Matching play styles with fearful, biting, and reactive dogs — Balanced Dog Training
Matching “play” styles together!
Not all dogs like to physically play together - and that’s totally fine. Just like us humans, dogs have different temperaments and preferences on how they spend their free time with others. While our primary focus is peaceful co-existence (dogs can live and mingle together without issue) we also allow more physical interactions when appropriate.
Current student, River, and our dog, Grim, are older and prefer to explore together instead of wrestling like the youngsters. PUPS Grads, Henry & Dudley, are heavy and experienced players. Current students, Benny & Penny, are younger and more sensitive. They have a lighter play style and pair well together.
All of the daily leadership and trust building we practice, extends to the “playground” where we are always supervising to enforce rules, advocate for their personal needs, and ensure everyone has a good time. We love watching their personalities grow and new friendships form! Especially, dogs that haven’t been able to in the past.
Good job, everyone! 🐾❤️😜

Store trip with poodle mixes and Aussie - Balanced Dog Training
zhlédnutí 42Před 21 dnem
Store trip with our current students! We always start with warm up exercises outside of the store - including both passive and active training. The same leadership exercises are used inside of the store which reduces anxiety, pushy behavior, and reactivity. Instead of becoming overwhelmed with indecision, fear, or excitement, they get to play “follow the leader” 😉 and focus on the given tasks. ...

Ecollar “heel” with Dudley, Benny, Penny, & River! E-Collar Technologies remote collars are amazing tools that allow us to mimic leash pressure just by pressing a button. This communication device doesn’t give directional guidance, so it’s important to use a long line and body language to help them figure out which way to go during the learning process. With practice, we can eventually just use...

Penny’s mom joined us for her mid-training session! In the past, Penny could not contain her excitement around her mom. She would frantically jump, roll, run around, and pee if touched. Despite ignoring these unwanted antics the best they could, Penny was still very scatter-brained and inconsolable. After practicing new expectations with us for a week, her mom was able to duplicate these techni...

We worked on introducing him to new communication tools and techniques so his mom can provide...

Benny’s family joined us for his mid-training session! We worked on giving him guidance with the leash and how to flow through different commands so life can become more predictable. They did a great job providing directions and even practiced manners outside walking past another dog. Due to a preexisting ear infection flare up, we’re planning to continue his training with a modified program. B...

Dudley’s family joined us for his mid-training session! After some changes at home, there have been inconsistencies and a bit too much unearned freedom that resulted in behavioral regression. We worked on getting them back on track! They practiced fine-tuning his listening skills as we discussed rules to live by. Some dogs need more structure than others to be successful, and that’s ok! We love...

Field trip with River & Benny! We always start by creating calmness in the car with the down command. They practiced new techniques and began establishing our new expectations with her. Their other dog, Otis, als...

Leash manners and prong collar intro with Penny! This sweet girl pulls hard on the leash, jumps, and is easily distracted by anything that moves. Ecollar training with River & Benny! After teaching dogs the basics with leash pressure, we apply low-level ecollar stim (pressure that mimics the leash) in order to create follow through of known commands for eventual off leash communication. This tool is a game changer for anxious/nervous dogs as we can “talk” to them at just the right level needed. We utilize E-Collar Technologies to teach b...

