After snorkelling the south-west coast of Victoria, Australia over many years it became apparent to me that the fish stocks of inshore reef fish are depleted compared to what they once were. Even my own spearfishing experience has taught me that if you kill the fish life it is not necessarily there again when you return. Many times, I returned to a site only to find a barren seascape with no fish or very few flighty fish.
So, I burnt my speargun and took up underwater photography which is actually harder than spearfishing. You must hold your breath longer and seek out areas and marine life that once went unnoticed. You must also remain still to gain the trust of the fish life (hopefully they are there when you return).
I came across a new site which turned out to be a fish nursery area which is the focus of this video. These types of areas are few and far between and should be recognized and receive protection, particularly as most of the fish are juveniles. This site is undoubtedly very important for replenishment of nearby reefs and should be part of Victoria's system of Marine Parks.
