Totally original 19.5/8 POLYPHON, fabulous unmolested collector quality condition. Original Finish, original paint on mechanism. Plays beautifully with a great tone and deep resonant base. Still retains all its original keys & comes with 12 good original discs.
Would be very difficult to find better. This machine belonged to a late friend & It very soon found a new home. Life circumstances have brought it around again. Rare opportunity in this condition.

Viennese, Austro - Hungarian Empire Mantle clock, c1830/35. Of 3 day duration. Grand Sonnerie strike that can be silenced at will. The musical box, which can also be silenced, signed Anton Olbrich in Wein. Mahogany case, with boxwood stringing. Nicole Freres 8 air, s/n 19028 c1839 in ‘as found’ condition. The brass ware is a drab olive green, the comb dull grey, the case lid was broken many moons ago. I first watched this video on March 13 of this year, the day my dog passed on after 10 long years of making us a happy family. When I first watched this video, I imagined her spirit looking around the corners of my empty, dark house before walking away to find heaven. The click at the end of the melody made me think about how life can stop so abruptly. It’s sad that it stopped, but you’re glad you got to experience it. This is truly a beautiful melody.

Recreational engineering is a lost craft..... Whether a 1890s music box or a 1980s Tomy racing car toy (probably the last ever great piece of recreational mechanical engineering), it all seserves to be thought of higher.

I like to think of this as the oldest form of MIDI notes.
There were self playing musical instruments working on the same principle around in 1805 - see: sur plateau . Going back even 100 years earlier there were pinned wooden barrels that dictate the notes sounded via a pipe organ, bells - see: carillon, & even glass bells on some early German clocks. The diversity & ingenuity of some early pieces is mind blowing. How can this box perform different loudnesses and impressions?
It’s what’s known as a ‘Forte Piano’ box. Forte - Piano is a sudden dynamic change used in a musical score. This is achieved by two musical combs one Forte (loud) & the other Piano (soft) There were earlier boxes that achieved similar results on one comb, with long & short pinsBut the later may well have been produced with a different temper as the frequency of resonating & sustain are markedly different. One of the rarest boxes with such expression was made by Lecoultre & Grangier one example we know of has no fewer than 7 pin lengths. The math in plotting out the cylinder with over 12,000 pins is just incredible. Thanks for your interest.
