Gear reviews, discussions, and adventures dealing with everything outdoors including Knives, Guns, Equipment, Fishing, Camping, Hiking, Work, Boating, Paddling, Research, etc. I am a Park Ranger in Florida and wanted to add my input and thoughts on gear reviews and discussions from a place of common sense, day to day use as an outdoor professional. We have extremely diverse and harsh environments here in Florida that wreak havoc on all of the gear we use, and adding saltwater into the daily mix - even in forested areas, just makes our expectations for our equipment that much more demanding. I hope to be able to give a different approach, expose some hidden gems, and overall just help viewers out with advice on gear they may be interested in. The outdoors is my passion, and I have devoted my life to protecting and preserving our environments and resources. This all comes form the heart, from someone who lives and works outside.
Spyderco Stretch 2 K390 Long Term Full Review (2 Years)
These are my final thoughts on the k390 stretch 2! Simply astonishing is all I can say. Filmed vertical on accident in 1 take just because I expressed my thoughts and feelings from the heart and honestly and every take I did after just felt too scripted, so I'm posting the original. It was all on the fly so take some of the data points for what they are and enjoy!

If you're curious how K390 does on the florida coast and elements, my findings are here. Thanks for watching!

Sharpening BD1N - 600 Grit Cheap Waterstone Finish (see description)
zhlédnutí 986Před 3 lety
Sharpened up some BD1N steel today. It takes a clean apex readily and sharpens relatively easy, but holds an edge like much harder to sharpen steels. As you can see it will easily cut free standing phone book paper with as low as a 600 grit edge. I highly recommend it for kitchen use, especially for the price. 🥃🤘🇺🇸🏝🔥

The video is a bit lengthy but there's a lot to say about this great watch as well as the giveaway details! King of budget watches? I'd say so. Rock On!

Spyderco Sage 2 - Masterclass in Simplicity
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 6 lety
Just going over my initial ramblings and thoughts on The Spyderco Sage 2. There are a couple moments in the video where I kind of say the opposite of what I am getting at but I try to make sure I clarify if I did. The Sage 2 is a work of art, and another one of those knives that the price tag is justified through the intangibles and accumulation of fine details. Thanks for watching!

