I live in a 5-bedroom house with 4 roommates. Not sure of the square footage but it's all one story, living room, den, 3 full bathrooms, kitchen/dining room, sun room, laundry room, 2 car garage, and 2 back patios. I could be blaring music in my bedroom or the den right by it and half my roommates on the other side of the house wouldn't hear a thing. I only pay $400/month with all utilities included...except my business internet line for working from home: $150/month for that. So....$550 in total.

In Florida. It took me 4 years to build my house. All Concrete Block exterior walls poured solid. Roof is Poured concrete too with 16 inch concrete Beams every 2 feet with 5 inches of concrete on roof surface. Been in too many hurricanes. Never worry now. Worked on house every other weekend since I lived in Orlando but my retirement house was 2 hours away in North Florida. The difficult part was renting all the shoring to hold up the weight of the roof for a month until the concrete was cured enough. Built in an Oak Tree hammock since I am not worried about a tree limb falling on house. Only required a small 2 ton AC. We keep the house at 70 degrees. Have 10KW of solar panels with 20kwh of LiFePO4 batteries to run off grid. 5 acres with 30 Goats and 30 chickens with big garden. Total of 238 yards of 4000 psi concrete which was about $20,000 at the time ($84/yard). We have a wrap around porch on 3 sides which is also concrete. My wife and I are both engineers and like to over build.

I would venture to say our houses are much better insulated. We have extreme heat and cold, so they have to be. You can heat or cool a house in minutes.

I deliver the mail here in the US and I have never seen a neighborhood set up where you have to go so far to check your mail. That’s so crazy! Aside the fact that wood is plentiful for building in the US, understand that many houses in America are in earthquake zones, and wooden houses stand up better than stone houses to earthquakes. Wooden houses are also better and easier to insulate and regulate for heat and cold than stone houses.

To clarify on the snakes those are (at least mostly) ball pythons and they are some of the chillest friendliest snakes you could meet; they have a personality kind of like a really patient and passive cat. I used to have one and sometimes I would just wear him around the house like a scarf. In rural areas where they're popular its really not that uncommon to see people people just walking around with them when the weathers warm. No one is really gonna complain about it since they're usually better behaved than people.

The storm survivability difference isn't as much as you would think from wood to cinderblock. You can super overbuild to survive stronger storms, but most strong storms will flatten your house reguardless.

I give God credit there was 2 tornadoes ripped through my neighborhood when I was a kid. It destroyed all the houses up to us, skipped our house and destroyed all the houses on the other side. Leaving our house the only one standing.
