Registrace 12. 04. 2022
I moved to Nova Scotia in the Spring of 2022. Coming from Ontario, we are one family of the many who are making their way out to the Maritimes. Here is where I will document our experiences and share what we learn for any who want to follow our story. Thanks for watching!
Port Credit Ontario Town History
I made this a few years ago when we were living in Ontario. This is our life before Nova Scotia, hopefully it's interesting from an historical perspective. I just needed a location to put this video and thought this channel was the best option I had.

Landlord Rant: Nova Scotian Struggles with Band Tenants

I am both a landlord and a tenant. I know how it feels to be on both sides of the divide and here is my opinion based on recent experience. I had to cut out some sections where I may have been too passionate or open about details. So hopefully this is still coherent!? #landlord #novascotia #renting
The Story of Streetsville, Ontario
zhlédnutí 125Před 2 měsíci
Ok so it's not Nova Scotia, but I made this film a couple of years ago and wanted to put it online somewhere. Before living in Nova Scotia we lived in Streetsville, Ontario. It was a village surrounded by suburban city and a lot has occurred in the small region over the years. So I give a little background on what John Lennon and the movie 12 Years A Slave have in common. #canadianhistory #onta...

Scotsburn Dairy: The Story of the Century
zhlédnutí 4,4KPřed rokem
For a century the small village of Scotsburn was responsible for producing dairy throughout eastern Canada. The name Scotsburn is still widely known as the primary ice cream company in the Maritimes. In the early twentieth century a group of farmers started a co-operative that lasted for 100 years. This is the history of the dairy and also a nod to the museum, A Walk Through Time, that has capt...

Hurricane Fiona: Before & Aftermath

We experienced our first Atlantic Canada hurricane and it may well have been the biggest or at least most sustained high winds that this part of the world has on record. Staying awake all night listening to trees fall around us in the dark was harrowing and something I don't want to experience again. Thankfully all trees fell away or perpendicular to our house and so we didn't have any damage t...

