft hyzer with a midrange is deadly for accuracy I bet
I do alright with the tunnel shots. Just don’t expect much from me on wide open courses 😂
@@twofifty6 hahaha
Hi, Im 14 yo. And by the way, I max out at 500ft so stock hyzer at 500 is just mind blown. 270 ft Envy 325 ft Teebird 3 395-410 ft DD1 I use metric system so take the conversions with a grain of salt😅
Those are amazing numbers, especially for your age! Distances should keep increasing over time for you
Finally someone to give Wiggins a run for his 💸💸💸 💪💪💪💪
We'll see, he's pretty unmatched when it comes to power + angle control + consistently, but it would be a lot of fun to compete and see him throw!
So are you good at disc golf or do you just throw discs far
I haven't competed in a tourney yet, but usually shooting decent scores when I get to the course (950+ rated equivalent). Very much a work in progress though!
280 ft envy 350 ft vela 440 ft nuke
You have a cannon of an arm seabear, 440 hyzer is nuts
@@NickKrush.DGandFit 🫡 might be pushing the definition of hyzer a bit lol
@@SeaBear161 haha it's a must!
I was tempted to dislike this out of jealousy 😂 Hyzer eh? 245ft Zone 280ft Reaper 330ft Nuke
i know we all appreciate the candor! and 330 with the nuke is still amazing, that probably makes par 3's feel easy
@@NickKrush.DGandFit sure does compared to a couple months ago
It dose make since ive done this but not as a drill and ive noticed that my nose is more down with my standstill and goes just as far as my run up imma give this more time and do it as a drill to get it more natural for my xstep
Sweet, best of luck with it!!
I go 450 ft with the judge it’s all I need lol
😂 what else would anyone need at that point
500ft all hyzer is just dumb..
lolol, never know you might get there with how you've been progressing lately
5'3 wingspan here, 1.5 y/o experience, I think that's valuable, I can get 305 full hyzer, 370's full flip and turn
Those are some really solid numbers for anyone, but you are especially getting a lot out of your frame!
Well it's certainly not 320 with a putter!
@@IronGoober yeah its 290 with a putter
@@whyroader oops, I didn't mean to reply to your comment. I was saying my own throws aren't 320 with a putter, I didn't mean to say anything about yours! Sorry for the confusion.
@@IronGoober i was like damn I might bust something trying that but I'll try it with an envy
This one is going to take me weeks to break down and translate to my form, but the first step is already having me throw equal distance with no run up, slower reachback, which equals about 50 to 70% power versus old form. Out here doing the Lords work! Keep it up!
That's already great progress! I have no doubt you'll continue reaping gains and eventually work it into the full x-step
91 mph?! What in the world.
Best of luck to you in the distance comp! Looking forward to the collab with Blitz, too!

@@NickKrush.DGandFit sounds good
I love your focus on how coaching for everyone needs to be specific to them! Coaching in any sport is this way and I can never understand why so many disc golf ‘coaches’ take the approach of ‘there’s only one way’
Thanks Nick! Been incredible working with you. I can’t stress enough to everyone out there how important a great coach is, especially when you’re going through a slump. In Discgolf we all have a tendency to think we can do it alone
And thanks for the opportunity to coach you Matt! It’s been an absolute pleasure
I've been watching all your videos Matt and it's inspiring to see you make progress, especially at the rate you've improved so far!
@@NickCarroll thanks so much for watching the videos and thank you for the kind words!
Let's Goooo! New video Hype!!
Seems like simons leg stiffens a lot earlier than schustericks. Is it ideal to get that front leg straight earlier to promote pelvic rotation a little earlier or don’t worry about the leg straightening as much as just getting the foot down before you start the pull through? Love your stuff man
Great question, they both throw 550-600 from their x step so it really highlights the individual differences from person to person. The speed of leg and hip extension will be a product of physical abilities and how rapid someone’s acceleration patterns are.
episode 1 is awesome
thank you!
Thank you. I always wondered what would happen if a real athlete who understood biomechanics and how to train would dedicate themselves to throwing a disc.
And thank you for the support!
Nice PBs! I noticed it looks like you are still using DIP joint extension in your grip on the back fingers. How is that feeling now compared to DIP flexion from before you hurt your finger. Does one feel stronger or easier to manipulate the disc (like turning the key hard), or change in wobble? Surprisingly for me when I try DIP flexion I lose a few mph of speed. I haven't practiced it a lot, but form climbing my fingers are strong in both positions. But I feel like I get a firmer grip on the disc with DIP extension and as the force increase it feels like the grip locks in more (more DIP extension but it has no where left to go so it's just locked until friction finally slips). I thought maybe my body / mind wasn't trusting the DIP flexion enough and so was powering down, but I was able to produce what felt like my really high effort throws but still came up with less speed. I'm sure with practice I could get closer to my max speeds with DIP flexion and it seems good enough for many pros.
After a few weeks of the new grip joint angles, the grip strength caught up and has now surpassed my old grip, with the best part being that I'm not worsening the bone bruise on my middle finger from 360s anymore 👍 I haven't noticed a strong correlation in regard to wobble, but do think my nose angle benefited slightly from having more hand and wrist articulation freed up.
@@NickKrush.DGandFit team DIP extension! let’s gooo

