Swimming Drill - Mid Sculling
Welcome back to another swim tutorial! In this video, we'll guide you through the Mid Scull drill, an essential technique to improve your freestyle stroke by enhancing your feel for the water during the pull phase.
Why Use the Mid Scull Drill?
The Mid Scull drill is perfect for:
- Improving Water Feel: Develop a better sense of water pressure for an effective pull.
- Enhancing Hand Positioning: Optimize hand movements to maximize propulsion.
- Maintaining High Elbows: Keep a high elbow position to ensure a powerful pull.
- Strengthening Arms: Build muscle endurance in your arms and shoulders.
- **Ensuring Body Alignment:** Maintain proper body alignment for a streamlined stroke.
- **Correcting Technique:** Fix common issues like elbow drop or improper hand placement.
How to Perform the Mid Scull Drill:
1. Start Position: Begin in a streamlined horizontal position.
2. Arm Position: Move your arms to 90 degrees from the side of your body, keeping them high in the water.
3.Sculling Motion:
- Outward Sweep:*Move your hands outward towards the pool edge, leading with your little fingers higher than your thumbs. This creates a blade-like movement, generating lift and propulsion.
- Inward Sweep: Once your hands are in line with your elbows, turn them around and sweep back towards the center, leading with your thumbs higher than your little fingers.
4. Breathing and Balance: Use a snorkel for easier breathing and a pull buoy or flippers for added lift and body alignment.

    Take a look at your right hand as you extend. You are putting on the brakes as you point your finger tips upward.

      Thank you for the message Keith, great pick up on the palm leading on entry with high finger catch. We are currently working on a few hand entry drills with a snorkel on to help with this issue. hopefully next footage with this athlete we can see a great improvement.

    Excellent thank you. Can you do more such videos - like the ones /drills on rotation n breathing, improving breathing techniques, kicking that can be done without flippers or snorkels but just a float kickboard/ or none at all.
