Drive - Toyota Crown vs Mount Panorama
zhlédnutí 40Před 2 lety
The famous scenic public road, which also happens to be a race track. Listen to the 4M engine work hard to maintain the public speed limit of 60km/h* as it climbs Mount Panorama. *Why yes of course that's why I am climbing this hill so slowly :P

Some more video of the mighty Toyota 4M 2.6L engine battling steep hills. The old 4M may not have a lot of go, but it sure sounds great :)

Been ages since I posted anything, so here's a short clip of what it's like to try and climb a hill with the mighty Toyota 4M :P
Driving the Sunraysia Highway - 6 hours in roughly 6 minutes

This is a sort of time-lapsed video recording of my drive from Mildura to Melbourne in my 1976 Toyota Crown wagon, taking 15 second snapshots every 15 minutes or so. Gradually the scenery transitions from yellow to green. And yes, the "slow moving machinery" is my car.

I was requested to upload a video of the 4M engine running in my 1976 Toyota Crown wagon. This is a cold start after performing a valve lash adjustment. I should probably give the engine bay a clean eh -_-
Drive - 1976 Toyota Crown MS83 Wagon
zhlédnutí 874Před 4 lety
Going for a drive around the back roads of Mildura in my 1976 Toyota Crown Wagon. It still has the original 2.6L 4M engine which was rebuilt, and a W40 4 speed manual. The 4M isn't very powerful but it gets the job done, while sounding great :) The audio is OK but you'll hear best with a set of headphones.

    Ahoy Brendon! It's been a long time since the last time we've talked, I hope You and thee venerable Toyota Crown had great experience despite the funky year we've been through~ ^^ I have a question or so if ye don't mind and take your time as ye do~ First of all, is the gear shifter or linkage supposed to be janky and not much of that feeling those borders on each gears respectively, long story short, gearshifting feels loose, less accurate and like trying to "fish" which gears supposed to be on, and also I'm not sure if it's the W40 or W50 on the said Toyota Crown I'm talking about, also if its a 4-speed, what is the gear pattern for it? And is it possible to make it more tighter or accurate on those linkages? Secondly, well, the clutch pump has lost it's cap, brake fluid gone bad as humidity gone into it, especially it's tropical climate around here >.<" I don't see any leaks out from that pedal side, and the pedal is hanging off and no pressure at all, I feel the things needs to be replacing, as it's year and a half more been in said condition of no cap. This can be sorted out as far as I can see, although, what needs to be Aware of if one might replace the clutch pump? Any knowledge or wisdoms ye might have is more than enough and very much appreciated~ Also, take care of yourself and take your time like I said before, no rush~

      Hello there, I was travelling through NSW when you posted your question in said Toyota Crown :) I think CZcams comments might be a bit difficult environment to discuss this, I would recommend joining either the Toymods facebook page (facebook.com/groups/toymods) or the Toymods Forum (www.toymods.org.au/forums/forum.php) if Facebook is not your thing. You would be able to post pictures, and plus more knowledgeable people may be able to help out :)

    I have a 2m rebuild motor and transmission stored in my heated garage, been in a corner under a quilt blanket for 31 years, you read read right, 31 years, pulled it out of my sisters 1970/71 Crown had both completely rebuilt, but she didn't want the car anymore so I got rid of the car and kept the motor and tranny and it's sitting right where I put it! I'm thinking of getting rid of it now, ( do you think it's time) wonder if there's a market for this old iron?

    • @thatcommander
      @thatcommander Před 3 lety

      Hello Perceive, it is a niche market here in Australia, but there are people out there chasing period correct engines, especially "round top" 2M and 4M engines.

    Your MS83 has a nice note to it, what exhaust is it running? It is louder than my crown. And roughly what RPM does it sit on in top gear at 100kmh?

    • @thatcommander
      @thatcommander Před 4 lety

      Hello Chris, the exhaust is er, "custom" :) I am not sure what the previous owner did. Probably the main reason it seems louder is that there is no carpet in the car :) as for engine I believe it is sitting at 3200 RPM or there abouts based on the 3.909 diff and 4th gear being 1:1 ratio.

