Comparison Review: Nike Pegasus Plus vs. adidas Adizero SL 2: Rare! High Drop and Un plated.
In the video, I compare the August releasing Pegasus Plus to the Adizero SL2. Both are 10mm drop, about the same stack height 35/25 , and are un plated, flexible light (8.45 oz /240g US8.5) tempo to daily trainers. A rarity these days but still most useful to mix it up in a rotation and work the feet differently.

How stiff is the rocker? Anything like the kayano 30/31?
Not nearly as stiff. More a flex based shoe
@@RoadTrailRun thanks!
Bill Rodgers a great marathon runner, points out no dividers in the sport. He was amazing in the sport, but knew others would be great in running. He looks great ! I still have my issues of Runners World.
Great review! The best Genesis review out there. After 10 miles on rocky terrain in the Genesis, the forefoot lacks some protection. I can definitely feel the smaller rocks. Otherwise a great shoe
Yes, I think it depends on the "sharpness" of the technical terrain. I ran them at Grossglockner Ultra Trail 100K in Austria last year (70+ miles actually) and they were great. I also used them at Palisades 100M last month and my feet took a beating after 60M. The technical, alpine terrain at GGUT was smoother and "chunkier" rocks while the stuff last month in Idaho/Wyoming was more scattered, jagged, and sharp - lots of stuff you just couldn't get around. I was wishing that I went with a shoe with more forefoot protection from the start.
Brilliant review thanks. I just have one question. In terms of the narrowness, if you were to compare these with the standard width speedgoat 5, which one would you say is narrower? I wear 8,5 speedgoat 5 and it feels snug to the sides but the material has some stretch to it so it is bearable and I can run in them with no issues
I think there's a bit more "give" to this upper - it's not as secure as the Speedgoat 5. Definitely a different shoe. If your concern is narrowness, and SG5 is ok for you, Zegama 2 should be fine.
A question re the Pegasus Plus: Are the insoles removable (like they are in my Peg 39s) or are they sewn in in the same style as the Vaporfly?
Plus has a removable ortholite type (although not branded as such) insole
V13 way too soft. My foot muscles were working to stay balanced when walking or standing. There is zero stability. It exhausted my foot muscles.
I’ve had these for a couple months and can say that I hate them. They are the most dull ride, way too overbuilt, and not great on mixed surfaces.
The ZoomX here is all about softness and cushion - I agree, not the most responsive of rides.
Which one do you prefer? Specter 2 or Asics Noosa Tri 16?
They are very close in ride. The Specter clearly has a broader more comfortable if not quite as secure upper as the Noosa. Specter foam is more energetic and softer while the Noosa's is a bit firmer and more responsive and quicker reacting. Both are excellent.
@@RoadTrailRun Thanks.
Does it require sizing up half a size? What about the width in the forefoot and the volume inside?
Do not size up. Go to the wide version if you need to. Lots of room in regular fit here.
@@RoadTrailRun I wear glycerin gts 21 in size US 10 Wide 2E do I need the same size and width in ghost max 2?
@@ahmaadulhassanbajwa9906which Glycerin upper? 2E wide in regular but maybe up 1/2 size in Stealthfit
@@RoadTrailRun i already have the glycerin 21 just asking about it as a reference that i run in brooks glycerin 21 go to support in size US 10 Wide 2E. If i order the same size in the ghost max 2 will it fit right?
Saucony triumph series is 10mm drop and unplated.
Not uptempo brainiac
@@bigshotz1240 definitely is uptempo I do threshold runs in mine champ
@@Wildbrooker4304 your forced to because you can’t afford an actual uptempo shoe.
@@bigshotz1240 definitely not I prefer the 10mm drop and highly resilient foam, alpha 3s, saucony speeds, Vaporfly 3s, and adios pro 3 all in my collection 😃
@@bigshotz1240 any reply to that comment you flog bag 😂😂
Thanks a lot for ur sufficiental information video❤ How do u think abt Pegasus Plus VS Invincible run series(3)? I am thinking it's just shoe weight and stability issues.
Invincible somewhat more stable and stiffer. Closer to Plus would be Vomero 17
@@RoadTrailRun Many thanks for ur reply! Please keep up the great work!!
