    Doesn't Sonic still do that to this day? From my experience, SA1, SA2, Unleashed, Colors, Generations, Mania, and Superstars all still have this design of replaying until you master a level. I've done that same thing with all of these games, like I do with the classics. But I still do agree with the fact that "Sonic was never intended for the modern audience", that makes a bit of sense. But that's not really why people dislike him so much. In reality, it's SEGA constantly screwing over Sonic Team, causing them to constantly retry, and never giving enough resources. Then add the internet turning valid criticism to unnecessary hate, and you got the phrase "Sonic was never good."

    • @ArtcadeShow
      @ArtcadeShow Před 17 dny

      It has that, but that's not the forefront of it's appeal, unlike OG Sonic, which had THAT appeal, but was prioritized. which is why ppl liked it so much back in the day. I do think people are misunderstanding the video. Modern Sonic has it's own thing, which is great. What I'm talking about is what made Sonic great to begin with. & that's what it was. Modern Sonic has a very different appeal and has strayed from Classic A LOT.

      @@ArtcadeShow I see now. Thanks, that cleared things up for me. But I do have a question. If Sonic Team went back to prioritising level mastery, would they be able to pull it of? A lot of fangames have tried this, (Sonic GT being the best example), and seem to be pretty good. But a lot of the times they either come with a slew of problems, or are just hard to consistently make.

    • @ArtcadeShow
      @ArtcadeShow Před 17 dny

      @@user-mq8mo9zi4q They can pull it off. SEGA is multi billion dollar company with talented developers, & resources to make a great game, the issue is, they don’t have confidence in Sonic and their property. For years they’ve been letting the fans decide what Sonic is, when in reality SEGA is the only ones who know what Sonic is supposed to be. They are more than capable of making a great Sonic game, but they have to implement what made Sonic great to begin with first. Then continue to build on that. SEGA absolutely needs to have confidence in what they create.

      @@ArtcadeShow Well I have good news for you! Midori recently leak ongoing things within SEGA. It has revealed, that they are finally taking Sonic seriously. There's this new division called "Sonic Pillar", and basically they are using this to input many more quality control measures within development. And it's already showing, as the Gens remaster has been finished long ago, and they are working on the next game. If all goes well, then we will most likely see the best, most polished, most ambitious, and hopefully least divisive Sonic game of all time. I'm not sure if they plan to go back and take more from the Genesis days, but if they do, I have faith they'll find a way.

    I will always think the Unwiished Day stages are a perfect combination of the diffrent pulls. It is extrinsically motivating(S ranks, 100%) but leads you down the path to an intrinsic reward(You get better and better and learn the stages more and in the end, you can push MUCH further than the S-rank time ever asked from you). It is easy to get into and challenging and satisfying to master. The game would not be any better if there was a barrier to entry, that's just silly.

    My opinion is that Sonic was always good, too. It was my first game series as well. I grew up with the Classics, and moved to the 3D games in my teens. I played the occasional Mario too, but Sonic always outleveled Mario in my eyes. There's just something so captivating about it, if that makes any sense. It's easy to get into, yet difficult to master.

    I think a game like Sonic Mania struck a good balance between getting to know the level allowing for faster clearing plus still making it fun on a first go-around. Because like fighting games take a bit to ‘get fun’, so did Sonic for me, but with fighting games it felt like I was actively learning due to how matches don’t last that long and are constantly in a new context, Sonic is just the same level again with no real reason to finish it again besides just… wanting to. I’m glad Sonic’s structure has changed to be more balanced in that regard, because I think that’s why this ‘never good’ argument even came up. I think Sonic’s design was good for it’s time, but nowadays, like you said, there’s less reason to replay games, and sonic doesn’t have a bunch of tournaments happening that people watch. Fighting games are intrinsically but also extrinsically motivated because of that whole competitive scene, because of the community or to play against friends. Sonic had essentially none of that besides possibly the speedrunning scene, and thus I think it’s better that it moved away from that for a more balanced stance on what motivates a player to play it. Again, Sonic Mania did a great job at it. Sonic hasn’t fallen off because of losing his unique design identity, Sonic has fallen off because of a lack of polish and constantly reinventing the wheel. Very nicely articulated what’s unique about classic sonic design though, very nice watch.

    It's simple, in boost games it's just you having the "Sonic experience", whereas earlier titles were you playing *as* Sonic. When that stopped happening, we lost interest and the last couple ones where we played *as* Sonic before the switch over to the Boost formula sucked (or Shadow, since he functions virtually the same), so that really didn't help. As I've found in Frontiers and replaying the Adventure games, nah it's not Nostalgia, those games are still pretty good.

"06 is bad and a glitchfest, Shadow the Hedgehog was edgy, insert Baldy McNoseHair joke." They've been beating the same dead horse for years. Don't get me wrong, there's lots of things to criticize about the series, but you can usually tell when someone is a (I hate this term but it fits) 'normie' who has only played like two games and base their opinion of the entire franchise off of that, and when it's coming from someone who is actually open minded and or has more experience with the series.

    Not bad at all, but the lack of analysis and overall understanding when it comes to the appeal of 3D Sonic, both Adventure and Boost games, makes this feel like it glorifies Classic gameplay style while diminishes the Modern ones, especially when it doesn't cover the many flaws present in those first Genesis games.

