greeting once again. It's strange to see my previous comment from a year ago. Now I am in west Ajijic and just signed a lease today for a beautiful house in centro on Independencia. I'm giving myself 6 months to try out living lakeside and see if it's a good fit. I've only been here a week but it's proving to be an enlightening and fulfilling experience. Meeting a lot of expats; everyone has an interesting story. Namaste

Some times they shut the .water lines when they are making repairs not even in the US do I drink the water without a filter system, people come to Mexico and expect first world infrastructure In issmall second world towns there is a reason why you are able to live cheaper in Mexico than the US
Thank you. Ive watched a few “con” videos and thought they were wining about stupid things. Then i found your video which gave me useful information i hadnt thought of asking. The smoke and other airborne things, invasive dust, and filthy/unreliable water are not things i can or will tolerate since i have both asthma and allergies. I was going back and forth on the area and this is information made this area a solid NO for me. Thank you for saving me a lot of time and money checking further into this area.
I'm sorry this was discouraging, but it is the honest truth. I try not to whine, but I know many people who just go away during this hot, dry period. I have never lived any place that is idyllic 12 months of the year, but 10 months of the year is quite tolerable to me, especially if I can just go someplace else for 2 months. By the time the rains start in late June, we are quite appreciative of cooler temps and the lovely dampness that brings things back to life again. I'm glad this helped you decide.
That's too bad.Maybe you should move to another country instead of where you're at.It's a beautiful place to be
my concerns about the recent changes occurring in Chapala, my mother's hometown. While we appreciate the interest in our community, we feel strongly that the town's beauty and charm are inherent to its original character and culture. We respectfully request that newcomers to Chapala make an effort to understand and respect our way of life. The imposition of outside influences is not welcomed, and it is important to us that the integrity of our community is preserved. We hope you understand our perspective and cooperate in maintaining the traditions and lifestyle that make Chapala unique.
This is how it has always been and this is how it should remain now we hope you can find something better like in Europe with your people or in America?
Different place. 5 de Mayo is not Independence Day The rest is a matter of different cultures.
Perhaps you chose a place that was not acceptable to you. You might have made the wrong choice.
I love it here!!
Perhaps you chose a place that was not acceptable to you. You might have made the wrong choice.
Good informative for sure!
Did you move? If so, where did you move to?
No. I'm still here! I do not plan to move again!!
Nothing like a spoiled american complaining about every little inconvenience.....if you can not take the heat get out of the kitchen.
I’m single also and really feel the same as you-thoroughly enjoying this time in my life. I’m planning to move there in the next 18 months. Thanks for this helpful video! I’d love it if you’d make a video about how you’ve dealt with medical insurance. Did you keep Medicare-and Advantage or a Medigap plan? I understand it’s expensive to get private “expat”health insurance in your late 60s. I’m totally ready to make the big move except for this one issue. Thanks for considering making a video about this!
Thanks for watching! That is a great idea to cover the question about health insurance. I will put it on my list and try to get this done in the next month or two. I have a little backlog of ideas because it has been SO hot this month, I just can't get out and film, but this is a topic that doesn't require going anywhere!! Thank you.
Thank you for such honest and revealing insight into life there in the dry season. I was considering a move there but now I’m definitely giving it a second thought.
Yes. Good to do your research. Things are really changing here. I'm not sure if it is just because of El Nino or if it is a more permanent trend due to climate change. It is very uncomfortable and many people are concluding that they will just go someplace else for a couple of months while it is so hot. Only time will tell. I think most places are trending toward hotter and more extreme weather, so we just have to decide what works for us individually.
Thank you very much for the reality of the good, bad and ugly. Not many people do that and just give you all the fluff.
Thanks for watching. I get flack about being negative, but I really just try to paint a realistic picture of life here. Most of the time it is lovely, but this year really has us worried!
Too funny! Last year we stayed in a boutique hotel in Guadalajara, 2 different Air BnB's in Ajijic and Jocotopec and finally another hotel in Chapala. All the beds were definitely on the firm side, but I slept like a baby everywhere we stayed. Clearly my body prefers a firm mattress haha
Well, everybody likes different sleeping arrangements. Firm beds make my hips hurt!!

