Peace and Joy and Welcome to Drumhiller Farms , thank you for watching our channel. We are a first generation regenerative farm, where myself Nathan along with my wife, Allyson and our blended family of 4 boys raise grass fed and grass finished beef, pasture raised chickens and pastured pork, with a strong focus on soil health. Everything that we do is for the soil! Our farm is located in south central Michigan in a small town called Parma. Neither Allyson or myself were raised on farms and honestly, neither one of us ever thought we would be farming but this is something that God has called us into and we have to constantly rely on Him for insight on how to make this farm work. We also own and operate a business in Jackson, Michigan called The Grate Haus Fireplaces and Stoves, you will often here us refer to this as "the city business." Thanks again for watching our channel and don't forget to hit that subscribe button and stick around for a while!!!

What’s your harvest efficiency at? Are you back to selective grazing or is this just a small portion of the animals that are getting to cherry pick?

I am not a farmer, but, I love seeing your land and animals be "natural". The land is really pretty(not skint); also enjoy seeing the "babies be curious, watching you!
@@doreenphillips5741 lol, I love the babies too. Thanks !!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the over-grazing myth. There are a lot of people out there trying to regenerate barren land, and they tend to blanket blame over-grazing as the problem, without really understanding what that means and implies. They will never consider adding livestock to an area, because to them all animals are bulldozers. As a farmer who can first hand see how cows graze, what it does to and FOR the land, you can add some reason to the speculation. Moving cattle around, letting land rest, limiting the numbers per acre... it's how we do it in Scotland, and there is a reason that Scottish beef and cattle are so prized the world over. There is a reason that the land suffered in the last couple of centuries in the US, as ranches got bigger and bigger, cattle moved less and needed more to eat than the ground could provide. A well managed herd is an asset, a badly managed one is destructive. If anything, I'd say your paddock sizes are a little too small compared to our fields. Your cows aren't running and playing. You might get a better result with a larger space. Our fields are 1.5-2 acres, rotated between grazing and growing grass. The cows get the whole field to run around in.
@@Argrouk once the halfway fence comes down it’s almost an acre and a half
Love it. Looking great D. Do you have issues with your bulls flipping your water? Mine seem that when he wants to scratch his head he will either flip the water or mineral. Trying to figure out how to stop it other then sending him down the road. He's only 2.
@@brettpayton6286 not the water, they will the minerals when it gets low
Even Greg Judy buys hay. I think he would prefer not to use it,but in one video I watched he referred to Hay as his insurance. As for fertilizer, why buy and put down Chemicals when your cattle will put down a natural fertilizer for you? Also if what I've heard about Michigan winters is accurate,I don't see how you can get through a Winter without needing hay. I've been led to believe that Michigan gets rough, brutal Winters.
@@tritchie6272 that’s kind of my point, feeding hay is like spread fertilizer and feeding your cattle.
So many benefits to what you are doing. The cattle feed the grass that in turn feeds the cattle while returning carbon back to the soil and feeding microbes while producing clean air. Everything benefits! The birds eat the flies, the dragonflies eat the mosquito larvae, the bats at night eat the mosquitos. Plus, a ton of other things happening simultaneously. NO CHEMICALS NEEDED!!! It's a beautiful thing!
Cattle and farm looking great 🙏

The reason your failing is because you have pastures instead of grassland ecosystems. You don't have enough plant diversity, not enough structural diversification and your not deeply rooted enough.

@@user-kv2pt4lu9y oh yes they do!!
As a new venture, it would be interesting to take some soil samples to see what you are dealing with. Brix readings are a cheaper option you can do yourself to monitor plant sugar levels. They should increase as you improve the soil fertility and your cattle performance is directly related to the amount of plant sugars available.. Don’t mind me, I just like hard data as a vindication of my work.

They are leaving that much, because it has matured past palatability. If you look, they are leaving the stems of that long grass. Not knocking your practices, but that is why they are leaving what they are leaving.
So you said 100 birds you gonna add. So each one of these 10x10’s you could do 50 birds? I built a suscovich only holds 30. Looking to have more. Thanks God Bless
@@rickyartibee3460 yes you can easily run 50 birds per 10 x 10 tractor. I prefer to run 45.
This has happened to me and its actually not as bad as it looks. Just let it rest. It actually shows the immense power of the grazing herd as a tool and demostrates how a subtle change in management can leave a dramatic impact. Youre still doing a great job. Dont sweat it, there is so much seed on that grass and you have your recovery long enough to where it will be fine.
@@petereldracher5660 thanks for the kind words!
Great job! That spot will recover! Not ideal of course but it’s not a perfect world 😂 Keep calm and graze on!👍👍
@@runningtfarmsnc thanks buddy!
Hey bud. Love your videos. We holistically graze over her in nz. We’ve done just what you’ve done on really wet days. It takes longer to come back but don’t beat yourself up. We now give the cattle more area when heavy rain is coming. Most importantly though apart from this we graze in the end of the blaze of growth stage when the grass is converting the most solar energy into growth. Leave it too long and solar conversion / growth slows. Graze too early and you don’t convert the optimum amount of the suns energy. You have to really monitor grass more closely to achieve this. Looks like where the cattle are going your pastures are left too long. On that paddock you said you overgrazed last time, it looks like you could graze that now before the blaze of growth flattens off. Same deal as you’re doing but looking at grass recovery and basing your rounds on that. Grass recovery and minimising over recovery is really important to convert the maximum amount of the suns energy into grass. How much the cattle eat isn’t so important as you’ve seen on your first muck up
@@WildMeadowsFarm right on, thanks!
I had a similar situation last year, all back to normal and maybe better. Not a mistake! Give it rest it’ll be fine.
@@jameskoebke5776 definitely!
Im assuming you meant grazed it down too far or too severely? Not overgrazed because you didnt stay on it to graze any regrowth.
@@masonbaylorbears true!
@drumhillerfarms6858 also didn't look bad at all! If anything the regrowth looked better than the next paddock. The pugged up spot may have some interesting plants grow back but it's all good just non selectively graze those plants also. My cows seem to rarely get majority green grass or really grass at all so you'll be surprised what a cow will eat that isn't the normal grasses
Hey not sure the temperature there right now. I would made the same move especially if it was hot out the tall grass helps keep them cool