    Aye, the magnificent Toyota 4M engine in its glory! Music to my ears when it roars back to life~ Many thanks for the upload mate, I really appreciate it. ^^ I have a few questions tho, was the radiator has been painted some time ago? It looks a lil bit new to me. And how did you do the valve lash adjustment? And yeah, I think the engine bay needs some clean up a bit X)c

    • @thatcommander
      @thatcommander Před 4 lety

      Hello, the radiator was re-cored back when the head gasket was replaced. The shop painted the radiator to make it look new :) I did record the valve lash adjustment but such video needs actual editing, so will take longer before it is uploaded.

    Loved how she sounds when driving and also the ol' gearbox sound, ah, the good ol' days. ^^ These station wagon models were quite rare around here, mostly sedans tho and some may have been swapped to a diesel engine due to some reasons, I wonder, how much mileage it has been driven? How was the driving experience of it? And how long did ye own it? I would love to see the engine bay and also listen to the engine revving, especially the exhaust sound 😋. And yeah, it's up to ya, do it at yer own pace and no rush, and thank you for making this wonderful video of this glorious Toyota crown drivin' 😊

      Hello, I still own this car :) has 300 thousand kilometres (~187k miles) on the clock, but quite a lot of the drive train has been renewed. This car never fails to put a smile on my face. I'll oblige you and put up some videos of the engine running. @@thatcommander Ah, I see, I did watched the video before and it was marvelous! And 300 thousand kilometres on the clock? I'm quite impressed! And I'm happy to hear you're enjoying it 😊 I bet she's gonna last quite a long time and who knows, time will tell. I have a few questions tho, was there any major/minor problems happened to the car since you've owned it? If there was, how did you fixed it? And how much gas mileage for this lovely Crown gets when you're driving it?

    • @thatcommander
      @thatcommander Před 4 lety

      @@MysticalSeven7 Hello, according to the previous owner who did most of the major body work, there wasn't much rust - I would link to the build thread on toymods.org.au/forums but you need to be logged in to view it. The Wagon started off blue, the minimal rust was fixed up and resprayed in Toyota's orange. The only major problem that has happened to me is the head gasket did start leaking about 13 thousand km into ownership a couple of years ago - I fixed it and no issue to this day. Fuel economy through the city isn't great, about 16L/100km; out on the highway it can get 10L/100km. The engine sits at around 3200 RPM at 100km/h - I have considered a W50 transmission but on the other hand that will probably just mean I'll have to change back to 4th for every hill :P

    • @MysticalSeven7
      @MysticalSeven7 Před 4 lety

      @@thatcommander Ooh, I see, I do like the colour, it's pretty vibrant ^^ From what I've heard, some owners of the Toyota crowns around this area (maybe they used to have one, some had 5th or upper generations) told that they had problems with the cooling, which maybe they used water mostly (and possibly didn't change often) and fuel economy (petrol engine they had before, possibly the inline sixes), like you've said, wasn't great on cities (mostly towns around here) and economy at the time wasn't pretty good as the fuel was a bit expensive and that's why they converted to Toyota's L series diesel engine. Did you know what might have caused the head gasket leaked? What type of coolant you're using for this engine? And what type of oil did you used for the engine and transmission?

    • @thatcommander
      @thatcommander Před 4 lety

      @@MysticalSeven7 Hello, I am not really sure why the head gasket started leaking - I sent the head in to be checked and they noted that a "gasket sealer" had been used; it was hypothesized that the gasket sealant wore away, effectively decreasing the thickness of the gasket and releasing the clamping pressure of the head bolts, allowing it to leak. I put it back together with no sealant as per manufacturer specifications, and no problem since. The radiator was re-cored and I run Nulon's "green coolant" and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. :) Even with the A/C running during +40 degree C weather in places like Mildura, it run hotter than normal but still didn't overheat. For the engine I am using 20w-50 and 80w for the gearbox.
