Fwiw, my gf is Saudi and I've spent a few months in Riyadh as a foreigner coming from America. Surprisingly there are people who are openly gay (flamboyant even), even though the laws explicitly prohibit it and people will judge them. It feels a bit like the Saudi government is kind of not prosecuting a lot of it, but they still have the right and they won't make a statement on it which is seriously problematic. Now I'm not saying Saudi is OK because it definitely is not, however I was a bit surprised that the people there were not as crazy bigoted as I expected. That's not a defense of Saudi so much in it's current state, but it does feel like something that might officially change in the future.

I think there's a misconception with the "Just don't be gay for the week" view. Being visibly gay is literally only if you kiss or do anything sexual with a person of the same gender..... In Saudi Arabia, you can't even kiss your wife on the lips in public so gay people thinking it's an attacked on their way of life I think is wrong when its just part of the custom over there. There is no reason to go to a country and shove your identity in their faces when you know it'll offend, by that point you're intentionally doing it to be contrarian. I smoke weed, I wouldn't do that in Singapore though. Im Turkish and in Turkey, Gay people very much exist and are accepted.... The difference is we aren't for promoting it.