Nice review! Wish I’d waited & bought these instead of Adidas Speed ultra not working for me
Which more cushiony super last or nimbus
Superblast
1:27 That pretty much describes how I feel about a lot of max cushion shoes on the market!
How soft is it compared to 860v13?
Sorry never ran v13 but I think it is softer now.
Just got the Sl2 and first thoughts are that they feel very similar to the Boston 12. But only if you land fore to midfoot as heavy runner. Boston 12 is fine if you get tired and heel strike(more versatile). Very rough upper and slightly smaller in size making them a little tight but ok. Hopefully the upper will break in. I bought them in pure white to maybe wear as holiday shoe but not good for walking. Will leave them for short recovery runs or sell.
Hi. A excellent comparison. My vote goes to adidas adizero SL2. Like from Spain(Europe). A nice weekend for everyone.
So you rate the Noosa Tri 16 higher, as a daily trainer, than the Novablast 4, Magic Speed 4, New Balance Rebel v4, and Hoka's Machs? I live in hilly Switzerland and will be doing 8-10 km run in the main, so the Noosa seems ideal based on your feedback.
For me yes. Also look at August releasing Topo Specter 2 and for flex for the hills Nike Pegasus Plus.
I just bought the Novablast 4 and love them for what it's worth. No way you could be disappointed with that shoe
Random question about Smartwool socks. Did the quality drop off for you? I have new ones which look worse after 1 run than my >5 year old ones. Edit: Are you wearing the Cold Weather ones?
Those are just the regular "run mid crew". I just got them, but they seem pretty good so far. I have a pair of "PHD Endurance" socks (I think that's what they're called) that I've had forever. But I can't really compare the durability against the new ones yet.
@@MikeP-RTR Thanks for the feedback. Ye I have the "PhD run" and the "athlete edition" socks and they've lasted forever. The new "run mid crew" seemed to get fuzzy real quick and are too soft.
When SL2 came out everyone was praising it. When Peg Plus came out everyone: "meh, high drop, thin forefoot, foam not exciting like back in 2017."
The SL1 was so bad the 2 feels like heaven
$$$$ talks. One company sponsored these CZcams creators by bringing them to their headquarters, paid for travel and entry to marathons. Nike did not.
The Pegasus plus deserves criticism at such a high price. The SL 2 is a bargain.
Love my SL but be warned the medial roll is prominent, if you don’t get up on your toes you may get some collapsing it’s super soft in the rear and super snappy in the front.
Soft and medial upper does not have as much support as Plus
Is the topo Spector 2 comparable(I know it’s a lower stack) but wondered if it would be used for the same purposes. Thanks
Topo lower drop at 5mm . Can be used for same purposes. Better choice for broader feet than either
How does the sl2 compare to the pegasus plus in terms of the energy return? I've heard that zoomx is a costly midsole to produce.
Great review, I have the Adidas SL2. Be aware that runs a half size short. Very flexible and makes the feet work 🙄. First time in years I need to avoid large rocks because they hurt my metatarsal in the SL2. Very light and very good energy return. ❤❤❤ One negative in the SL2 is that the upper is very hot and the sweat does not evaporate.
Brooks Hyperion 2, rebel v4 and Mach 6 are all uptempo
Only the Hyperion 2 has a 10mm drop like these two.
Long time shoe nerd. Been watching you, Kofuzi, BITR, Seth, etc... since 2018 ish. Just stopping by to say that I really enjoy your reviews. Great comparison! Excited to have the Turbo back.
Thanks!
Too bad seth doesn't really do shoe reviews anymore
How would the length of Topo Specter 2 compare with the sizing of something like Saucony, ASICS or Mizuno? I tried a Saucony Triumph 22 and size 13 was clearly too long, 12.5 was just right, but in the Mizuno Wave Rider 27, size 12.5 is too short, 13 just right for me. In ASICS, I usually go for 12.5.
