Will the McKenzie Method Help My Back Pain? - Apex Ortho - Spine Specialist - North Jersey #backpain
The McKenzie Method is one of the main techniques that Tom uses to help our patients recover from neck or back pain here at Apex. In the video, we walk you through a mock McKenzie evaluation, step by step, with a person experiencing lower back pain.
The McKenzie approach is an excellent natural way to assess your pain before going in for surgery, taking pills, or getting injections. With the right therapist, you should have a much clearer picture of the root cause of your pain or at the very least, a referral or recommendation to see someone who can take the next step with you.
Hopefully, after watching this video, you should have a better understanding of what a McKenzie evaluation involves and feel more confident before you go for you're appointment.

    These exercises also hepled me to fix my problem! Unfortunately my physio also recommend insoles for my shoes...Got splint shins from them...Be careful when it comes to insoles!

    Hang me upside down like a bat. It so painful when I get it and as I'm getting older it's getting worse I had for 7 years on and off my doctor say it's it will go away by itself to go home and rest but I had no tests done or seen a specialist doctor so how can my doctor say it's sciatica for sure

    What do you think of the chin tuck variant where you mostly just tuck the chin in without translating the head back? moving the head back causes pain for me.

      It may help. You may have to do a different direction like side bend or rotation. When the common recommendations don’t work you probably need a evaluation by MDT trained therapist

    Excellent and well explained. I have had intermittent periods of Sciatica from 18 to my current 70 years of age. Sleeping lying down on the affected side has become worse these past few years even though I am active for my age. Any tips please? Many thanks. Henry

      I would start with a physical therapy evaluation. I’m partial to a physical therapist certified in McKenzie method. Also, looking at stress, nutrition and sleep . Hope this helps. If you are close to northern new jersey we could look at you.

    If it degenerative from lack of collagen and you’re over 50 whereby generating collagen is greatly reduced…what does that mean for your senior years ahead and these exercises to stimulate strength and building of collagen but you’re older?

    I've been having pain from the thumb through the neck for the last 7 months brought on by repetitive motion injury at work. One doc thought it was radial styloid tenosynovitis, one thought thoracic outlet syndrome, another ruled that out. Emg came back normal, x-ray was normal for wrist but for cervical spine revealed endplate osteophytes, mild disc space narrowing at c5-c6, and moderately severe uncovertabral arthropathy. Dry needling hasn't helped much, nor has physical therapy. Any suggestions on what it could be or where to go from here?

    I have carpal tunnel syndrome for 17 years, I couldn't even hold a paper & I had a cortisone injection that time, and I feel fine for 13 years till I have a bulging disc on (c5, c6, c7).     I have bucket seat / racing seat in my car , i can not exit the car without damaging my nerve in my left thigh ..... just one trip entering the car and exiting the car makes me sick for 2 weeks and i can not move , how the hell are people supposed to exit a car with bucket seats without getting this nerve damage in the thigh ..... ! the huge side tip of the bucket seat digs right in to the under side of the thigh each time i exit the car : (

    My test says I have very severe CT, nerve pinched in my elbow, and some coming from c 5-6 level. Hands are bad quick but can't have surgery yet because I have a weird lung disease.

    I'm about to start PT for possible IT Band Syndrome. My Dr ordered one month of PT and then an MRI if pain isn't getting better. (Possible meniscus tear. Had prior ACL/meniscus surgery) Hoping this stuff works!

    I've had ulnar nerve decompression without transposition in both arms. Had left hand carpal tunnel surgery this morning, right hand last month. I did get alot of relief, however I have cervical degenerative disc disease advanced osteoarthritis and still have pain down both arms. I'll be getting the anterior discotomy and fusion by end of year. I go in 2 weeks for an endoscopic rhizotomy in my lumbar spine. The neck and back can cause crazy pain in crazy place.

    How does cycling compare to the 2024 fashion of using the sledge for knee rehab? Both push and pull. I work out 4 times a week and not sure if I should just do cycling 4 times a week or mix it up with the sledge. I know the easy answer is to say mix it up but I have tried sledging in the past and didn't notice any benefits from it. I did get hot and sweaty and my legs warm so I guess the benefit was blood flow but not sure if the bike is better bang for buck. Thoughts?

      The thought is the two bands of the ITband are put on tension in different points of range of motion at the knee simulating a slipping or cracking noise.

      It can take 6-8 weeks. You should see changes in degree of pain after 2-3 weeks.
