Well I don't sandbag the prelim race anymore, and got a slow kart for the final race. Wasn't expecting a 2-month old kart to already have engine issues 😔

Same format and rules as always. Yeah, the second race was my best of the day. I ended up getting #24 for both qualifying/race1 and the final race - I don't think I got the most out of that #24 kart...

Thanks! 'Ruin' is a bit harsh - there weren't any blue flags shown, so they have no idea what's going on. And making clean, decisive, and quick passes is a part of my race craft that definitely needs improvement.

Sorry, you're asking about the K1 Speed in Mokena - my bad. If you (or a majority of your party) have never raced IRL before, then I'd say go for it. Signing up as a group guarantees everyone races together in three heats of 10, but why that costs extra is beyond me. All three K1 locations in the burbs are pretty similar - same kart type, battery powered, narrow and cramped track layout, variance between karts.

And I was racing during the awards ceremony for heavyweight - where did you end up on points?

Yes there are! Wed and Thurs evenings 5-10pm, Fri Sat Sun 2-10pm, April till October since it's an outdoor track. Each public race is 10 minutes long, or about 12 laps. IIRC you'll need to be 16 or older to sign a safety waiver, and be 4'6" or taller so you fit in the karts. They have helmets, head socks, and neck braces available to use if you need them. K1 Speed has league races once a month, with adults 18+ on the first Sunday of every month and junior/teen league nights two nights later. There's more info on the K1 Speed website: www.k1speed.com/racing-leagues.html

They're pretty good! They came with a set of weird slippery tires last week, but those are wearing out quickly so once good tires are on all of them then they'll be even better!

Thanks Eric! Things are getting settled down and tuned in since this location was bought out at the start of the year, so this month had the fastest times in the 2024 GP thus far. IIRC from 2023 Accelerate league racing (on this track, with these newer models of karts), the fastest laptime I've seen is a 20.7. My personal best is a 20.958

Thanks! I think the newer kart models (compared to BufGrove) help here too. There's a surprising difference in laptimes between diving/defending and sticking to the racing line, but passing a good defensive driver is still tough unless you're multiple tenths per lap quicker.

I can’t speak for this one exactly, as I don’t know if they change from location to location, by the one near me is two qualifying races of 14 laps each, and a final race of 16 laps

That's how these K1 GP events should be: a pair of 14 lap qualifiers (fastest laptime, not position) and then a 16 lap position race. This location just got bought by K1, so they ran the qualifiers exactly like a public session: 12 laps total, a few warmup laps at speed 3 before turning on speed 4.

Alright thanks! I was wondering does the 10 minutes that K1 speed says a race is include the qual sessions? Or is the race 10 minutes and than you have like another 10 minutes of qualifing? Also if I buy the nomal race do I not have any qualifying? Sorry for the questions@@AlexDevineKartRacing

No problem! These monthly league nights are a bundle deal for three races total - you pay $65 for two qualifying races and one position race. One public race is 12 laps. Only your laptimes are tracked for these races - position doesn't really matter. So it's like a league qualifying race in that sense. Sidenote: their website does a bit of exaggerating about "10 minute races". If the track is long enough, then 12 laps could take 10 minutes to complete. But any of the K1 locations I've raced at have been ~20 second laps and thus 5-6 minute public races. Just like how they say the karts get "up to 40mph"...yeah in theory they might, but not in a tight windy track like most K1 locations. Hope that makes sense!

@@AlexDevineKartRacing Same here haha. My PR is a 19.350, but I've seen people get low 18s, so we're closer to a 4-minute race.

And the last endurance event got cancelled once K1 bought them out - the only events they are allowed to run are these monthly league nights. I'm already signed up for the Spring league and lightweight Ironman seasons. Can't wait! 😻

Thanks Eric! Yeah I will be running this year's Challenge GP at Mokena all season. I was out of state for both the January and February rounds, so Mokena to me is the best chance I have to qualify for 2024 IL State. How's the season at Addison going?

