​@@rejoicemercy6151 And there's the seething when someone points out that the macguffin was a veneer to justify the fan service. I like the show too, it's probably one of my favorites, but I find it amusing when some try to inject these silly high-minded themes where none exist.

@@firebug3256 Interesting but i mean the show DOES have themes in it? Taking down fascist powers, cutting off family ties and finding your own family…like its not just limited to fanservice at the end of the day. Literally, the biggest message of the show is “Clothing = Containment” or Imprisonment to the system, it’s juxtaposed alongside “Nudity = Freedom from control” which is why at the end of the show, everyone is together in nudity. Yes its probably justifying some of the animator’s weird fetishes or whatever but its done in good taste that isn’t overly provocative at the end of the day. YES we’re shown a lotta crack n coconuts but nudity doesn’t always have to be overtly sexual. Most scenes of the show (later on especially) are attached with moods of seriousness and aren’t meant to be taken as a “just fanservice”.

@@rejoicemercy6151 Sure, but I'm talking about where you mention the anime criticizing fan service. That seems like a stretch especially considering Trigger's other animations. I think I have almost the opposite perspective of the anime's message. To me it seems to be a tribute to fan service and praising it more than anything - making it central to the plot.

Well to be fair Mako is and always was the love interest. They did not make her an icky love interest and that's what makes her so great.

@@bakapotato5327 idk, I’ve watched the series several times and Mako just doesn’t seem like the love interest type to me for Ryuko. If you ship em then that’s cool as I can totally see it. But Mako’s misguided tirade about Ryuko only getting naked for her one true love (Senketsu) in episode 17 kinda made me feel like she wasn’t into Ryuko in that way. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t ship Ryuko with Senketsu as that scene has Ryuko blatantly stating that Mako is misinterpreting the situation and the scene is more about two friends trying to calm Ryuko and get her to put on her uniform again so she can fight Ragyo etc. (as they’re all seen jovially messing around afterward when Ryuko realises what they were both REALLY saying to her). I’d say the same to people who think Senketsu is Ryuko’s love interest (because that is NOT the point of their relationship at all, their love is platonic but it is the closest, most intimate form of love two people can share without the complication of romance ruining it, and I adore their evolving friendship and potential kinship). there are multiple instances that push both Mako AND Senketsu as her most important companions in several scenes. Neither are her love interest but both are her best friends, Soulmates (non romantically) and family bound by blood but not related. Senketsu is the last link to her past (her old family), Mako is the best prospect of her future (her new family). To dismiss one in favour of the other is disingenuous to Ryuko’s character, because Ryuko herself says that Senketsu and Mako are BOTH beyond friends, but she doesn’t know what to call it, if she did then she’d outright say she loves one like a brother/sister and the other like a boyfriend/girlfriend, Ryuko isn’t one to beat around the bush or hide what she thinks. She loves them both so much that it can’t be put into a romance box or a familial box because that’s not the point, it can’t be explained. A platonic love between two people is a difficult thing to explain. That’s how I read KLK anyway. There’s no time for romance when friendship comes first (call it cheesy if you want). The creator of KLK himself even says that is what the show is about, a form of intimacy that transcends love and species: friendship. Anyway, thanks for your patience if you read all this.

@@drfabulous2804I loved how you phrase it and said it without basically offending anyone. I would’ve also said the same if I had the patience and intelligence to spare on some. Meanwhile, me still holding onto my Ryuko and Satsuki ship before I knew they were sisters 😭

@@nuclearcracker if you ship em then that is fine, you’ll get no judgement from me. But Kill La Kill has a hell of a lot more depth than I think people realise. Mako (and people like Mako) are definitely the key to Ryuko’s happy future. I also make a parallel to Senketsu being as significant as Ryuko’s wedding dress, he (as a sailor uniform) is an outfit that is so special and significant to Ryuko at that point in her life, but the point of a wedding dress and school uniform is that it is meant to be outgrown and left behind as people move on with their lives, Senketsu’s death signifies that Ryuko should move onto the next chapter of her life without him, but she should cherish the memories she had wearing him, because of how special their time together was and how wearing him made her feel. It’s icky friendship love at its best, there may be a bit of romanticism in the subtext but personally I think that is all it is, as peoples’ favourite/significant clothes are remembered fondly that way. But in the overall nature of Ryuko’s relationship with Senketsu, I’d say they were platonic soulmates.
