Bosch PBD 40 bench drill problems
After many years of use, a few days ago I decided to buy a new drill press / bench drill. It will not be a Bosch PBD 40 once again, and in this short video I will explain why not. Anyway, I was happy with this machine, it served me well during all the years, but now it is time for an upgrade through changing the machine itself.
The main reason for letting this machine go is the drill head wobble. After all the years this machine was on the market, I had mine for about 10 years, this simple issue is still not fixed. Every one I checked in every store in several countries has the same issue. It could be easily fixed if Bosch would change the rack to a bit wider one or at least would add some set screws to tighten and adjust the wobble. It's a shame because I really like this machine.

    I hope you can help. I tried you method of chuck removal, but the locking mechanism seems to have broken and now when i exert force on the chuck with the Allen key it just opens the chuck so that the Allen key falls out. Any ideas?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera Před 29 dny

      I am sorry for the problem you experience. Maybe the locking mechanism is not really broken, so try rotating the Allen key slightly so that all three jaws get a good grip of the Allen key surfaces and then try to lock it again. If it clicks then you are good, but if not then your only option is to use some sort of special tool made for chuck removal. There are two holes on the top of the chuck, above the red locking ring, so if you insert two pins into those then you should be able to twist and remove the chuck. If that doesn't help then you could get an adjustable pipe wrench with rounded jaws, put some soft metal (aluminium or cuper) sheets between the jaws and the chuck and lock it on the top ring, above the red locking ring. That should definitely do the job. Just be careful, the chuck gets easily damaged if you are not using some soft metal sheets between the wrench and the chuck. At the same time, you must tighten it hard enough so that the wrench is not slipping. Good luck, I hope you will be able the remove the chuck, especially if the locking mechanism is really broken.

      @AdaptingCamera Před měsícem

      This board is pressure sensitive, it does not recognize and identify the pieces. You place them on the board and just press start and the computer starts. The computer assumes you placed the pieces right and then every time you move one, you must apply a slight pressure to indicate from and to movement. You can place the pieces before you turn it on, or after. It doesn't matter.

    can you remove the white border?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera Před 2 měsíci

      No. If you look at a CD/DVD you can see that the edges are always blank, not printed on. That is always the case even for factory made CD/DVD. If you want, you can print borderless on CD/DVD labels, but then you need to use a different software which lets you select different label type paper and you select the label type of your favourite. The CD printer of the ET8550 is intended for printing directly on CD/DVD. The drawback is that you need to use special CD/DVD with a printable surface. If you don't have those you can mount the label on the CD/DVD and insert it into the CD tray and fool the printer to believe you have a printable CD, but in that case the printer handles it as a CD/DVD, not as a paper, so it will not print borderless.

      Cool. I like building things which are out of the ordinary, have designed and built my CNC mill, CNC lathe, 3D printer and several other things. Anyway, regarding the car, I have no idea about the Taycan, but I would prefer the M50. I simply like the look of the i4 more than the Porsche. Winter driving is absolutely no problem, not even with the eDrive40 I have. All you need is good winter tires, not all season, but real winter tires and driving skills, but those are needed regardless of car. Anyway, good luck with your new car, regardless which one you end up with.

      @@Chazaxl Nice to hear from you. Hope you are doing well. I am not that active on the MyCNCUK forum, mainly because it is too slow, but also because I am on many other forums as well, and time i limited. Anyway, I can warmly recommend buying an EV. This is our second. The first one was a Leaf which my wife bought in 2019. That car is gone now, and she has a Kia EV6 now. So we are electrified forever. I love driving EV and will never buy an ICE again. Just came back from a long trip in Sweden (I live in Sweden) and will be off to Hungary early May for the longest trip with this car. Last year I went to Switzerland with it, which was the maiden journey for this car. I enjoy every minute in the car. Regarding AWD or RWD, I have never had an AWD car but had many FWD or RWD. No problems driving in snow with the proper tyres if you take it easy and have winter tyres. Of course, AWD is even better for winter, but even those require winter tyres. The disadvantage of AWD is the higher weight and higher consumption. I end up with my car almost exactly on the WLTP range with my summer tyres, even though I drive fast wherever it is allowed and using the AC / heater to keep a nice comfortable temperature in the car. As I said, I can't say anything about the Porsche other than checked online today. I still don't like it, mainly the interior, but also other things in the car. But that's just my taste. I also think it is more like a single person's car, not suitable for couples, unless travelling very light. Seems like the storage space is not very practical and also the boot hatch is too tiny for my preference, similar to my 330e had. A tiny hatch everything must be pushed through. The i4 is much more practical for couples, or families. If you have a dog then the Porsche is out of the question. I don't have a dog, but just came back from a longer trip, which required more luggage than usual (hiking in the Swedish wilderness) and that sort of trip is not possible with the Taycan, unless I would use the rear seat for luggage as well. Anyway, the Taycan is outside my budget. Configured a car to my taste regarding colour and functions, similar to my i4, and ended up in a price which is almost twice the price of my i4.

