I've finally been able to remove the driveshaft and the engine is now out. Time to start looking at the differences between the R6A and RFZ versions of the 2.0 block in the XM. Bits are starting to be swaped over, too.

In this video, I start tearing things apart in order to replace the old engine (with oil consumption and pressure issues) with a "new" one. Things went slowly but surely...until meeting a seized intermediate bearing on one of the driveshafts. If you want a clear, efficient tutorial, this is not it - I've only followed Haynes instructions when I really couldn't figure things out as they appeared.

The thermostat was still the original one, from 1984 - no wonder it had finally seized and led to overheating. Thankfully, replacing it is a simple job and it seems no harm as been done - I got out of the motorway as soon as I heard the coolant spraying in the engine bay. After this, the car has successfully gone for a MOT and it's been sold. I'm already missing it!

      Thanks! It seems to have helped - it has "only" used 1L of oil in 2500 kms. Very good news, if it stays that way the engine won't have to be rebuilt any time soon

    Thanks, very useful ; 2024 gonna rebuild mine, it was 39ºC yesterday, full A/C on for 3 hours, alternator gave up the ghost in the end( Voltmeter, digital, 11.9 volts).

      Ah, yes, 11.9 means it's not charging. Did it also start making noise or it just doesn't charge?

    For the headlights I usually wet sand with p1200 then spray with 2k clear aerosol paint and they look like new and last a long time

      Sounds like a good recipe. From what I've seen, the next sanding steps help further refine the finish, but the P1200 should get rid of the fogginess in most cases. I haven't sprayed these with clearcoat because they'll have to be replaced eventually and the car doesn't stay out in the sun for too long, but that's what should be done, of course!

      É verdade, ficou bem melhor! Não coloquei, mas sei que o ideal até é serem envernizadas novamente. No Rover 400 que tenho, poli há coisa de 2 anos e só encerei uma vez depois disso - perderam algum brilho, mas ainda estão OK. Claro que depende também do sol que apanha. Em relação ao produto, não sei o nome ao certo porque o tenho há anos - mas é à base de silicone, era um frasco preto e é da 1z - acho que entretanto deixaram de se chamar Einszett e passaram a ser Nextzett. EDIT: É o Kunststoff Intensivpflege

    Overall, it looks like you've made a good acquisition. All those small niggles are easy to fix and it is worth getting the car in fully working order. Those cars design is timeless (intemporal) and they remain good looking cars. The km are flashing, suggesting you may need to do a proxy alignment. There's a software tool called Multiecuscanner that is worth purchasing. It costs 50€ or so but you get your money back very quickly. The word you were missing is "filler" (betume). Yes, the previous body work job should have leveled the metal up more. Short term attention is recommended as it can lead to rust, making the repair more onerous. Please by all means, post videos with those repairs even if short ones.

      Thank you! The issue with the odometer flashing happened because I turned the engine on too quickly, I think - I didn't let the check finish. I have already come across multiecuscanner - I was about to buy a OBD2 reader, but cheap ones are limited comparing to what multiecuscanner can do. As for the cracked filler, I'm not considering it a priority - a "reliable source" told me that the paint is 3 years old, and the filler crack is thus more recent than that. The car stays in the garage and this is far from the coast, so it should still hang in there for a while. Thank you, I'll definitely upload other videos as I fix these things!

    If you are right about 4.5 litres, your oil level is way too low. XU10 should take 4.7l without a filter change and 5.4l with a filter change according to the service book and manual. If that doesn't help then I would check the pressure with the pressure gauge. These engines are bombproof so I would say the engine is fine but your oil is way too low. These flexi couplings are a common fault and not very nice to replace, but still a lot easier than working with the Diravi while the engine is in place :D

      There's conflicting information online, but I trust the numbers you're mentioning. In the end, I've filled it to 4.5L (was showing at the top of the dipstick indentation) and the low oil pressure warning was still there. I didn't leave the engine running for long with the first 4L - and only at idle. I'll take this into account for the future, but this engine was already tired - using 1 L of oil per 1000 kms and with the matching strong smell in the exhaust. It's low miles, but something went wrong with it before I bought it. I imagine Diravi makes it more difficult! Edit: thank you for your videos about the XM - they have been useful :)

      @@oldgold8542 Sounds like a valve stem seals to me. My BX was burning oil and puffing blue smoke when the engine was cold because of them. My mum's XM with the XU had 418k km on the clock when it was taken off the road due to rust, but the engine was fine. Thank you, I'm always happy to help!