We live in Canada and moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia in March 2022. This is the first time we had even been the province as a family and we hadn't even seen our house in person before putting down an offer and committing to life in Nova Scotia. We aren't sorry one bit and this first video shows how things have been going over the past two months since we relocated to the maritimes. Keep watc...
We don’t want you here anyway!
Everywhere in Canada, is expensive, do you know the history of Canada, well, it doesn't want to give up its ties with the Monarchy... we have Loyalists that came here and made this country a mess! Instead of being a republic like the States, we still tie into Britain, which is the worst country and STILL HAS A MONARCHY!! because Britain has taxes, taxes taxes, WE NEED TO CUT THESE TIES.. Americans were right to throw out the Brits! Unfortunately those that like the British monarchy came here the LOYALISTS.. and we now mirror the same kind of Government, our Parliament is just useless !
Having lived in the UK, Canada and now the US, I am shocked at how little difference there is in the cost of living between all three. I don’t think a republic or a constitutional monarchy makes any difference.
Glad. You are here. You are welcome 🙏 here ❤
Funny thing, the algo just showed me one of your videos on life in NS, because I live in Cape Breton I guess. I checked out your channel and now you are in the US. Funny, but not so much fun for you I see. Sorry for the situation you found yourself in. I moved out here 18 years ago from Ontario. Not sure why you left NS, I only watch a couple of vids, including this one. I guess you learned the landlords lesson on the first go. I can tell you, it could have been worse. You probably know that, though. I'm glad you found a better tenant. I don't know if you intend on keeping that property, but I thought you might benefit from my pointing out something most folks are overlooking. That would be global warming. Perhaps it is not on your radar. If it is, good choice to keep the place so far. In any case, rising temps are going to crush a lot of places. Nova Scotia is one of the places that has some reasonable future temps. Because that future is less than thirty years from now, you might find it more useful to come back to Canada. I expect our failure to respond so far, will bring things to the fore by some measure. The ban of foreign purchases of property in Canada is said to end in 2027, but it might get extended out past 2030. We can't build fast enough, so the value of property is high. Considering all that is in store for global property values, holding on to that property could be hard, but worth it. Good luck, too bad you had to leave🍀
Remember Portapique? No one was held accountable. There is no decent law and order in NS.
The best weather in Nova Scotia is the valley and use pure vanilla as a bug repellent. Done!
High taxes, crumbling infrastructure, roads too narrow for the amount of traffic, no escape route in an emergency, too expensive. , health system broken, but the mayor gets the highest salary of all mayors in Canada.
canada is a high cost, low value nation. you pay a lot, and what you get in return varies considerably, but on balance, you dont get much. It is not getting, or going to get better w/o drastic changes which canada, is not really up to it. Primary reason, is the FIRE sector in canada skims huge amounts of money and produces.......nothing really. Canada's economy has to come resemble a collection of ponzi schemes, far too many immigrants, and the govt and corporate sectors are very corrupt despite this idea globally that canada is pretty free of corruption. The regimes in ottawa do not act in the national interest, so not surprising hardly anyone else does either. This attitude, filters downwards. Economic and social mismanagement, is endemic in this nation. So there it is....why you pay so much and cant get a family doctor unless your parents die and give you their spot at their doctors practice in their will.
Compared to New Brunswick, housing is nearly half the cost vs NS and taxes, utilities are cheaper as well. You'd likely save an additional $500/Month for a similiar property. IMO NB is Canadas best kept secret.
Great video! I grew up in streetsville, will always be home.
bro if i saw you with a bug net on id laugh my ass of at ya
We actually have and had 2 Costco's in Halifax / Dartmouth.
I am thinking of renting a portion of my place. But I will have a template contract with additional clauses that must be agreed to by the tenant. I will be asking for three months rent in advance (first, last month and third month's rent for any damage that will be refundable). Also, I will ask for proof of employment that I will follow up on in person as well as a credit check requirement. No guarantee . Can you recommend anything else to look for or require? Thanks, I have subscribed!
I recommend signing up to “Landlords Unite” on Facebook, there’s a lot of great advice on there by some very experienced landlords. All the best!
Very Risky stuff. There are professional rent skippers out there that know the system very well and that can live for YEARS by stretching each place they go to to the limit paying only 2 months rent usually (first and last) and then moving to the next rental place. This happened to my girlfriend after she had a gem of a renter (doctor from Egypt) for 4 plus years! He had to go to California to help his very ill mother.
What city in Ontario did you come from in March 2022?
Mississauga
I seem to recall that you also have to do a vehicle safety check every year too, which is a hassle and another "tax" in a sense.
I think it’s every two years, I forget.
Every two years
I am interested in knowing the living expenses of other provinces . Perhaps food costs could have been added to this be added to this comparison? As well it would be good to show an entire year having gone through four seasons. How about car gas prices per litre? Education differences? The demeanour of the Novascotians. I will be viewing with interest your future content🥰
As I was surfing the 'net here at home in Burnaby, BC, trying to find a source for my old favourite, Grape Nut Ice Cream, I found that there was none available outside the Maritime Provinces. Then I saw the Scotsburn name. I was immediately reminded of the stories about my grandfather, William (Willie) Mclean and the Scotsburn Creamery. He and his sons (my Uncle Elwood and my dad, Edgar) grew up around the creamery business and they expanded creamery operations into New Brunswick. I spent practically my whole childhood around the Harvey Creamery, which by the time I was born in 1945 was a thriving enterprise, having shipped many tons of butter overseas during WW2 (a considerable percentage of which ended up on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean) sunk by U-boats! As time went on, Harvey Creamery was bought out by Capital Co-op and our family moved away to Fredericton in 1958 (for me, at age12, a traumatic time). Does anyone recall my grandad, Willie McLean and his sons Edgar and Elwood? Generations of my McLean ancestors are buried in the Scotsburn Cemetery.
I moved here 3 years ago. My monthly utilities went down about $100. I don't pay for water now that I'm on a well. I was paying $90/month for municipal water. Nat gas is gone but offset by electricity. My electricity was $100/month and now $200 or so depending on season. In NS, we pay 2nd highest electricity price in the country. Quebec is the cheapest. NSPower is MANDATED to have a 8% profit, so we pay more when they have a bad year. Every $100 we pay, $8 goes to shareholders. We the customers pay for the lean years while shareholders reap 8% .
1. Majority wear their pajamas out and don't work 2. Horrible roads and huge potholes 3. Rents are out of control 4. Small rural towns have no jobs 5. Cost of food is insane
These issues can be found pretty much all over Canada, unfortunately.
I guess they don't have these issues in cultured upper Canada and the US.
A year later, and things have only deteriorated further. Having lived in Vancouver/southern BC coast most of my life, I chose to move first to PEI, and then settled in NS three years ago. My impression of the Maritimes? I happily moved back to BC. It later emerged that I was just one of legions of others who were lured to the Atlantic on the promise of accessible real estate, but found that the overall price for that access was far too exorbitant in every sense of the word. In terms of negative life experiences, it ranks as a clear number one. I had lived in small northern communities in the past, and assumed that life in the Maritimes wouldn’t be too dissimilar. I couldn’t have been more mistaken.
Thanks for putting people off moving here, hopefully it will lower our cost of living...
Whine whine whine. That's all people do.
Go on virtually any tenant/renters siute and read the comments. It will give you an immediate insight into why being a landlord isa something you should avoid.
You live in river John that’s right in the snow belt. One of my good friends lives in scotsburn not far from river John his wife is originally from there. I’m from the east coast they get double or triple the snow there.
Actually I was visiting River John and I have a house in Scotsburn ;) the snow was just the right amount in my opinion.
@@LifeinNovaScotia I was in scotsburn last night for the night lol
I recognise that Starbucks and Lighthouse. 🙂
You must have a bunch of pre filmed vids. I love how you brought it all together, very creative.
You’re the best, very handsome. If only I could grow hair like you, just look at that flow. The accent seems a bit put on though, like you’re not really from Britain but maybe you’re parents are…
I’ll keep praying you wake up looking like Cousin It.