Understandable. My season at Addison has been going very well. I finished P2 out of 23 drivers overall in the March GP race. I am currently sitting 3rd overall in terms of championship points for the season. We had a lot of new and existing drivers showed up to race than we had last season. We had around 23-25 drivers showed up for the first 3 months in to the season. I was informed by management that they are having a major track layout change on Track 1 in an about few weeks. The track will be a little longer with more turns as I was being told. It will not be a 18-19 second lap time anymore. Most likely, it will be a 20-21 second lap time. This is going to be a learning experience for me to learn the new track and finding the right racing lines. Have fun racing at the new K1 location. Hopefully we’ll race together at Addison anytime soon.

Yup! The KCA abbreviation in the title is short for Kart Circuit Autobahn, it's a short drive south of Joliet, and it's open from April through October. They're open to the public for arrive-and-drive sessions, there are multiple rental kart leagues throughout the year, and a club series with multiple classes to race your own karts as well!

Absolutely, the two-level layout is sick! Especially the downhill ramp into the hairpin turn - that's a prime spot for a good ol' fashioned divebomb. Also I think the last few corners leading up to the start/finish line, and the right-hander right before the up ramp, could be fast and wide enough to have side-by-side racing.

I haven't been to the Morrisville Rush Hour track yet - are those karts gas or electric?

They are electric. The Morrisville track is really nice, the karts were slow last time I went. Supposedly, they have recently turned them up,@@AlexDevineKartRacing

For indoor rentals it's my favorite track. Great use of the larger sq.ft. warehouse (relative to K1 and similar), the track layout matches the kart performance so that each corner is slightly different, and the gas powered karts drive more naturally than electric. Autobahn in Joliet is still my favorite overall for the side-by-side racing, but they have similarly powered gas karts (as Rush Hour) on a half-mile track so there's room for multiple lines through each corner.

My one race at Concept Haulers was the 30 lap Halloween GP in their rentals on the old surface. Everyone who's driven the new repaved track is over the moon about it!

Yes, we both drove the #26 kart for the shootout. It wasn't used in the GP at all - they set it aside for being "too fast" 🙃

I was defending that turn 1 move the first couple laps, then slowly opened the door afterwards in hopes of gaining time to 1st place @KendlerKarting I figured if you were going to stick a nose in at turn 1 that you'd jump at the opportunity...but if there's a queue lining up behind me then it's best for me to never risk it.

Fun fact: the replacement kart in the final race for November was the same one I qualified at 2nd (19.281) in December!

Yeah the karts could definitely be worked on to be closer in pace, but everyone is in the same boat. The only things that will really bother me are when someone else gets a much better time in the same kart, and dirty tactics in a position race. Even with new tires being put on every kart a few months ago, by now there's over a second per lap difference between the worst kart to the best kart at K1. There are some batteries in these karts that have 100% power for a few laps, then lose some top-end power and become half a second slower per lap. The track record is either 18.90 or a high 18.8, as I know there's about a dozen people that have gotten an 18s hotlap. My personal best is an 18.927 during qualifying in August (which I recorded and is on the channel so check it out *wink* )

Aside from a little bit of "rubbing is racing" at 14:01, I'm stoked that I was able to make that pass happen at the first opportunity I had. And the fact that we went side-by-side into Schumacher and didn't wipe each other out was 👌

I'll give you credit, it was a great idea! I should have added in clown music from 15:28 to 15:43 - seeing 1st through 4th all run into the grass was an absolute laugh 😂

Unfortunately yes, the rental karts have the same model of motor, but they are not 100% equal in terms of performance on track. The average speed by the end of the main straight is 43mph, but the worst I've seen is 41mph, and I've had a rocketship rental hit 46mph!

Definitely :) Could've been third place with a faster qualifying lap or a better opening lap, but it also could've been a lot worse.