I'll be visiting the Lake Chapala area in the fall. I grew up in the Catholic church and have lived in New Jersey for the past 25 years. So none of the drawbacks you mention are a deal breaker for me. Having to worry about two houses is what they call a "First World problem." Maybe you should reassess whether Mexico is right for you. No disrespect, I enjoyed your video and wish you all the best.
I really have never considered moving back to the U.S.. Mexico is home now. 10 months of the year it is really lovely here. My videos are just a dose of reality for people researching moving here because, quite honestly, nobody else seems to talk about this stuff. I have no financial gain from glossing over what life is like, so I just put this out there so people won't be surprised. I still recommend planning travels elsewhere during April and May. Rains usually start mid-June and things quickly spring to life again.
I lived in mexico for 5 years as a kid and i drank water from the faucet all the time. Never made me sick. Never. None of us got sick from the water. We bought food from street vendors and other places. Never got sick. In the 5 years i lived there i got sick with chicken pox once and one really bad cold. Drank coca cola too with no problem. I had no cavities while down there too. I ate candy all the time. The first year i was back in the US that is when cavities started showing up. Plus i was getting sick constantly once i was back in the US.
Well, some towns are a whole lot more careful about the tap wayer than others. Exactly zero of the people I know drink tap water unless the house has a really good filtration system. I know someone who got amoebas from the water. She was very sick for weeks. No fun. Not worth the risk and you were very lucky. I do eat food from street vendors. The food is usually cooked.
@@anythingispossiblenow I was trying to remember the other time I was sick and you just named it, amoebas. Well, I know I had them but they didn't make me very sick. I just was given a bottle of medicine and told to take one a day until they were gone. At the time I wondered why I had to take medicine when I felt fine. I did love those fresh vegetables and fruit vendors. Constantly bought from them and watched them peel the cucumbers and cut them into flowers, and peeling the jicama and slicing it. And so on. I had been told those fresh veggies could make you sick if you didn't wash them, but we never did. Being a grubby little kid probably exposed me to all kinds of germs , but it probably revved up my immune system. I just didn't get sick there like i have gotten sick in the US. Probably because I was not allowed to go outside to play much. In mexico I played outside in very day. I got so dark from the sun people thought I was Mexican. At the border when we came back to the US we were stopped because they thought my mom was smuggling Mexican kids into the US. I had straight dark brown hair, brown eyes, and a good tan. And no freckles. I didn't get freckles until I came back to the US. Then they popped out like mad. My mom was a redhead and her skin was very pale. I guess we didn't match her.
The walls around the houses are to keep out intruders. Did you see when they were building the outside walls if they put chunks of broken glass at the top of the walls? That helps keep out intruders. When my mom and i went down to mexico to live we lived in a house that had outdide walls around it. San Miguel de Allende was a brautiful town. I would love to be able to buy one of the houses in mexico that are built around a courtyard. Gorgeous buildings.
Yes. There are still a few places with walls that have broken glass. They don't do that any more. It is either coiled razor wire or electrified wire around the top. Where I live now has coiled razor wire, but it is overgrown by bougainvillea, an equally thorny and impervious layer of protection. In reality, I don't feel it is really necessary, but it is tradition.
The medical care in Ajijic/Chapala is superior. Doctors treat you like you’re a person and not like a number or dollar signs on your forehead. And there’s no 15 minute timer. Lol.
So true! At first all the questions seemed invasive because it had nothing to do with my congestion, but the doctor explained that Americans often are unused to this. They treat the whole person here and really seem to care! So different!
I love the rainy season in Chapala. The nighttime rains make everything seem fresh. I also sleep better with the rain. Love seeing the green mountains.
Yes! I'm hoping it comes early this year!
He Tamara 😊 it’s good to hear that you are feeling better! Spring has sprung here in Canada 🇨🇦 and most of the snow is gone. Temperatures are heading up and lakes and rivers are thawing. Spring is one of my favourite times of the year!! It’s great to hear from you. Your flowers on your garden wall are lovely. Take care and bye for now from Canada ❤
Patzcuaro was really lovely....also is at 7,000' and only an easy day's drive for you. I stayed there for 5 months last summer. Clean mountain air, pine forests and the rainy season was a real treat with the thunderstorms every day AND lightning bugs at dusk!