    Those horrible XM jacking points :D They bend just from looking at them the wrong way and sills start rusting from there. I always jacked up mine from the subframes

      Apart from one of the "ears" being bent, these jacking points are still sort of ok. But that's just because it's a portuguese car that seems to have lived far enough from the coast, otherwise it would be a different story!

    Boas, parabéns por mais um bom video e pelo regresso ao youtube. Deixo algumas dicas: -Tenta não desapertar coisas com a chave dinamométrica, especialmente continuar a fazer força depois do "tec" dela, isso descalibra-a. Consegues comprar um roquete extensivel no lidl barato ou um "rabo de força" também relativamente barato em lojas online. -Não sei o que fizeste quando tiraste o cárter mas o problema deve estar na bomba de oleo, ou tem sujidade na rede (silicone por exemplo) ou tem a mola interior já gasta, que pode ser facilmente substituida, ou a própria bomba ja com bastante desgaste interno. -Podes ter apenas o sensor marado (duvido) mas se tiveres ferramentas para isso basta desenroscares o sensor e ligares um manometro de pressão, a pressão normal penso que seja cerca de 6 bares.

      Boas! Obrigado A chave dinamométrica que usei já estava estragada, daí usá-la para desapertar coisas mais chatas. Comprei recentemente uma que tenciono só usar para apertos :) Quando tirei o cárter, limpei os pedaços partidos que tinha na rede. Para tirar a chapa que impede o óleo de andar a bater de parede a parede, tive de aliviar a parte exterior da bomba e pareceu-me que a mola estava a fazer imensa força, mas sim, pode algo não ter ficado bem. Há um ano já existiam problemas de pressão, e a mensagem ia-se tornando mais frequente à medida que o nível de óleo também ia descendo. É que este motor já consome 1L por 1000 kms desde aí. É por este historial desde que o tenho que preferi simplesmente encontrar um motor usado e despachar o assunto - se o motor estiver bom, é sempre um risco. Mais tarde, talvez desmonte este para ver exactamente o que se passava. Obrigado pelas dicas, não deixas de ter toda a razão!

    I have a pretty bad headache right now and audio is not helping at all but your content and presentation still made me enjoy the trip and subscribe to your channel. Route and car selection is perfect. I would watch at least 10 minutes of rainy, mountain road view from XM so I did not like the cutting and timelapsing of those parts. Thanks for the experience and keep up with your beautiful work.

    I have a 1985 16TRS auto here in Sydney in the same Vert Cali metallic colour. It is slow and sluggish when cold and could use more power but great cruiser.

      It's a great colour. That's quite a step up from mine, both in toys but also in the engine department. I agree, it's a great car for the open road. It's where the suspension is at its best, too

      Hello! I guess I've arrived late, but they're 13 cm at the back and 16 at the front. 17 cm speakers won't fit without fitting an adapter to the door. :)

      Yes, it was flawed. And the car is a bit too soft. I don't drive this car often, but it's certainly not as competent as french superminis of the time around bends. It shines in almost everything else, though. Space, engines, running costs, even styling.

    Che bello rivedere la Prisma viva. Ho usato per 50000 km la Prisma 1500LX di famiglia. Oggi e' sui cavalletti, in garage, sotto un vecchio lenzuolo, in attesa di tempi migliori. Grazie per queste emozioni. (La 1600 con l'iniezione IAW Marelli era la migliore!)

