How to Build a Rock-Solid Shed Ramp (Riding Mower Approved ✅)
So I needed to build a shed ramp for my riding mower. I will show you how to build a shed ramp out of treated wood using a wedge stringer design instead of the more common ledger board design most people use for shed ramps.
Building a strong shed ramp strong enough for a riding mower is fairly simple and can be done in an afternoon.
Chapters:

0:34 Ramp Build Design Considerations
0:48 What's a Ledger Board?
1:14 Building the Shed Ramp Frame
3:24 Gravel Base for Shed Ramp
4:14 Dealing with Obstructions
5:42 Adding Optional Blocking
6:00 Adding Deck Boards to Shed Ramp
7:39 Ramp Final Thoughts
Shed Ramp Tools & Materials:
Circular Saw (Miter Saw Optional)
Power Drill
Speed Square
Tape Measure
Pencil
2" / 3" Deck Screws
Deck Boards
Appropriate Dimensional Lumber
Crushed Stone
For my build, I used 2 - 3" deck screws, 3/4 inch treated deck boards and a treated 2x6. You're needs in materials may vary by the height of your shed, how your shed is built and the terrain and space available to you surrounding your shed.

great video. Tried the extractor screws. In the end i managed to remove really tight screws by drilling into the screw in reverse, till it removed it. Perfect
Which method would work best for using a hammer drill on a concrete wall? I need perfectly straight holes to hang a wood rack on my garage wall.
I'd probably try to make a jig out of a 2x4 with straight holes spaced as needed for your wood rack to act as a drill block/guide. I'd also anchor the jig to the concrete with tap cons temporarily. That's the only thing I can think of that might keep you honest with a hammer drill.
@@DIYWithAaron Thank you!! I appreciate the response!
I was going to make a floating shelf out of a 1 inch board and I needed to drill on the thickness of the board so this is what I did to make my whole straight I got a another piece of board and cut out A straight piece and made it 1 and 1/2 in in width 6 in in length after drilling the straight hole into the middle of the thickness of the wood I then glued a piece of wood on top that was 1 in thick 6in log 6 in width top and bottom so that it slides it looks like a c-channel like a letter C if you look on the side of it and that slides into the board because the one and a half inches will guide your drill bit nice and straight and Improvement to the idea you could add a piece of pipe so that you don't mess up the hole that's made out of wood since the drill could go sideways a little and then make the whole crooked so that's why you would put a piece of pipe but since I had steady hands I just did it this way I didn't feel like doing extra work with the pipe plus I didn't have a tool to cut the pipe ended up not using that wood cuz it was too heavy so I ended up using quarter of an inch plywood some high density spray foam and I just put a hole using some Square Dill rods to create the holes that the pipe with or the spike or whatever you call it that goes through the holes to hold it up and I glue those in there where all the holes needed to be at and the rest I just sprayed it was pray foam to keep the spray foam from bending the wood I just made another floating shelf out of thicker wood and then that would fit inside that that's keeping from warping it and that's how I did it and then I just shaved off a chunk with an utility knife those ones that you can pull it out more and more blade a light weight strong making a lightweight floating shelf i did not needit to hold heavy thing it worked out fin
I didn't quite follow your entire description of what you did, but I think I got the gist. I'm glad it worked out for you.
Get s small plastic mirror, drill a hole into it and use the mirror effect as a guide. you almost always will get within 1-2 degree accuracy depending how slow you go. then i see you CD Method.
Great tutorial! Great tips and you hit on a bunch of “basic” things for guys like me who stink around the house.
Very clear and helpful!!! Thanks a lot!!
Have you ever tried accessing the Transmission pulley in back without dropping the transmission? The pulley teeth eventually wear down. I think that's what happen to mine after 300 hrs.
Haven't got to that point yet. You have more hours than I do.
Great video! About to hang mine and you saved me some headaches. 😃
This is the most UNDERRATED swingset build video on CZcams. Thanks for the gusset idea!
Oh my…Aaron you look just like my oldest son…He is the one who works on my tractor since my husband passed…Your video will help him so much….Thank you for such a great video…
Thank you for this guide. It was exactly what I needed.
what if the screw is in plastics? eg. a toy blaster where the screw has stripped. not wood? I am afraid the drill will crack the plastics
Yeah, your instincts are probably right.... a drill might not be a good idea for plastic. You can use hand tools with the extractor. Something like a t-handle wrench might allow you to use the extractor to keep some pressure on the screw while turning, but you'll have to be careful not to push to hard. You got a real challenge on your hands.
@@DIYWithAaron 😢 yeah, the screw is also not on the outside. the screw head is 1 cm inside, there's plastic screw hole around it so can't work on the head from outside. thx for the tip. i read can use t-handle wrench by adding rubber band or paper and press on it.
Omg thank you From 5000 hours of standing in the store looking for an employee that will not even know what I'm talking about. I really appreciate it thank you
IMO never use a drill on an extractor. a hammer and vice grips. with wood you can get away with it but with metal, NEVER use a drill.
