To an extent, yes, but also no. Anyone can figure it out. The problem is with the relentless rule changes. Rule changes are necessary, but look at the recent volume of changes for what is essentially 10.5e. I do believe the frequency is too much for most new players. It's difficult enough to start, but then we have not only changes to the base rules but also constaint changes to army rules. I LOVE my sisters army, but just as I was figuring out 9e, I had to wipe it all and start again. It's only really beneficial to the already devoted and seasoned fans.

been playing it for a long time. we used to add movement to everyone, to make it easier to engage, we gave squads the ability to fire heavy weapons at different units, although it did take a leadership check. We almost just broke down each unit, how many shots or what attacks if you move, charge, and just try to make it more streamlined. Some of the things are now in 10th edition, some are not.

Yes, and it's not a very good game

It's just a bad game where going first is a huge advantage and balance doesn't even exist. It's not a game it's just a hobby so you can look at your cool painted miniatures.

It is way overcomplicated for what it is. There are other games that are honestly better, with rules summed up in 10 pages or so. Way too much extra stuff that isn't really needed in 40k. They had a much better and simpler rulebook 25 years ago that played faster and smoother with a lot less confusion and ambiguity. There are quite a few more factions these days, but that doesn't justify the amount of extra bloat that has been added to the game over the last 2 decades. There are a lot of people in our area that continue to play 2nd edition and just convert over the newer stuff as it comes out because it was so much easier to play back then and the rules were so much cleaner (except for maybe the hand to hand combat). They were also play tested a lot better and didn't need rules and points changes and updates every 2 or 3 months. They actually took the time to design, plan, and playtest things before codexs came out so that they weren't making entire books almost pointless a month or so after they came out. It was a much simpler time and better for the game as a whole to be honest.

A few thoughts to consider on why people still play older versions of DnD, but not 40k. This also pairs into why 40k continues to skew into meta-chasing. 1. DnD is co-op, 40k even in the most casual sense is competitive. For a co-op game you only need 1 person with the rules and willingness to run it and you're set. For a competitive game you need to find a group of people all with their own armies and rules, which is made harder if you're not playing the same thing. So naturally play gravitates to the latest version of what's most popular. 2. 40k is not backwards compatible, but it is usually forwards compatible. My primaris Salamander army can't play against my brother's 3rd edition Ultramarines marines since no datasheets exist for primaris. He however we can play in 9th or 10th using legends rules for his units just fine.

Nope. 40K is more balanced but less fun. Its too tournament driven. Several people in my group switched to OPR.

Personally myself and my friend started at the tail end of WZ Nactmund / beginning of Nephilim and have been playing often enough in league games or random pick-up games via the LGS discord in Fairfield.

As a big fan of co-op shooters, I was hoping for some Darktide news. Still waiting for Total War 40k, we need a spiritual successor to the Dawn of War series. DoW 1 and 2 were some of the best entries into the universe ever created. Side note: locak group is twisting my arm to start a Star Wars Legion army. Any recommendations forvfetting started? Yes? I have been playing in my area since 6th edition, at two different game stores near a major city in the US. We have never had more regular players than we have had in 10th edition.

I have been in the hobby since rogue trader. In my area and groups here many have moved on to other games or hobbies. The constant change of rules, points, pricing and the like has had people gravitate away. I still keep tabs on it and try to keep up with the lore but definitely not as before in so many years past. The LGS don’t host anymore events and the 2 GW stores don’t have the attraction they use too.

Playing? no. That sounds like a nightmare. I just like to paint the miniatures.

I play it roughly every 2-3 weeks casually at an LGS. Wish it was more often, but finding time and displacing my army is a pain... I envy the card game players lol. We used to go for 2K points but for the least year and to help new players catch-up, we mostly just do 1K games.

I play my own heavily modded version of the rules. Love the lore but I can't play an "I Go You Go" game.

Been playing for nearly 30 years, largely actively. Our group has moved to OPR due to 10th being a strange compromise between casual and competitive, it's too micromanaged and not very fun. 9th was, in my opinion, the most fun edition but having to write an entire A4 page of notes for strats, units and army abilities/modifiers for army lists was too much. GW actively hating their customers and turning towards ideology is also just not great to put money towards, so most've us have just stopped buying their stuff and are investing in 3D printing instead. Also the main scene in my country, in the capital, has moved from the massive main LGS to a community center, because most have stopped playing altogether. Is it dying? No, but the scene is changing and GW isn't keeping up, while they're trashing their setting.

I dropped 40k with the advent of 10th edition, because I disliked a lot of the changes from 9th to 10th and since I mostly played competitive games of 40k I think it was pretty obvious that not all factions would be anywhere close to an equal playing field at the start, so figured I'd stay out for 1 or 2 months then check back in and hope GW had ironed out the biggest balance issues and we'd start to see what direction they'd start taking the new codex books. I've been kinda checking back in whenever a major balance update or new codex for a faction that I'm interested in comes down, but so far I just keep comparing 10th edition to 9th edition rules and 10th edition comes out unfavorably pretty much every time to me, so I've stayed out. Probably going to be a while before I give 40k another go, as I also have big objections to GWs policy of just squeezing out every last dime out of their customers.

Lots of people are playing 40k. I see my local gamestore groups are always looking for games. On the topic of mission card decks... I hate them. I hate missions in general. I like good ol' days of two armies trying to destroy one another. None of this "scan servo skull" crap. I stopped playing 40k in 5th edition. I played a handful of games in 7th. I tried 3 games of 9th and it was the worst version of 40k ever (anyone who disagrees is under the age of 30 lol). Ive only played 3 games of 10th but i like it a lot better than 9th thats for sure. Star Wars Legions ... I have no idea why Warhammer based channels keep bringing it up. The whole "my dudes" issue with Star Wars is 100% on point. I have a few friends that wont stop trying to get me into it despite my repeated explinations as to why i will never play it. You couldnt pay me to play it. Star Wars is like cancer to me at this point.

Been playing since the end of 4th, early 5th. And I can't say I've really liked 9th or 10th. Mostly been playing Old World, Trench Crusade, and I play Apoc with my local group once a month.

I haven't been playing 40k for around 7 years. I play OPR instead. It's much better, faster, with alternate activation, more tactical depth, I can use the minis I want, none will be cancelled by GW. I 'm living my best life of hobbyist and gamer and you should try it too.

I recently cashed out of MTG after 20 years with the intention of buying a few 2,000 point armies. However, after spending 2 weekends scouting every LGS within an hours drive, including an official Warhammer store, to build a final price list and meet the local play groups, I have decided against joining this hobby. It wasn't the price point that put me off, it was the people. Granted not everyone I talked to about getting into 40K was overtly hostile, but the vast majority were. My only experience up to this point with 40K was the lore, I didn't want to believe what I'd heard about the tabletop community, but my intro experience seemed to confirm all the negative, toxic, and to an extent racist traits attributed to the tabletop community (one guy I met literally had a KKK themed space marine chapter). I was genuinely shocked and promptly decided this wasn't the hobby for me.

Make 40k less expensive

I think Casey's #4 keys into Shane's #1. When you set a standard taking notes is key! I can't number the amount of times I've been kicking myself because I forgot what paints I layered or how I got a skin tone. Just writing it down saves so much time in the long run.

I use the Vallejo varnishes with my airbrush. Always dilute them with some kind of thinner - usually around 50% or so - and always clean out the airbrush immediately afterwards. I actually have a crappy old airbrush that I use exclusively for stuff like that, rather than risking the good one.