      @@oldgold8542 Ciao! La mia 1500 LX è ancora sui cavalletti. Ho acquistato qualche piccolo ricambio e preparato una lista di interventi da fare per il suo ritorno in vita. Ed anche una procedura per ridurre il trauma all'auto dopo tanti anni ferma. La Prisma era un'auto molto bella, elegante ed alla moda e per me è piena di ricordi personali ma l'arredamento ed i componenti secondari sono di qualità non molto buona e ne devo tenere conto quando ci lavorerò per rimetterla a posto. Spero che la tua ti dia tante soddisfazioni e molto a lungo: l'iniezione della Marelli è all'avanguardia ancora oggi

    Temos uma viatura idêntica (de 1994) na família e chegou à poucos meses à minha responsabilidade em mantê-la em bom estado. Tem sido uma agradável surpresa verificar que, em 1994 a FIAT já conseguia colocar semelhante potência num "simples" motor 1.2 Com quase 30 anos, este carro está, definitivamente, para durar. (pena é a chapa que não aguenta os maus tratos de outros condutores nos locais de estacionamento mais apertados...)

      Para mim, nem é tanto a potência. Aliás, a Ford conseguiu 75 cv do 1.25 logo um ano depois, só para dar um exemplo rápido. O que acho digno de nota é o binário do motor em regimes baixos, a suavidade de funcionamento, a economia. Tirando as juntas que apodrecem mas são mais ou menos baratas e fáceis de trocar, também é um motor muito fiável. Tanto que andou a ser montado em carros da marca até há poucos anos - uma vida útil de sensivelmente 30 anos, com poucas alterações. Em relação ao carro em si, claro que tem os seus pequenos problemas, mas fáceis de ir resolvendo e a manutenção é barata. Vale a pena mantê-los a andar, ainda são bem agradáveis de conduzir!

      Não foi cópia, foi mesmo parceria com a Honda. A base é a mesma, mas cada um tem os seus acabamentos, motores, caixas, acertos de suspensão, níveis de equipamento e de insonorização. Para além disso, só na Honda houve versão Aerodeck, enquanto que só na Rover houve versão de 4 portas!

    Better not to run till the fuel light or do not rely on the bulb. ( There is still bulb on the XM , i believe , not 100% sure but....) I had a friend that did this all the time on a R21 and one day, the bulb went out and he ran out fuel.

I've tried making it better for part 4; it won't ever be perfect, because the microphones in these 2 smartphones suck (and worse, they suck in different ways, which makes it difficult to adjust levels). Is it a 2.0 injection as this? It's a great car for travelling, that's for sure

    Cool! I have the same engine in my Xantia and it's indeed a bit agricultural. Not that slow because a Xantia is a bit lighter. Have fun in NL!

    Circa un mese addietro ho acquistato una 146 di seconda mano ma diverse volte mi da problemi di chiusura centralizzata ,a volte quando lascio l'auto parcheggiata ,togliendo le chiavi si chiude la porta lato giuda ,e non si apre nemmeno con la chiave dall'esterno ,riesco ad aprirla solo dall'interno tirando l'asta dell'apertura se ho fortuna di lasciare aperta la porta posteriore

    Os apoios de cabeça traseiros são de série na versão 75 ELX (está descrito no catálogo do modelo Fiat Punto), que é a versão de topo de gama do Fiat Punto. Quanto às jantes são específicas e opcionais para as várias versões do modelo em ensaio excepto da versão GT que são completamente diferentes. Um bom vídeo com muitos detalhes sobre o modelo em causa. Achei particularmente engraçado o conteúdo da mala ao ínicio do vídeo, uns acessórios que poderão dar jeito para consertar alguma possível avaria jajajaja. Brincadeiras à parte continuação de um bom trabalho...

      @@oldgold8542 Olá, pois isso dos apois de cabeça estarem em falta em alguns Puntos ELX é um pouco estranho realmente, mas como disse no catálogo dos primeiros modelos menciona isso, além de que, agora estive agora, pois não tinha conhecimento dessa versão HSD, aqui a cuscar a revista Guia do Automóvel na secção usados e pude verificar que as versões do Punto são as S, SX, SX HSD e ELX, para além das versões especiais... Obrigado ☺

      Hello! It's not a specific product. The plastic got smooth and shinny through a combination of wet sanding and machine polishing. For the polishing phase, I've used Menzerna PF2500, but I suppose there are other alternatives

    My Dad had one of these 1986 model 1600 rusted like away in 1994 he then bought a 1990 Lancia Delta GT.ie (19000 miles) it was a lovely car never had any problems with it at all