I don't usually work with metal as much. More of a wood guy so I'll defer to you on the metal. I've always done okay with a drill/extractor combo with wood.
I always give credit and show love where it is due. I would feel bad not to comment when you helped me and taught me something new thank you so much for your time tou took out to help others!!! ❤
Thank you for making this as straightforward as possible
I have the S220 and just did an oil change. Mine has an added hose about 10” long attached to the drain plug. So much easier to be able to get a pan under for drainage
I just looked up your drain plug assembly on the S220. Wow, I'm jealous of how easy that is with the hose.
Thank you for your quick and precise intro. Love the string, which worked perfect for me! Good job!
genius!
Where is the material list needed?
Look in the description of the video.
So much more helpful than other videos. Clear, quick and to the point. Thank you
what kind of wood do you use ? and how does it hold up to outside conditions (i.e. rain and snow)
Pressure treated, ground-contact rated Southern Yellow Pine. Should last for at least a decade (Northeast weather). Paint or stain it after it dries out in the sun for a few weeks if you want to make it last longer. All materials I used are in the description of the video if you want to use it for reference.
Just tried this and is shuts off after I unhook the cables. X2 time doing it let it sit for 10 minutes and shut off 2 minutes after undoing the cables again
John Deere 212 1983 year
I'd be looking at either the battery or maybe the alternator for issues in that case.
didnt work at all. cant get a deep enough hole.
Sorry to hear that. Check to see if you have a regular or reverse bit by comparing the one your using to a regular bit. If it is a regular bit, then run the drill in the forward. If your bit is dull try a different bit. Screw extractors often require a bit of patience since they don't always work the first time... and there are times they just don't seem to work at all. Nature of the beast.
i have another extractor , it wsa not working earlier then i tried with different sizes as you explained and i was able to extract the stripped screw..
Excellent info thanks
Why did you use the drill bit (first part) in reverse? That doesn't seem right...
In case it grabs you don’t want to further tighten the issue…
Many extractor sets come with a reverse drill bit threaded in the opposite direction so that it drills in the reverse setting. This way if it grabs the screw/bolt the bit rotates the fastener out instead of tightening it further. But I did make an error in my video... I was always under the assumption all extractor sets came with a reverse drill bit. However, a viewer noticed and commented that the set I was using in the video actually came with a regular bit that should have been used in the regular forward drive. I don't know why a manufacturer would include a regular bit since a reverse drill bit would be far better in my opinion (since it reduces the risk of exasperating the problem by digging the fastener in further). If you have the option, I'd suggest using a set with a reverse drill bit and extractor combination.
My cables arent split enough to connect the ground to a bolt on the engine block. Can i connect it to a bolt on the back side of the frame under the battery by the wheels?
Sounds like it would probably be okay.
Some day I will build one of that for my grand kids. Thanks man!
I went with a harbor freight set using them to remove some stripped Allen bolts on my wheel adapters and after the second use that sucker snapped right in half.l
Ouch. Unfortunately... sometimes you get what you pay for.
Excellent and well researched advice. Comprehensively explained in clear concise language. Many thanks! 🙏🏼
Could I jump-start my John Deere with a Tactlife T8 jump starter, the same one I use to jump-start my Toyota Camry? Thank you.
Should work.
Thank you for the screwdriver idea! The newer models appear to have an even stronger spring
Thank you very good job
This was truly a nice video bro great job I am working on a bolt that's stuck on the rotor and I just wanted to make sure I was on the same page prior Thanks again
Will this approach work if the screw head is completely chip off?
Only if you have enough material to actually use a screw extractor on.
Thank you, DIY straight to the point is always best. Keep up the good work kid.
Great info, thanks
You saved me a whole weekend trying to figure this out so much gratitude Aaron! I will be following your channel for a long time!
Craftsman has changed. The use made stuff is legendary. The Chinese made stuff is garbage. The Taiwanese made stuff is very good. Most of the Sears owned stuff had a life time warranty, even the Chinese made garbage.
Totally agree. As for warranty, I don't think there are any Sears stores anywhere near me. Haven't seen one in years.
Thanks man! High value, straight to the point
Sweet have a sears set hahaha 😆
Thank you!!
Thanks
thanks for the great video - do I need to change my oil filter every season? I don't do 100 hours
The manufacturer recommends an oil and filter change at least once per year regardless of hours. That's what I follow.
@@DIYWithAaronthanks
You don’t need to drill the hole in counter clockwise. Only screw extractor needs to be counter rotated.
Yeah, you're right. I thought all extractors came with reverse drill bits. Apparently, that's not the case. So I guess drill whatever way your drill bits are oriented for.
How do you keep the spindle from spinning while on tightening or tightening
I just held the spindle in place with one hand while tightening with the other.
Spindle nuts left loosen rite tightening??