The lake Chapala area was a definite "no" for us due to the horrible dry season smoke and infrastructure problems not to mention traffic. We're living outside of Oaxaca City in Santa Maria del Tule and have not had those problems here.
I agree about this time of year being the most smokey and hot. If we could leave the Chapala area for any period of time each year that time frame would be to depart mid-April and return at the end of June. Otherwise, I'd consider the rest of the year near perfect weather.
I agree. And on my walk this morning, I thought how spoiled I am. Even at it's worst, it is still pretty nice here!!
We have to go back after six months to retain our health benefits and full pensions, speaking for Canadian Seniors anyway...
How does Canada know your comings and goings? Is it being tracked somehow?
I experience the same thing when I am in Puebla... The temperature is about the same but there is a very DRY season and a Wet season. I thought I would dislike July and August in Puebla until I went last year and I loved it... lovely showers in the Evening and then bright and beautiful mornings! ... However, it gets a bit warmer in May/June but it gets rainy... so yeah... I do Love Mexico! I am back in Oregon for Spring now... but I miss Mexico!!
Hey there! Hope all is well with you? I was looking for recent posts from you and this was the latest I could find... Love to see some photos of your yard and such as I know it's had more time to grow since the last time.. :) Best wishes for Spring weather in Chapala!
I'm posting a video right now, but it isn't about my garden. I will do a garden one again when the rains start in June.
I leave out boric acid mixed with sugar at night to kill roaches, left in a saucer or lightly sprinkled on the counter and floors. You can use Diatomaceous earth, also finely sprinkled or blown lightly with an inexpensive bulb that's sold. It's the scorpions here that freak me out - I'd never seen one before.
Thank you for these tips! I spent good money on some traps from Amazon Mexico and the cockroaches just walk past them and have parties on top of them! I'm going to track down boric acid. I really haven't seen any scorpions for a couple of years, so they aren't that prevalent here. The bobo's are already back this year!!
@@anythingispossiblenow Bobos already? I haven't been outside due to a broken leg, but I'll be healed in time for all the hot weather bugs! The boric acid is available at hardware stores here and is non-toxic to people and animals. The bugs around here sure have attitude, don't they? I've been taunted by the larger cockroaches and had small spiders actually chase me. If you hear about a good solution for mosquitos, aside from sitting next to a fan, I'd love to know about it. 🙂
@@Renee60722 I've been using an herbal insect repellant made by Botica Jalisciense. They have a store by the San Antonio Hospital. I haven't had any mosquitoes yet this year, but it works well to repel flies which bother me on my paito. Hope your leg is better soon!
@@anythingispossiblenow Thank you - I'll try that repellant. The flies and mosquitos are obnoxious.
Wondering about humidity right now and onward. I was charmed watching vids of Huatulco, the bay areas, and their casitas, until learning about the high humidity, reminding me of Houston TX which was ferocious, suffocating humidity. Then I came upon utube vids of Lake Chapala which sounds to me doesn't have that much humidity. Thought I'd ask you. Don't want to stay inside a home turning on AC because of very uncomfortable humidity. Sweating head to toe. Wearing clothes wet from sweat. BTW: you're such a nice lady. In awe of your ability to go solo. I'll be entirely on my own soon here in USA
Thank you for watching! Yes, this area has much lower humidity than any coastal areas. Travel videos rarely mention humidity, which can be stifling!! Right now it is our dry season and humidity is 45% humidity and 73° at about 10:30 a.m. beginning of April. During the rainy season humidity gets somewhat higher, but the weather is cooler. It isn't uncomfortable. I do avoid synthetic fabrics during the rainy season because they don't breathe, but it isn't ever really horribly muggy and hot. I lived in Florida for a couple of years and I just do not tolerate that type of weather well at all. During April and May, it gets into the 90's which some people find intolerable, but again, it isn't humid. I am fine without a/c, just using fans, closing up the house in the middle of the day, and staying inside during "siesta hours". More people are getting mini-split a/c here for those 2 months, but it depends a lot on the construction of the house. Older houses often are built with very thick masonry walls, smaller windows, and very deep patios to provide shade. Newer places often have big picture widows, often facing toward the sun, with no regard to prevailing winds, so they get very hot. Anyway, thanks for your question. You can get detailed historical weather data for any location from the website WeatherSpark.com. Hope that helps.