    • @ArtcadeShow
      @ArtcadeShow Před 27 dny

      Theres an apparent different appeal that modern Sonic has, we can all acknowledge that. Not what this video is about though, it’s about giving a different perspective on why classic Sonic was good, as oppose to giving a surface level argument like “the levels were good”. Also I don’t want to be disingenuous about the success of modern Sonic. At the beginning of the video I said Modern games felt weird to me. So I said my opinion on why, the classic succeeded because of the era it was released in, on top of the fact the level design was specifically catered toward intrinsically motivated gamers.

      Clearly, Sonic USED to be good. It's the kind of game you practice over and over, for it to not translate into any skill in the future, because you'd just have to train over and over again and again. It's sunk cost towards hoping Sonic would be good again, because it's not hauntological, it's not BEING good, it WAS good or it WOULD BE good.

  • @Continental_Champ
    @Continental_Champ Před 27 dny

    3:32 Not true. While extrinsic motivation can also play a positive role, it's more crucial for players to find their tasks intrinsically motivating. Also I don't like the argument of "old Sonic games were better because it had a barrier of entry". The philosophy you mentioned of getting better at the game so that you can beat the levels faster still very much applies to the modern games. Sure, Sonic is "going fast" regardless of whether you're beating a level in a quick time or not, and it's easier to finish a given level on your first try without dying, but the philosophy of "get better at the game, get better at controlling Sonic, learn the level, find the shortcuts, and beat the levels in a faster time" never went away.

    • @ArtcadeShow
      @ArtcadeShow Před 27 dny

      They are both crucial, it’s not real life and it’s not as deep. Someone can be searching for a weapon, excited that they found a cool weapon- and that’s a perfectly good motivation. Also I didn’t say Old Sonic games were better, I said they were always good, versus the argument that people say Sonic was never good. At the end, I mentioned that modern Sonic games don’t have the same hardcore appeal and SEGA designed it with casuals in mind. You can still play it like how it used to be back in the 90’s, but that’s not forefront of it’s design anymore. When people buy newer Sonic games nowadays it’s not for that reason anymore. It’s for entirely different reasons. Which means it has different appeal.

    Sonic 06 has its issues, but you can see the heart and soul behind the rush, while the story isnt necessarily good per se, it had potential that if given more time, would be even better, minus that..."super scene", Mephilas (please spell correct me) was a great villain, silver was great (minus gameplay), and cmon, Sonic (Present), Shadow (Past) and Silver (Future) having to fight Solaris in their respective time was badass. If given more time, Blaze would probably have had more interactions with other characters. The level design of 06 was great, i love Wave Ocean, White Acropolis, Crisis City, Flame Core, Radical Train, and Kingdom Valley. Mach Speed wouldve been phenomenal given the time (Project 06 showing potentially what they couldve done), the soundtrack was phenomenal, again, the levels i love have my favorite music, and then theres His World, All Hail Shadow, and Dreams of an Absolution, with Solaris Phase 2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) remains my favorite for the potential and heart put in it that most other bad sonic games like Boom:Rise of Lyric dont have

    You seem like an aspiring video essayist, so I guess I'll drop my two cents about the video. At first, it seemed well-structured and well-researched with you talking about the connection between ancient samurai and the Sephiroth/Cloud rivalry, as well as the broad ideological theme underlying the connection... But then the video seems to devolve into just reciting random facts about Sephiroth. You mention his sword, the inspiration behind the name, and the notion that it's a crucial part of his characterization... Okay? But what point are you trying to make here? Why bring the sword up at all? What would the video lose without it? And the second section is in a similar vein. It's titled "Characterization" but you mostly just keep reciting trivia about Sephiroth's development. What point are you trying to make here? Would your narrative lose anything without going over the voice actors? And this section doesn't really go over his actual characterization in the story, i.e., the actions that define his character. You just gave a brief synopsis of this in the first section, and then briefly mention the themes of the character in the final section. Wouldn't it be better if you dedicated the meat of the video to actually talking about how these themes manifest themselves in the story through what the character does? Not reciting the plot, but thinking about how his specific actions fit into the ideas of his character and the the story. Also, a few petty complaints about wording: - "level-headed person with a superiority complex" is a bit of an oxymoron, don't you think? - repeating the same wording several times in a short timespan ("force of nature" in this case) always makes it look like the creator is running out of things to say Don't take this personally and don't feel down from my criticism, especially since you yourself mention struggling with this video. I advise you to just be mindful about how you structure your essay and always ask yourself what is the overall point of the section and whether you supported it well with the examples or reasons you give. If something seems like it doesn't have anything to do with the point, maybe put it in a separate place or cut it altogether. Okay, I'm gonna stop more before I start sounding even more like a college professor. I'm sure that with enough practice, writing video essays will become easier and you will get the hang of them.

      I meant to give a full reply earlier! Few things I do want to add. I very much do appreciate all of your criticisms (esp with the wording, I'll work on that) For these videos, I wouldn't necessarily say that they are conventional video essays, where I throw in my two cents about the character etc or give you story exposition. I may do that from time to time, but this is very much a quick fire "Did you Know?" kind of vibe, with the conception of the characters, developer interviews and other aspects of the character that the viewer may not have known. As far as pacing etc it's more of a bite size, in your face kind of thing. I'm not looking to sit down and have you all watch a 40 minute video about the character that goes in depth about the characters goals and limits. It may not be your vibe, and that's cool! That's just not what this channel is, with that being said, I will definitely take your criticism into to improve for the next few videos, thanks for watching <3
