Yamaha D85 Electone MIDI Conversion
zhlédnutí 42KPřed 10 lety
Overview of my Yamaha D85 Electone organ. The D85 was the last of the analog organs from Yamaha built in 1980. When it was new it cost just short of £4000 a lot of money in 1980. This one has been looked after and is in pretty much mint condition so I decided it deserved a new lease of life with a bit of modernisation. It uses a MIDI decoder from J-Omega electronics and minature relays from Far...

    Interesting what one can do with the good old analog D85, the masterpiece from Yamaha.

    Why didn't you use CD4066 or CD4016 quad switches instead of relays?

    The relays make for an amusing rhythm track :)

  • @lawrencedoliveiro9104

    Can you wire it up the other way? That is, use the Yamaha purely as a performance surface, to control sounds generated elsewhere? Because having one of these on stage could be quite impressive, if it could generate the right sounds.

    Actually, used to have a Yamaha D-85 27 years ago. I did not even know that there was a midi connector underneath the organ's. It an eye-opener.

    Interesting piece of hardware! Since the mircrocontroller has a USB port why didn't you send the MIDI data over that instead of the slower MIDI serial interface?

    • @GreatBallsOfAcid
      @GreatBallsOfAcid Před 5 lety

      Andrew Mello I believe it’s called key click and it is an effect on many ‘modern’ organs like this. I have it even on my organ module - with no keys at all 👻

    • @TheMrkuul
      @TheMrkuul Před 10 lety

      those clicks you hear are the mini relays underneath the keys which he needed to fit to be able to use midi.

    • @osakaben10
      @osakaben10 Před 10 lety

      i see...it's a pretty interesting retro-fit for midi...can that clicking noise be eliminated? As always no harm meant. that's a good organ...

    • @TheMrkuul
      @TheMrkuul Před 10 lety

      Possibly if you filt the relays to isolate them.

    • @TheMrkuul
      @TheMrkuul Před 10 lety

      But this only Works if the instrument has no Cv (controlled voltage) output. If it has, you can easily convert Cv to midi as the electrical signal is already there

    Awsome! thanks for posting, and the heads up on the J-omega MIDI to parallel products. Im going to mod my FS-30 using some array of MOSFETs or transistors to handle the note on/off switching click-free.
