Cirrhilabrus punctatus Fiji 2000
This is the Fijian variety of Cirrhilabrus punctatus. These fish do not appear red underwater unless illuminated with a strobe or bright video light. In natural light they appear more like pale brown.
The original video was shot in SD480. This has been upscaled with Topaz Video AI to HD 1080.

Whale sharks & snappers spawning Belize 2003
zhlédnutí 54Před 14 dny
This old SD-480 video didn’t upscale to 1080 quite as well as some others but it’s still very interesting. I am not giving the exact location because it’s never a good idea to post locations of fish spawning aggregations, even though this one is probably well-known. I’m also not mentioning who the divers are, since I haven’t asked their permission. The whale sharks visit this area when the snap...

An old silent movie shot on Super-8 film 46 years ago by Mike deGruy and me. Packing a Kodak movie camera and an Ikelite housing, we set out to document our first attempt at tagging a Chambered Nautilus with a transmitter. Our trip was sponsored by Nixon Griffis, a patron of the New York Aquarium. In appreciation for his generosity, we later named the angelfish Apolemichthys griffisi, in his ho...

Another fish-gem rescued from the 480 dustbin and upscaled to 1080 with Topaz. In 2003 at Mbili Island in the Solomons, Marj and I found this beautiful blue and orange grouper. This is the juvenile Masked Grouper, Gracila albimaculata. For whatever reason, these colorful juveniles are not often observed, and clearly they are very skittish. Rabaulichthys cf altipinnis. This isn't the best video (to say the least) but it may be the only video of this fish in the wild. I happened upon it at the bottom of a sandy slope at 87' at Wickham Island in New Georgia, Solomon Islands. This was back in 2003 with the old Sony VX1000 standard def. camera. I upscaled it to 1080 using Topaz which helps a bit. Otherwise, the fish folk in the group ...

Sunday, June 4, 1972, Fiji at Kadavu, Mike Gawel and I made a dive on the north side of Herald Passage on the Great Astrolabe barrier reef. I spotted a brilliant red hawkfish in shallow water and had no idea what it was. In 1972 this fish was not known in the aquarium world. I contacted Jack Randall who identified it as Neocirrhites armatus, now known as the Flame Hawkfish. I caught one and bro...

I totally fan girled over the cuttlefish when they made their appearance! Major cephalopod groupie here! 🥰
I'm having a guess from their swimming patterns that they are eating plankton from the water column?
Yes
Very cool. Keep the fairy wrasse videos coming!
Thanks! Will do!
i have a newfound appreciation for this craft now.
r gobis and jawfish related because the head looks like a jawfish head?
This is a goby not a jawfish.
Wow, so cool!
Just watched a short on these birds. I had no idea they existed till now. Very interesting that they don’t build a nest.
Such a beautiful creature ! Love to watch them in the wild when I see them from time to time !!!! Love the country life !!!!
Lovely!
Even if I knew you guys back then, my mom wouldn't let me go to that excursion cause I was only 7. LOL! But if I could, I would be there 100%!!! I remember the hair style, those diving masks of that time and I love the Aquarium's shirt in the video. I'm so proud of you and all you achieved! So glad you are sharing such amazing content! Life is too short to learn all we want. Mahalo!
So important to show people how the reef can get in that "calm mode" and not always like a washing machine. To implement trying to represent that in public or private aquariums is something many should consider. Just can't get tired of videos like this. The real deal! Thanks for sharing!! 🙏
Thanks as always Alex for your comments. Glad you enjoyed watching it.
Crazy how calm it is
Love the sailfin on that male. Thanks for posting. Cheers, Chris
EPIC FOOTAGE
Bruce - These videos mean so much to all of us in the aquarium world. Thank you for documenting these wonderful times!
Best time of my life working with the best aquarium people in this world! The WA was the pioneer in many aspects! I knew I was living the gold times back then! Serious work with serious results! A great example to be followed! Amazing video!
Great time, great people (including you !) and great to reminisce about that "golden era" when we all accomplished good things
@@Exallias1 I was fortunate to have the opportunity and to be trusted by you and the whole staff. Thank you so much, Dr. Bruce! I'll never forget your example as a director. I wish I had the opportunity to continue caring your torch. I'm not afraid to say that my dream was to become the director one day and carry your legacy, with that line of thought and knowledge. This longer version is one of the trophies we carry. Time runs fast! Once more, thank you so much for all you did and still do. 🙏
Those are the largest Tridacna clams i've ever seen!
They don’t mess around over there with their tridacna’s
Sadly, the Aquarium lost all of those old large giant clams. They were the oldest and largest in any aquarium in the world at the time. The last big one was nearly 50 years old when it died.
@@Exallias1 Such a bummer, I think they usually pass away in captivity due to some bacterial or viral infection. One of my crocea’s I have had for 4 years died a week or two ago, it had a little pinched mantle and the next two days, it was just empty shell when I checked on it. So sad.
@@BIG-ES- who knows why they died at the Waikiki Aquarium after so many decades, but they have had significant turn-over of employees taking care of those animals.
More, longer, please & thank you.
Pomacanthus xanthometopon is the ultimate fish! The most beautiful in many ways! Too bad it grows so much in a short period of time and I would need a really big tank to keep one as I should. Angels are just amazing and very special! It would probably eat all my zoanthids in no time, so... not in my current tank. LOL! Maybe one day in a 300 gallon fish only tank... 🤑 I almost got a juvenile one time. That's how much I love that fish! The Heniochus is also amazing!! Both fishes look really relaxed in this video. A good example to all of us humans as for how life should be. Lovely! Precious images as always. Mahalo for posting!
Thanks as always Alex!
Beautiful animals!
What a great snorkel…
I think the aquarium fishing bans here in Hawai'i are too harsh. A better solution would've been to limit aquarium collecting to certain areas and limit the amount of fish captured. Banning the fishery as a whole is too harsh. I'm hoping that the bans are lifted soon. I'm totally fine with aquarium fishing as long as it's regulated. Also, a lot of anti-aquarium sentiment is made up by PETA, the same organization that said "milk causes autism" and "meat farms are like the Holocaust." Why are people still listening to PETA when they're such a problematic organization? Also also, I'm hoping that the people featured in the documentary are doing well, especially after their jobs were taken from them.
Great Video! still looks great at Standard Def
AARGH! Extraordinary images!! A precious Hawaiian fish in a very special place!
WOW, they are stunning. I don't know who has the cooler coloration, the male or female! Those are honestly the prettiest Anthias I have seen. Odontanthias borbonius got nothing on the Compsanthias hawaiiensis in my opinion! I wouldn't worry too much about the video artifacts, I think its still a fantastic video.
Thanks but you should see its congener, C. ventralis from other areas of the Pacific. It is even more spectacular. Unfortunately, I don't have video of that species
@@Exallias1 Holy cow, the Ventralis definitely takes the cake. I am used to my little female lyretail, so these guys absolutely take my breath away. Maybe I will follow after you and go dive and get some footage of them
@@Exallias1 Best bit about Ventralis is how wide the variation is between bioregions.
Awesome!
Thanks Bruce and Marj! Almost….almost as good as being there.