Leash manners with River! This pretty girl is reactive to others and, at 8 years old, has had a lot of time to turn these choices into bad habits. She’s a pushy dog and very anxious in general. What was so funny?
What size collar did you use?
3.0mm Herm Sprenger 😊
Do you have any specific e-collar recommendations?
@@TheXGOLDENPHOENIXx we exclusively use E-Collar Technologies brand! 😊
@@PeaceUnityPetServices awesome thank you so much! I look forward to watching more of your videos
I want to talk about your CZcams video upload
Awesome! Thanks!
Did u guys use prong collar ?
He was already being handled on a prong collar (and still struggling with reactivity) upon arrival to us. We continued to use that, but with effective techniques, along with a mini educator ecollar and structured daily routine. 😊
@@PeaceUnityPetServices nice cool to hear just got one for my lab and will use it to help with his reactivity on walks
I have a rat terrier she is 3 years old and a wonderful dog
Thank you for this instructional video. I too have a feisty male black and tan shiba inu who does the exact same thing and I've been looking into muzzling more. This was extremely helpful in how to introduce him to it.
Wat size is that crate
What size was the prong collar?
2.25mm Herm Sprenger but could also use a 3.0mm depending on fur thickness 😊
Nice, great job.You can see the fear in as she walks with her tail tucked. After she is so relaxed.
<3
I see he has a e collar on was he introduced to that before this session?
She's lovely Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure!
Good video, thx.
Glad you liked it!
How does that collar not affect his airways?
also what size prong collar did you use?
2.25mm Herm Sprenger prong collar 😊 The remote collar is an Ecollar Technologies Micro educator. 🐾
omg so happy to see this video. I have a french bulldog who is similar to Quigley (reactive to other dogs, been in fights, etc.). I have been able to use a gentle leader on my other dog which works great but unfortunately frenchies have a flat face so gentle leaders arent an option. I tried using a front clip harness but that has done little to deter his reactivity and I have been so conflicted on whether or not to use a prong collar sine they get a lot of negative reactions. But this has given me that extra nod to try it! I hope to see more updates on Quigley.
May I know what size to use for a Frenchie?
Are you sure he's a GSD/Husky and not a GSD/Husky/Malamute? Huskies tails are not permanently in the sickle position, they are down like other dogs most of the time but curl up when they get going, while Malamutes on the other hand have their tails curled up all the time. Anyways at least you get the tools to handle the pulling in North America, here in Scotland almost everything is banned, I'm just lucky that my Husky is much better behaved with a harness (still has his moments) than having the leash attached to a flat collar (he was a complete nightmare).
This was a really helpful video, thank you. Denali is beautiful. I have a 16 month old black male GSD that I use a Sprenger collar on. The dog class trainers recommended a harness, that definitely didn't work, he was pulling me everywhere. I find the Prong collar works well for my boy, I can get him to walk beside me even in the busiest of places. Looking forward to more videos, thank you!
Thank you and that’s awesome you found a tool that works for you! The results speak for themselves. 🥰 We have many videos showing examples of prong collar use and other training techniques. Keep up the great work with your pup! 🐾
Great video; thanks for demonstrating safe and effective use of prong collar!
thank you! short and informative video!
Hate annoying videos with stupid music and subtitles. Good information in the video but it will get lost amongst the trainers who aren't scared to talk on camera.
Thanks for the feedback!
Love this🥰👍🏼👏🏼
Thank you! 🥰
Amazing video. I'm your fan.
It's good to find another channel of people properly working, training, and actually helping dogs in difficult situations. Pity you don't get more subs. If you were PP and filmed yourself failing at training dogs, you'd have 10 times the followers. Cheers
So true! 😅 Thanks for subscribing and the kind words. 🐾
Yw :)
What size pinch is this a 2.25?
Correct! Once he was over ~60lbs we switched him over to a 3.0mm
At what age should I start using a prong collar to a mini golden doodle?
We typically start introduction to the prong collar around 6 months old depending on the dog’s behavior. Be sure to take it slow and teach your dog to come towards you when they feel tension on the leash. We have a lot of prong collar intro videos for reference! Happy training :-)
What size were you using for the prong collar? Im looking at the herm sprenger 1.5mm but it is rated for 15lbs and under my dog weighs 20 pounds and the 2.5mm is for 40lbs and under
Oh my goodness I have a husky weiner dog mix! Her name is Gorda, and she acts just like this Husky mix. She displays the same temperament, the same biting habit, and the same constant jumping. She won't listen when I call her name. I also had to purchase a prong collar for her too! She has so much energy, it's out of control!!!
awesome😃😃
Are you serious these collars should be banned, your not much of a dog trainer if you have to use one
This is my dog. I would never do anything to hurt him. I will admit I was a little skeptical at first. But everything was explained to me very well, and I made the educated decision to proceed. He came home from 5 days of training his happy, go lucky, little lovebug self. And his behavior on leash is completely transformed. Like literally jaw dropping.