Kershaw Dividend M390 UPDATE - Issues & Sharpening
I got the endura, two versions that I love. K390 and lc200n, obviously for opposite purposes. But I clean out all the time because of sweat and sawdust and grime. I got a little trick it's pretty easy to reassemble now. You almost reassemble the whole knife except let the back lock bar stick out and then you shove it in and push the threaded secondary pivot in at the same time
Cool watch, 44mm is just a bit big for me, they need a 40-42mm eco
What sunglasses are those?
44mm? I think is 42mm! Correct me if I'm wrong!
The whole flexing micarta thing is a complete non-issue for me. Sure, it might flex a bit in extreme situations, but that's a lot different than the entire handle flexing, like in a Bugout. Those steel liners are stupid stiff and confidence inspiring. I've had my Crucarta PM 2 for about a week and absolutely love it. And like yours, mine came stupid sharp! The only knife I ever bought that came sharper was a TRM Neutron 2. That thing was beyond scalpel sharp!
Lot of words saying nothing.
U talk a whole lot but say a whole lot of nothing.
This is one of Spyderco's best knives.
Love that design . Price here (uk) is ridiculous though. Roughly 300 dollars
I had the same concerns when I got this Crucarta PM2, but after over 2 years of EDC, I have had zero issues with this design. They did the Cruwear nice as well as mine sharpens and deburrs great. Zero issues.
Great to hear!! I’m probably going to pick one up again. It looks like it’s turned into a real winner
@@rangerjonoutdoors6429 Right on! But you have more choices Ranger Jon ..... Para 3 Crucarta, Military 2 and even a Crucarta Manix 2. I grabbed a Para 3 about a month ago when they first hit and gave it the second sharpening this A.M. Really felt good, edge came up fast, and deburred nice. I run a coarse edge on it at 600 grit as it's a shop knife, its impressive and strops back well. The micarta on my Para 3 is a dark brown/red, not tan like my Paramilitary 2, not sure if the colors change from batch to batch.
I got delivery of my Military 2 in November of last year (2023). I think you should try one.
That's my favorite EDC, I've carried the Stretch 2 everyday for over a year. K390 takes an excellent edge and keeps it.😊
Mine started slightly rusting only after a few days of pocket carry. It would get a little damp from body moisture but that’s about it. I love the edge the blade takes and retention but hate that it starts corroding so quickly. The knife feels like a LW PM2 to me and that’s why I really wanted it. I put a layer of oil on it, stored it away and haven’t carried it in about a year but going to start again. I just have to keep it maintained a lot better than my knives with VG-10, S35VN, M390, D2 and even other Carbon steel blades with a lot less chromium content.
Leafjumper....get it
Does the stretch 2 have a thinner grind then say the endura and endela? Been wanting some k390 since spyderco released it. Thanks!
Good buffing wheel n green compound will bring it right back
Can confirm how much of a pain in the ass these lockbacks are to put back together
Perfect ergonomics for me!
Man, you have me wanting to swear off stainless... Something about non stainless steels is just so endearing. They take on so much character and just tell a story that is unique to the owner. You've absolutely sold me on a K390 Stretch.
I have a police4 serrated, and I'm having a hard time finding Fine/XtraFine diamond cylindrical rods for sharpening. I see some low/medium grit, but I'd like fine for such a premium blade steel. I found some red ruby cylindrical rods from 2mm to 10mm but I'm not sure they are hard enough to do a good job sharpening k390. Any suggestions for sharpening the serrated version?
Did the research, the diamond conical rod + Ruby rods will work
DLC blade and camo G10 is 🔥...
Sold me on one
Thanks so much! You helped me avoid a bad decision. This would really bother me. I’ll go with the G10 S45VN option.
Funny how far off the reserve people that open boxes with knives are. If your actually doing work, chopping carpet, carving wood, skinning game or really cutting anything away from civilization the LAST thing you want is your hand or digits near the blade. Get the wrong splinter or some nasty innards on your hand and that's an unusable hand and toxic shock before you get to a hospital or drug cabinet. That said don't think any knife with gaps on the back is a good field knife and the front better have no bits that cause blisters or bleeding with prolonged use. I get it though I LOVE finger groves and holding blades for craft work and under roof hobbies and reach for a cold steel tuff or tuff lite above other blades.
Great update.. Answered all my questions and more, as currently wear my automatic divers in similar daily functions as yourself, and looking for a now reasonably priced replacement. As personally finding having to adjust the minutes every couple of days for accuracy, the watch always seems to catch putting on a rain jacket or backpack strap. With the rubber divers strap along with the crown being at the 4pm position is a must for me now knowing the reliability with the eco-drive and accurate time keeping..
I have the micarta PM2 also and was immediately disappointed in the same thing about the micarta.
Nice review. I have the K390 in the Delica, Endela, and the Police. I wouldn't hesitate to get the Endela. It is perfect for an EDC that is not scary to the sheepeople.
Funny watching this. I too stopped buying when I got this one. Can't explain it. Once you find the ONE, you get it. Good luck to whatever brand, style you're looking for. You know when you find it.
John, I watched all your reviews regarding the Spydercos from the PM2, to the Military, to the Stretch 2. Your mentioned the Endela K390 for your next potential pickup! Well I have all the knives you reviewed, recently picked up the Endela. I must say I hope you pull the Tigger on the Endela K390, you will love your purchase. I must say it's probably the my best pick since my Spyderco evolutionary trip. I don't miss the choil on the Stretch 2 like I thought I would, the Endela is definitely my go to EDC. That's a pretty bold statement because I really love them all. Endela K390 is the ticket, thanks John for your reviews & hope more to come!
Have you tried the LeafJumper?
What do you think about Para 3?
I also have the stretch 2 and my only con is the lock up has a little vertical blade. Seems to be a common complaint with saki city back locks. Funny thing is my standard VG10 delica has the same problem but for some reason my k390 delica wharncliffe ( possible misspelling) does not!!! Figure that one out??
I just got a Duro. Love it, but this watch looks nice, too. It would be great if it kept atomic time, but solar is awesome.
Aaaand I just bought the Eco-Drive. 🤦🏻♂️
How does the pivot look after the neglect?
Man I applaud you for this. I have a leaf jumper in k390 and it is my favorite knife ever.
i simply cannot like the 0150, i dont understand why the screwback ends where the back edges of the watch end, it gives me the impression that the case is made from 3-4 pieces instead of one and that's a big deal for me since i cannot get that 'robust' feeling with it
I love this watch
My first citizen ecodrive I bought during my doctoral studies in Hamburg. I did with watch everything. I scratched it during manual work in lab. I scrached its mineral glass. Finally I destroyed integrated rubber strap. I own travelling citizen watch gps sattelite wave, but it is quite expensive. Now I bought citizen diver in pepsi color. I hope it will last. I am only afraid of mineral glass. Sapphire would be better. But nowadays I am more careful with my watches. When I manually work in lab I put them on the table.
I have this same watch. I put a NATO strap on it. I love it - super bright lum that lasts. If I know I am entering into a prolonged dark situation, I give it a blast with my flashlight and I am set for hours. I alternate between a dive watch and a field watch. I gravitate towards these two types of watches because I love the history behind them and the functionality of them in low-light environments.
Both excellent imho . Been using 2 pm2 and 3 manix 2 s . The lightweight Rex 45 is super sweet
Ranger Jon, would love to hear an update. How is this watch doing two years later? Still rocking it as your daily driver? Awesome video - loved it!
Watch is doing awesome. That big scratch in. The video was still the only scratch I have on it. It’s 100% still my daily driver I’ll have to film an update video. Seems like a lot of people want to know. Thanks for watching and reaching out!!
I don't like choils so I have the endura k390. I have a pm2 in rex 45, millie in cruwear among many other knives. I carry the endura the most.
That's a sexy patina, sounds weird to say haha but whatever it is!
Perhaps a Leafjumper would suit you better than an Endela...
You covered all the points beautifully I appreciate it. This is great for people interested and watching a review before the purchase I’ll have mine soon
Just a guess, but it's possible that they opted not to lengthen the lip, as seen in the G10 version, to prevent potential degradation of the end part of the lip, near the lock area, with a softer material like micarata.
The Leaf Jumper in K390 is an awesome design as well. Great steel.
I understand that this watch has a mineral crystal because, if used for its intended application, the mineral crystal holds up better to pressure than the sapphire crystal does.
These have thick crystals, and at that sort of thickness the sapphire strength is on par with mineral. At this price point they usually use mineral to keep costs down. The proof of that is all the higher end divers which use sapphire. Sapphire is somewhat more reflective and since visibility can be more of an issue underwater, they need to have an AR coating which in turn pushes the price up a bit more.
It’s awesome 👏. Knives look good to me worn in , especially Spydercos and bm s . Wearing in some fat cf modded ones atm , about a year or so in and they re still looking the same
It’s the perfect edc size for me . I like the para 3 as well for summer carry . Either or tbh . It’s not too big imho and when I bear down with the either one there’s no painful spots for me personally . I quite like the pm2 action better
Awesome knife and beautiful patina
