2024 07 03 Fellsman 60007
On 3rd July 2024 A4 no. 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" headed the return "Settle and Carlisle Fellsman" from Carlisle to Blackpool. In the variable weather of the 2024 summer, 60007 is seen passing Settle, departing from Long Preston, climbing Wilpshire Bank past Langho and heading out of Blackburn at Cherry Tree.

2024 06 08 Southern Steam duo on Northern Fells

On 8th June 2024, two steam specials hauled by "West Country" locos followed each other up to Shap Summit, 7 minutes apart. 34046 "Braunton" headed the "Lakelander" special, followed by 34067 "Tangmere" on the "Northern Belle". 34067 returned down the Settle and Carlisle line, seen at Kirkby Stephen station and at the top of Wilpshire bank just before Blackburn.

On June 1st 2024, Vintage Trains ran the "Mersey Express" special from Tyseley to Liverpool and back. Castle class loco no. 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe" is seen arriving at Crewe, passing Winsford then arriving at Liverpool Lime Street for its return trip. Finally 5043 completes a noisy climb out of Lime Street as it passes Edge Hill station

On 20th April 2024, The "Great Britain XVI" railtour passed down the Welsh Borders on its way from Liverpool to Swansea. 45407 headed the train through Frodsham on the way to Chester where it was joined by 44871, seen passing Chirk and heading south from Shrewsbury at Dorrington.

On 13th April 2024 70000 "Britannia" returned to the mainline, hauling the "Lakelander" special from Preston to Carlisle. The train is seen climbing past Oxenholme and at Greenholme (north of Tebay) after stopping in Grayrigg loop. Unfortunately due to a mechanical problem found at Carlisle, 70000 was unable to take the return leg of the trip back down the Settle and Carlisle line.

👋👍 It never occurred to me that they would have a diesel engine attached.
The diesel loco is needed to to provide electric train heating - currently the Mk 1 sets with steam heating belonging to the operator West Coast Railway aren't allowed on the network.

Why did 5197 have a whistle simalar to 2253 at this gala if you look closeley when 5197 blows its whistle its not its usual 5 chime
sorry I can't explain, but full marks for noticing the difference! I understand there can be significant mechanical differences between S160 locos despite them belonging to the same class, partly due to their subsequent history working in Europe and/or Asia. But they certainly look and sound good when working hard!

While the tour with 5043 left Preston late it gave us the rare chance of seeing two tours side by side in Carnforth and when at Carlisle had 5043 not run late she would have vacated platform 3 before 34067 arrived in Carlisle, so the two would never have been in the station at the same time. As 34067 was supposed to arrive in P3, with 5043 occupying it they had to put the BOB in P1. Hard to believe they arrived 5 minutes apart and I can definitely say that 5043 put on a good show going solo up Shap as I was onboard the trip hauled by the Earl. 5043 was originally supposed to have its whole train turned, but WCR nicked the path off them so instead it was a case of drop of the castles coaches in the loop opposite P1 and then turn 5043 plus the GUV and support coach around with the 47 changing ends for the shunts.
From passengers onboard the tour with 5043 the cause for the delay in Preston that morning was down to another passenger onboard having a heart attack.
let's hope the person concerned has recovered and will be fit for another day out!
@@puresteamvideo sadly they died, air ambulance ended up getting involved but sadly they passed away before 5043 reached Carnforth that evening.

Wow, been over 20 years since I signed/drove that line from Cheadle Hulme to Stoke. Great view of the black 5 on the Bonis Hall Straight as we called it. Was flying. Great video.

How did you get lineside permission?
I'm a member of the Operating Staff at the CVR and have a Personal Track Safety (PTS) pass for this railway, plus permission to go lineside for photography. Sorry but CVR does not offer lineside passes for visitors.

Thanks for your appreciation! Video camcorder is a Panasonic HC-V770 so nothing special. Cheddleton station is in a valley so when there's no wind there can be the echo effect that you heard. Why not come down some time and hear it for yourself!
That is interesting. I used to live in Winsford and came across to the Churnet Valley Railway on occasion. Now I live in Lancashire and hope that I may be able to take shots of steam excursions on the Carlisle to Settle line this year. Having said that I have a Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera, the video of which I have never used. Perhaps I should use that? I'll have make some enquiries. Hats off to the volunteers who make the age of steam come alive again.

Hiya, do you have any directions or tips on how to get to Bradnop Cutting? Thanks Toby’s Trains :)
By road, take the A523 out of Leek towards Ashbourne, after 3 miles turn right opposite the turn for Bradnop. This gives you the view of the cutting from the bridge. This is the only public access to the cutting itself but there are a few public footpaths crossing the line either side of the crossing. Hope that helps if you're around the Leek area!

One of the very best films of this wonderfully exciting railway. Well worked out locations allowing focus on the hard-working loco sometimes well before appearance and well after. Great use of sound off the hills. This makes other heritage lines very boring indeed since there is great mileage and the gradients.

Good to see it again... It moved to Tyesely and it's last shed being Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn more than two years later in 1966..
When 75014 is seen climbing past Bradnop it does have some resemblance to climbing Talerddig bank?

Very enjoyable Part 1 from the Winter Gala.
When this post came up on my home page I suddenly realised it will be 20 years ago next week (18 January) that my wife and I visited the SVR as part of her 50th birthday trip to Shrewsbury early in 2004. We stayed at the Prince Rupert, visited the Abbey, walked much of the town, looked at the mildly flooded Severn and, on Sunday the 18th, ventured out to Bridgnorth for a return trip to Kidderminster with steak and kidney pie in the station cafe between legs. Near freezing, frost coating the area behind the loco roads at Bridgnorth early on, fabulous atmospherics and a huge reel of super 8 video transferred on to VHS, which even today I watch with great enjoyment. A truly great day out even in the depths of winter.
yes the great thing about Bridgnorth is it is worth visiting as a town - my wife has been known to have a happy wander around the town while I enjoy the delights of the railway. One upon a time we even camped in the car park!
