I wanted to climb Mount baker and Mount Rainer , and I do a lot of elevation day hikes on the weekends . My knee was sore from working on my knees at work and it triggered an old injury so I thought I would go to the walk in for a X-ray. Of course they found nothing so they referred me to a MRI . I did my MRI and found out I had a tear on both sides of my meniscus, tear on my ACL and advanced cartridge loss . I stopped hiking and started focusing more on work . I’m supposed to get surgery in September and I’m hoping I can get back on the horse and to even stay with my company without being a liability.

I hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and it's all rocky. I use trekking poles but my knees still hurt. How do you descend rocky trails? What I have found, last week was a great example, I will back down a section with large rocks or even side step to put pressure on different parts of my knees.

Occasionally I will go down backwards depending on terrain. Do you do any lower body strengthening exercises? It can help a great deal.

@@apexmovebetter I do not. That's part of my plan is to find exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee to add more support but I don't know what exercises are best.

@@PaulsWanderings I would say starting with basic bodyweight squats and Bulgarian/split squats is a good start 3 x 10 reps 2 x week with 2 days of rest in between.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the confirmation. My last hike, I had no pain, which is a little unbelievable as it was a tough one with lots of rock scrambles that would have been very jarring on my knees but I went down the worst parts side stepping or backing down so the stress was put on different parts of the joint.