dude! you created useful view! ;)
What collars do you use? I have a beagle and he pulls hard on the leash as well and I really want to correct this but I don't know what size of collar to get
what size prong collar are you using here?
@@PeaceUnityPetServicesthanks
This is where prong and e-collars are good tools to use. Owners allowing their dogs to pull like that with flat collars can seriously injure the dog's trachea and neck, over a long period of time. With an e-collar/prong (which I've used) , short, quick corrections teaches the dog and gives you the behavior that you want from them.
Exactly! So many owners struggle with out-of-control behavior on walks. We’ve had clients that were previously injured by their dog or the dog injured by flat collars/harnesses. Many people with dogs like this end up just keeping them at home... With the right tools and leverage, people can safely enjoy taking their dog on more adventures. ✌️
@@PeaceUnityPetServices Yes, mentioned that in one of your other videos. My two females GSDs were 90-lb'rs, so that's 180 lbs on the end of two leashes. I'd walk them on prong collars. While I trained them to walk nice on a loose leash, I live in a suburban area that 's near a wildlife preserve, so it has a lot of squirrels, deer, etc. How many times have those prong collars saved me from injury when the girls would see a squirrel dart across the street, a kid whiz by on a bicycle, a dog they didn't like, etc. They'd react, the leashes would jerk, and without the prong collars, I'd have been flat on my face. Prong and e-collars are soooo mis-understood by so many dog owners to their detriment (and the dog's).
This is one of the best and most misunderstood tools. It was created by a vet to prevent tracheal damage. I have one for my mastiff and also for my 3lb chihuahua. Chihuahua was so reactive seeing dogs at distance to the point he was uncontrollable. Prong collar made him a calm relaxed dog i can take anywhere now.
Is he wearing an ecollar?
All but the last crate feeding video, yes! Low-level Ecollar communication is very subtle. 😊 Conditioning him to this tool allows his family to communicate with him and create space from resources safely and without confrontation. This was essential since he had bitten his family in the past. Now everyone is safe and thriving together! Ecollar Technologies uses the same medical grade static as a TENS unit which is used to engage/relax muscles in people for physical therapy.
Nice video. How often should I keep the Prong collar on? When do I take it off?
awesome!
What does this have to do with e collar training
Wow
Working with my 5 month old English Bull Terrier, who is exact same tri color as the Rat Terrier in this video :) I'm doing homework after our first obedience training and I'm thinking we need to move to a prong..she is just so so stubborn. She was fostered before I adopted her and they didn't work on leash behavior at all so she has some horrible pulling tendencies. She doesn't seem to be picking up the idea of release of pressure with behaviors I want her to do with a normal collar.
A prong collar would definitely give you more leverage without restricting her airways. Look for a 2.25mm Herm Springer prong collar and order extra links if needed as it should be sized high and snug on the neck. Happy training! ❤️
Great job, exactly what I was looking for. Just got given a 2 year old Shepski with no training 3 weeks ago. She was keep in the back yard all the time with 4 other dogs(which one of them attacked her). She is acting the same way around other dogs on our walks as the Shepard in the video. Around people she’s good. Tried flat collar , gentle leader, easy walk, and slip leash. Nothing is working , my Herms pinch collar arrives tomorrow. Wish me luck😃
Prong collars are a total game changer when introduced correctly! If you search our page for prong collar intro you’ll find many examples to understand the techniques. Good luck! 😁
What age of yorkie can you use this with? I have an 8 week old. Thanks!
What about trakia issues?
@@seminolewind1999the slip lead works well for dogs that are sensitive to leash pressure. 😊 For dogs that pull more (some Yorkies included) we recommend using a prong collar to prevent trachea damage.
What the dog doing