That's probably Pocillopora eydouxi (P. grandis)? This video is very special! It shows the high vitality of this reef. So many fish in one coral! Amazing!!! AARGH! So nice!! Thanks for sharing!!
Yes, the name has been changed from Pocillopora eydouxi to Pocillopora grandis. Thanks for the comments!
@@Exallias1 Thank you for publishing such great images! 🙏
Wow Bruce! That is an amazing story behind such a stunning fish. I have always wanted to keep a flame hawk but havent had the chance. I was close to buying an arc eye hawk but didnt due to them growing to such a large size. I am really wanting to get a flame hawk now for my 30 gallon mangrove tank. Bruce, what was that larger spotted looking hawkfish about halfway through the video? Very beautiful fish too
The other hawkfish is Paracirrhites forsteri, and the smaller one is a juvenile of that same species.
@@Exallias1 Very cool, I will look them up. These are great videos. I’m glad you have been posting them for us to see
🤙
Beautiful.
Great Camera work.
Got'a love the Hamlets! Cheers, Chris
😯👍 Lovely! How can we not simply love this video!?
Thank you very much Alex!
Does this fish also go by the name of black and gold chromis? looks just like one! Do oyu know if they are aggressive like damsels or is this just undersea footage?
Yes, it is mistakenly referred to as the "Black & Gold Chromis" but it is in the genus Neoglyphidodon not Chromis, so the aquarium common name is a misnomer of sorts. I have never kept this species in an aquarium so I can't advise you on how aggressive it is. But be sure you notice in this video how large (and drab) they get as adults. I would not recommend them for most aquariums just on the basis of their size as they get older.
Be sure to read the comment from @rogerthat below, who mentions that it is aggressive in an aquarium
Cool video! Beautiful image!
Love the orange spotted filefish!
Gorgeous fish. Thanks for posting, Bruce! They must be closely related to C. ryukyuensis.
Sweet.
Amazing fish! Love wrasses!!!
Thanks for posting, Bruce. I’m a huge fairy and flasher fan!😂😉
I have one more species on video - working on it now
@@Exallias1 Bring it on! Thanks.
Amazing!
Great, healthy reef….thanks Bruce and Marj!
I've tried to find words for this video... it's just the real deal! Do you happen to know the species of that blue staghorn and the flat green table around 0:56? Lots of light! Great coverage and uniform growth! I was late for the "like" this time... #3. Thanks for sharing. This short video completed the great day I had. Hope you're both doing great! Aloha. 🙏
Very glad to hear this place recovered so well!
Thank you for this beautiful video! I'm going to try to mimic this habitat for my ecosphere shrimp. 🦐✨
The nautilus has always been fascinating to me! I had a lovely shell of one for many years but unfortunately it got broken,i saved the pieces in a jar with seaglass!😊😊😊
Great video indeed! What species is found in the Solomons?
Still uncertain which is why we collected samples for DNA testing
How likely is it that they are the same species found in the Philippines?
Tried to imitate their tune and talk to them ,they talked back to me ! They kept going until I laughed so much that could not go on talking to them anymore.( After talking back and forth between that cardinal bird and me for quite a while). To my surprise, once I stopped talking ( by imitating their tune),the cardinal bird stopped talking to me too. So cute!
