Did My No Dig Potatoes Produce Through the Drought?
Summer 2022 was very very dry, and potatoes are a notoriously thirsty crop. So just how did my no dig potatoes fare in this weather? Will there be spuds for dinner this autumn? Will I do no dig potatoes again?
Hi I'm Ru and I make videos about getting messy with organic gardening, natural crafts, days out, and more. My channel is as much a scrapbook as it is a record of what I've been up to! Check out my other videos to learn more about what I've been doing and how I've changed my garden from a weedy wasteland into a weedy wasteland with chickens.

    Pretty good results. Reminds me of my wife's grandma "aquiring" plants and trees at the local nursey. Like "oops" did that bit of limb accidently fall in my bag 🙂. I am just getting into grafting. I wonder if you would have redid, as in made new cuts on the grafts that fell apart. I mean the root stocks all took, that half is established, just needed a 2nd attempt at the graft. I share your observations on grafting tape. Maybe where I have experience as an electrician, but electrical tape seems like it can do the same job, Lord knows I have used that tape as a bandage to graft my own broken skin too many times to count, sure it can hold two sticks together, thats what that tape does is pulls tighter with its elastic traits and stays tight with its gooey traits, plus keeps out bugs and water.

      Yes, 2 of them survived well in pots. A couple of others had graft fails, and some were destroyed when a neighbour took down a fence. 2 of my Bramley apple grafts worked too.

    I also bought off Ebay - 65 bulbs and I paid £16. I have planted them today under the shade (under my Bay tree). I am really hopeful that they get established... How are yours now after 3 years?

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade Před měsícem

      The one that's near our fire pit patio has done well and started spreading, despite being badly trampled a few times. The ones around the apple tree have not done so well- they have strong competition from bluebells. But I know it is there because I could smell it while working in that area

    Why do you need to use sand? Why not just use some topsoil? Genuine question cos I wanna put some in my garden.

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade Před 2 měsíci

      The sand helps with levelling, without becoming compacted, and keep its volume when wet or dry. Topsoil will expand or shrink depending on how wet it is, will become compacted over time, and could make a clay pan underneath that traps water. So eventually you'd have a wobbly stone with a puddle underneath it, that squelches out when trodden on. At least that's my understanding. Thanks for the question!

      I just put my stepping stones on soil, the lawn is on a slight slope. They've been there for 14 years and are perfectly stable. You just have to get it right first time, make sure the soil is flattened and even so there is no wobble. This year, I am going to raise them as over time the rain has managed to make them sink but it did take 14 years! This is my lawn... smallscalegardens.blogspot.com/2023/07/easy-way-to-have-nice-lawn.html

    • @Rumade

      You need to do it while the tree is still dormant but the sap has begun to rise. So if you see new leaf/flower buds forming, but they haven't opened yet, that's the best time

    Pillaging? What do you think our hunter gatherer ancestors did? Just walk past wild edibles and say hay, let's have pizza tonight, as long as you only take a small amount from a patch there is no harm done.

    I practice Native American witchcraft/spirituality. In my tradition, the elder wood can not be harvested or burned for it is sacred to the divine... Wakan Tanka.... great spirit. However a piece you found is considered a gift from Wakan Tanka. You thank the tree by leaving corn meal and it makes your magic more powerful because Wakan Tanka blesses your intention if it is for your betterment as well as beneficial to your people.

    Your stones with the sand borders look the best of all the other videos. You are very good at this! I actually paid a landscaper to put in my pavers and he didn't use a base of sand or gravel. Three years later, they are sinking into the ground and ruining my landscape. I have to weed wack around them to be seen...what a job ahead to pull each one out and level it and use sand or gravel. 😢😢

    • @Rumade
