‘LR’ FOR LONG RANGE | Qatar Airways Boeing 777-200LR Evening Landing at Helsinki Airport
One of only 39 active passenger 777-200LRs making an early evening arrival at Helsinki Airport. Instead of passengers this particular -200LR carried cargo on a DOH-BUD-HEL-DOH routing back in October 2020.
Launched in 2000 the 777-200LR and the 777-300ER were Boeing and GE’s response to airlines' need of new airplanes with additional flexibility. However, for now only 60 777-200LRs are delivered which makes the type far less popular than for example the similarly sized and older 777-200ER model with a total of 422 deliveries. One of the reasons why the -200LR failed to live up to its expectations is quite ironically its long range and large fuel tanks that made it expensive for airlines to operate.
Now that also Delta retired its whole Boeing 777 fleet, it seems like there’s currently only 39 ‘active’ passenger -200LRs making the type quite rare to travel on or even see at airports. At the moment Emirates is this variant's largest operator with 10 aircraft while Qatar Airways is the second largest with 9 aircraft.

Syksyllä 1997 lennettiin Helsingistä B757:lla Kreetalle. Lokakuussa 2004 lensin Finnairin Boeingilla Hki-Vantaalta Teneriffalle ja takaisin, seuraavana vuonna Gran Canarialle ja nuo jäi mulla ainoiksi Finnairin B757 lennoiksi mutta muistan niistä paljon vieläkin, oli sitä vanhan ajan tunnelmaa ☺️ Lokakuussa 2009 ehdin vielä lentämään Finnairin MD-11:lla Hki-Vantaalta Bangkokiin ja takaisin 🛫 Finnairin B757 ja MD-11 oli huippuhyviä koneita! Onneksi heillä A330:n moottorit on vähän kuin MD-11:ssa niin pääsee vielä kokemaan ja kuulemaan vanhat legendaariset äänet! ☺️