Interesting & well done. Will there be a Q&A session soon? I like Q&A sessions.
Never!
I was looking for this video a long time ago since I watched it last year before I decided to move out of Vancouver. I watched several videos of Nova Scotia, Ottawa, and Montreal to see what life looks like, what costs, and more just to get an idea of where to move. I moved to BC 5 years ago thinking that it would work for me since I came from the second biggest city in my country, but once I got there I realized that a crowded and big city is not my thing anymore. I prefer and love to live in the countryside. When I saw this video I did not save it and I was looking for it cus I was not sure if it was in Ottawa or Nova Scotia, but that I found it. I love the video cus I am an immigrant in Canada 🇨🇦 as well, and I lived in North Carolina a long time ago, I live in Rose Hill, & Wallace beautiful cities too. I would like to see more videos from you guys. You have a new subscriber
Very informative and well done video. Is there any chance of you beginning a channel that will answer all of my questions?🤓
Never!
@@LifeinNovaScotia I will file that as a "maybe".
We know what you have been dealing with and the frustration of the rental payments. It’s sad that we are in a world where some people just cannot be trusted and you are the one losing out. Onwards and upwards Riley! ❤
Shame! I’m so sorry that has happened to you! Maybe, if you are not returning to NS you should just sell it.. advertise it to people moving from BC they’ll pay top dollar lol.. it’ll probably save you in the long run for repairs etc..
CRAZY STUFF 😮 but im so happy u found someone u can trust now to rent your beautiful home, so sad they trashed that beautiful space ! All the best 🙂
im from Nova Scotia about to move to Manitoba for better finances and return one day able to purchase a house like yours, Whats your take ?
Hmm that’s a tough one, I don’t know much about Manitoba and I guess it depends on your job prospects there vs staying in NS. I know of one Nova Scotian who made the move and they seemed to be happy there, until work led them to Ontario. Personally I would miss being by the ocean.
hows it going in the states
Things are going ok, the family are enjoying it. The weather is great, the cost isn’t and every now and then we sit down and ask ourselves if life is better here or in NS… and with no definite answer.
o good to hear.i have my house for sale in Niagara Falls and moving to my property in westbranch just past scotsburn can't wait.that was a great video you did on scotsburn. always enjoy your videos
@@LifeinNovaScotiathere is a definite answer….. 😏 it’s in your name
So so cool 😎 Did you see the northern lights/ aurora borealis ?
Ugh this is a sore point, we had the best chances to see it apparently but only a slight green whisper was in the sky.
You gotta do whats best for your family but i would never move to the USA.
Don’t confuse the GTA with all Ontario🙂
I just moved from Ontario to the Acadian Peninsula and I would sincerely like to thank Nova Scotia for soaking up all the rotten winter weather 😅
2:54 You can't compare renter's insurance to homeowner's insurance. Homeowner's insurance in Ontario may well have been higher than in NS
So glad I found your channel! We moved from the UK in may 2022 to BC.. then we drive across Canada with our U-Haul and we lived in Northern Ontario for a while.. now we live in the Niagara region.. but now we are considering moving somewhere with warmer weather and a lower cost of living.. although Nova Scotia offers great beaches a lower cost of living and house prices it doesn't fix the winters.. we are considering North or South Carolina and Florida.. I would like to ask is your cost of living cheaper now also what about the wildlife in North and South Carolina I've heard they have a lot of snakes and spiders.. having lived in Australia we were glad to leave the creepy crawlies behind lol
Wow it sounds like you guys have had some adventures. I loved NS and it is way more fun than ON in my opinion. (Especially the beaches and the warmer north shore waters.) As for cost of living in North Carolina, it blows my mind how expensive it is here. But the lower taxes balance things out a bit.
@@LifeinNovaScotiathank you for your reply! Would you say Carolina is a cheaper cost of living than Nova Scotia for a family of 4?
I would say it balances out to be about the same. The size of houses are better here, the cost of groceries are slightly cheaper, the utilities are more expensive, medical insurance is expensive (unless it’s part of your salary). We pay $400 a month for gold standard health insurance and my boy spent one night in hospital with a bad allergic reaction and we had to pay an additional $2100. So yeah, it balances out I guess.
@@LifeinNovaScotia omg.. that's not affordable if you are living from paycheck to paycheck! I hope you don't have too many of those hospital trips.. thank you for your reply..
We have Two costcos
So happy to have found your channel! My husband and I are planning to move to NS in October. It truly is a beautiful province. We are looking forward to seeing more of it once we are there full time.
Nova Scotia is tax greedy.. So is New Brunswick and PEI..
Welcome home
I live on the South Shore and winters here are mild, while the waiting list for doctors has grown by a third because of the new arrivals since Covid. That’s life, just like the bugs. They don’t much bother me, but we were taught not to swat or panic; those that do get bitten.
Oh interesting, I’ve never heard of swatting increasing the chances of getting bitten!
I guess you have got your answer from many of the comments. Keep posting, little bro! 👏🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸
Beautiful beautiful place :) Nice to see you posting again, hope u work it out with rental issues 😮 NOT RIGHT !