Very important video. Thanks for letting people know. I’m familiar with the process. When in Mexico I keep up with US politics. Too many complacent and apathetic US Americans. I vote. I have relatives and friends there too. I too visit the Lake Chapala Society. Done a video there 2.5 years ago. Great information.
Thanks for mentioning Sanjay Gupta. I really enjoy your videos. Really good video. I took Polish in High School 1 semester. Korean 2 dialects military terms -9 months Defense Language Institute-US military. And Spanish 1 semester in college, did well but forgot almost everything. I’m not fluent either but took 4 sessions in San Miguel de Allende and Duolingo and other ways. Very good suggestions. I’ve been to conversational tables at times. You made an important video here I go night clubs like Scallion and practice with Mexican people. Also at coffee shops. Listen to music. I frequently go to church services in Spanish. Google translate when needed but not as much as 5 years ago. You said a lot 👍
We're looking for NO CELL RECEPTION places to live. If you only knew how hard it is for many people to live with this technology. Ethernet cords are SO MUCH BETTER FOR PEOPLE.
There are very few places with no cell reception. Back behind a hill perhaps. You will probably have to build the house yourself.

Ya I’m coming from Eugene and I also h are about the fires and with climate change it may increase. I’m mostly leaving here because sure of the annual fire season here - hearing to that sewer overflows at times in the streets
I have never seen sewers backing up in the streets. It is fire season from March through June when the rain starts. We had a bad fire here in the hills this past week thar caused quite a lot of smoke, but nothing like the fires in Oregon and California. There aren't forests here, so they are brush fires with some trees. There will always be something! The lake is super low and will get much lower this year. I'm just hanging in there until mid-June and will be overjoyed to see rain again.
very pleasant lesson! also, extremely informative. I have encountered similar issues. One can also use actual paints designated as "fabric paint". The type used depends on the desired outcome. Thank you for your time!

That house sounds amazing especially the backyard! :) AND you sound exactly like the lady I'd want to know - being a solo woman, a gardener and cook myself. ;) Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you so much for this video - I watched a few of yours and loved them all. :) I'm a single female just turned 60 last year. :) Currently owning a little regenerative farm in rural Nova Scotia (Canada), after moving here from Montreal about a decade ago where I worked as a psychiatrist/psychotherapist most of my adult life. Was planning on moving to Mexico so learning Spanish and exploring different areas. Your video makes me feel that perhaps lakeside might be a good fit for me - I intend to ride my bike everywhere and not owning a car so the separate bike path is amazing. And I love San Antonio area as well and hope to rend a house with a gardening potential as I'm obsessed with cooking and would like to grow most of my produce, or find organic ones to purchase. Here I raise and grow all the food that could survive on the Canadian east coast but winter is difficult here as there is no pasture for the ruminants and most plants don't survive except berries and other winter hardy bushes. A question for you: how easy is it to find organic produce in the area? Do they spray the berry field in Joco? I'm trying to avoid big conventional commercial farming areas.... Terri
I'm sorry I am so slow to respond. There is one "farmers market" on Tuesdays where there is supposedly more organically grown produce, though I don't think there is a certification program here. I used to eat totally organic, but I've given up trying here. I just wash everything really well. At least GMO corn is prohibited here for human consumption, so nobody needs to worry about that. But, quite honestly, growing organically is very challenging. I did manage to get a few tomatoes from my garden and I grew 4 different kinds, but the squash vine borers killed all of my squash plants. Bugs are just a huge problem here and with daily rains, neem oil gets washed off daily. I do grow a lot of herbs and swiss chard did well. Food is incredibly inexpensive to buy here, readily available, and absolutely delicious, so other than planting fruit trees and a passionfruit vine, I have decided not to grow much of my own food any more.
Thank you! I plan to move to Mexico before November and was trying to find out how to vote in the November election. I'll check out the FVAP information and visit my local election office before I head south!

This is such a great idea and I meant to do a comparison video, but the weather was just so horribly hot and things don't look very appealing when everything is so dry. I have this on my list of videos because it is an excellent suggestion. I do have a video on Ixtlahuacan and Jocotepec, but not the other towns in the Ajijic area. I hope you enjoyed your visit here....or move.