    Great video thank you, unfortunately it would seem that Roehm, or at least the retailers, have caught onto it's fame amongst pd40 owners because the price for this specific chuck seems to have sky rocketed since you made this video in order to cash in on us. or maybe the issue is geographical but I doubt it, it's almost half the price of a new PBD40 now which I can't justify. This is leading me to think of other possibilities, I've always been happy with the chuck on my Makita heavy drills and i do have a spare one I don't use, I'm thinking perhaps I can take the chuck from the Makita and fit it to the Bosch, providing it will mate up to it which I have no idea. Another thing I've noticed is this is the same chuck that comes with the Makita 12v brushless drill, which Since new has had a terrible amount of run out and I've always hated it, imagine my surprise when I realised it's the same heap of crap on the Bosch. I have done the bearing mod, and it helped by about half, maybe. I was expecting little to no run out based on peoples feedback/opinions so I was disappointed to still see some runout, albeit reduced, I think the next thing to do will be to stop the whole head from deviating left or right a few mm's when lowering it to the work piece as sometimes it doesn't even touch down where the laser is or where my hole was punched, simply because the head is wafting around. Frustrating.

      i have done a lot of massive research because i wanted to buy a printer with the very best quality of image, and i had doubts about this issue, what is best shades of grays, or shades of colors, there is a brother printer series with 10 to 12 colors but the dpi is up to 600 or 1200 depending the model @@AdaptingCamera maybe there is such thing as a ET8550 with photo black and gray ink, maybe depends of the region/country 🤷‍♂

      i think you are right and i'm wrong by a misplaced number, only the Epson EcoTank L8050 have those Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Grey but either L805 and L8550 are like you said @@AdaptingCamera

    I wanted to change my chuck but it would not come out in any way. I used so much force that I ruined the original chuck and it still doesn’t come out😢. I don’t know what to do. Now I can’t use the drill because it’s damaged and the chuck won’t come out so I can install the new one🙁

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera Před 5 měsíci

      I am very sorry to read this. I don't know how exactly this can happen, unless if you made a mistake and twisted the chuck the wrong way. Yes, the chuck is very difficult to remove but if it is done according to my video, I don't think it can be damaged unless you use a mallet or try to twist it the wrong way, or not holding the chuck tight enough and it turns while you try to remove it. Anyway, I am sorry and hope you can fix it somehow.

    • @JoaoAlvesCarlos
      @JoaoAlvesCarlos Před 5 měsíci

      @@AdaptingCamera I twisted it the right way, that is to the left. What I wasn’t able to do correctly was fixing the Allen key to the chuck. It always came lose when I started twisting it. Then I tried to hold it with a big plumber wrench I have and that was the moment I broke the chuck. I gave up because it would not come out in any way. I came back later and used that wrench again willing to break the chuck in pieces if it need be because it was broken anyway. That was what actually happened, the lower part of the chuck came out in pieces and when I could grab the inner part I was finally able to unscrew the chuck. It seems the drill is running fine.

      @@JoaoAlvesCarlos Good to know that the machine is fine. I guess that the Allen key was not properly inserted if you could not get the chuck to grip it. Anyway, it's bad luck, but since you wanted to change the chuck anyway, and the original chuck is really poor quality it's not a huge loss.

    If we set the E0.01 function at value 0 the inverter can't receive the signal from the control board outside right ? Because I have a problem with the connection between the control board and the inverter. How can I check the function ?

    Excellent content. Bosch should employ ppl like you to test their products and advise improvements. Can’t believe they skim money on critical components of their machines.

      Yes, as it is shown here: czcams.com/video/NKZBIqMDUL8/video.htmlfeature=shared&t=290 that's normal, but if the red starts blinking then you have a problem.

    Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent video. After finding the same short-comings in the original chuck Bosch supplied with this machine (in metalwork) I have decided to order the Rohm 871050 shown here. I hope I am able to use your video during my install to good effect and will update this comment to report back when I do. Much appreciated! 👍