amazing!
Hell yeah Nick, you're going to do great!
thank you brother!
360 run up is sketchy, feels like your going to face plant.
How tall are ya? An do you reckon it plays a big part in throwing far?🤔
6'2" without shoes, and my wingspan is also 6'2"
Awegolf here!!! You are a savage beast 🏆
Hey what's up Dan! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out
Do you think speed can be learned or do you just have to be born with it? Been stuck around 62mph and hoping to hit 75 one day.
It's a combination of nature and nurture, but the nature (genetics) component only defines the ceiling of what someone can reach, and even then, training can overcome lots of genetic shortcomings. I was throwing low 70's 8 months ago when I started playing again, so with proper training and form work, you can definitely pick up tons of speed.
@@NickKrush.DGandFit That's awesome. Thanks Man!

That's awesome to hear :D And yes, usually slight hyzer release for my distance lines
Do you think you would he able to compete in the pro distance comp? I think you'd have a good shot at winning
I’m planning on it :) flying up to WA in June to compete in a pro competition with BlitzDG
@@NickKrush.DGandFit I hope the one in june is streamed. I'll definitely be watching that. Also if you're ever in western NC, I'd really like to get a formwork session. I'm on the fence about the online coaching because I think I learn better in person. Just a thought
@@j45002 me too! and noted, I'll reach out to you if I'm ever in that area. Im not sure how close that is to Rock Hill but since I'll likely compete at the USDGC that could be the best shot
Bro 90mph?!?! Keep up the content creation its dope!
Will do my man!
Yes! Holy moly that is fast. Have you quantified the potential error bars on your measurement with the differences in launch (toward or away from the camera)? I imagine just a couple of pixels or just a bit of being closer or further away from the camera could change it by a few percent.
Absolutely, there are many things that can go wrong, on these throws I had to check different reference lengths because I was skeptical about the numbers (everything agreed luckily). The relative distance of reference length distance to camera and disc distance to camera can have a big impact, which is why I prefer a further shooting distance with a higher resolution. There are a few other things that can help with minimizing error contributions but, I really want a radar gun so I don't have to spend all that time getting it accurate haha
@@NickKrush.DGandFit FX Archery Chronograph is about $200. It will go down to 13mph (but you get a lot of spurious readings). It might work for you. I use if for slings, and it will pick up a tennis ball throw, so it should pick up a disc. It's the cheapest option I've found. Pocket Radar is probably better for you though. FX chronograph is best above 45 m/s (100mph). So maybe you just need to start throwing Starlite plastic! :)
@@IronGoober oh nice. That sounds affordable, I suppose the risk is whether it works well for discs or not but maybe there are some testing results somewhere on that!
@@NickKrush.DGandFit Let me go try it and I'll get back to you :)
@@NickKrush.DGandFit I just tried it and it works with forehand and backhand disc throws. The only issue is that you get a lot of spurious readings from nearby radio signals, and you have to be directly in line and close to the radar when you release. This particular one seems to be less sensitive than a previous version that I had (The release could be further away), but it does work.
Ofc we want it all! Film your breakfast as well ;P
Hahaha maybe one day I could do a diet video!
91!! 😮 crazy!
Boys got hops! Ball golf long drivers go through a test like jumping and dead lifting and they can tell if you can drive far. Good luck bro