Less about length than shape of front of toe box in those you mention. Broad and rounded here. I would lean 12.5
@@RoadTrailRun OK. Will do. Thank you so much. I go up half a size to size 13 in Mizuno and Puma partly because they seem to run a bit narrow. I like the wider toe box. I have a pair of Vivobarefoot Primus Trail in 12.5 and it fits great.
Yay! Another Mike review, awesome!! Plus1 for another followup review too, on a bit rougher terrain!
BTW comparison with other plated shoes would be nice, I'm thinking of the NF vectiv pro in particular!
@@rmsrmsrmsrms arghhh we still haven't been able to get a hold of test pairs!
Is the Profly+ foam in the X2 the same as the Peba in the X3?
No, the dual layer Profly from V1/2 is some type of EVA blend I believe. Cushy and responsive, but nowhere near the level of rebound from PEBA. V3 has a very different feel underfoot
@@MikeP-RTR interesting! Thank you!🙂. So this basically means the X3 is largely a no no for techy trails🧐.
@@wesleysundelson598 I wouldn't say that. It may not be a shoe for ripping tech terrain at high speeds, but it can handle the speeds you'd be running in a long-ish ultra. As I mention in the written review, this version seems like more of an advanced level shoe.
I bought cumulus 25 … n m glad after watching this
Wouldn't better comparable be other moderate stability shoes? Such as the GT2000 12 instead of the Kayano?
Yes that would have been a good comparison but my last GT 2000 was the 10
Any difference between 5 and 5x???
Hi, is this softer than More V5?
My left ear enjoyed this.
Dude! Great review. Thanks for all the detailed insightz, definitely looking forward to the release of these. Side note. Just wanted to say congrats on the Palisades win! And I didn't know you were a shoe reviewer 😂 we met/raced at Scout 50 this year, and you put on a show out there ! Cheers, bud!
What's up Cody! Correction - I took 2nd out at Palisades. I was going for it but just didn't have the same mojo I did out at Scout.
@MikeP-RTR scout was a wild day! You looked fantastic and light on your feet, man. Like a star.😅 and either way, congrats. 2nd is bold af. That's a race I wanna check out before or after Crazy Mountain . So many races, so little time.
Excellent! I bought the Salomon slab Genesis for swimrun after you advice. Love them. These x3 are on the top list for next shoe. You expertise and attention for details is world class, best trail shoes review on internet!
Great stuff, love this channel. Keep on moving! ❤
Good to know about the bigger volume. For Speedgoat 5 my wider feet like the wide (2E) option.
Speedgoats have been too narrow and never work for me. Too squeezy at the forefoot (haven't tried V6 yet). The shape of these is much better.
Great colorway. Pity you have to pay 275 dollars to get it. Hoka really needs to do a better job on that front. It might be a strategy to keep the price down, buying materials that no one else wants, but they’ve really missed the mark on color IMO on more of there popular styles. Glad to hear the initial impressions went well. Would be curious to see how the midsole compares to ZG2.
Surprised to hear a few ppl don't like the color/design. I think it's really eye-catching without being too over-the-top. It looks sweet in person. Do you mean Zegama 2?
@@MikeP-RTR yeah, I like this color way a lot actually …but some of the other colors they used on V2 model of tecton were just way too bright, and oddly combo’d, like little kids clothes or something. Even Mafate 4 hasn’t really done a good colorway yet IMO. (Sorry I’m a UX/UI designer and prob just being picky) Yeah, was referring to Zegama 2, if this is similar but lighter overall, that would be awesome.
@@tommilam6320 I kind of like the EVO Mafate throwback blue/yellow, but yea, the other colorways are blah
Curious about climbing in such a stiff shoe..... from a multi mile/kilo effort to a steeper 20'/7m climb out of a dry creekbed, I am always going to my metatarsals. I'VE tried shoes with stiff fore foot(s) on climbs and it usually means I have to start power hiki g.. what happens with these shoes?
Need to test, but I don't see any issue. Stiffness is on a similar level to previous Tectons and no issues with those.
Once these are available in the UK, I don't see any reason I won't buy a pair. They tick so many boxes for me as someone who already enjoys the X2
Thanks for the review!
Which feels more stable, Cyclone 2 or Specter 2?
Not question Specter 2
@@RoadTrailRun ok great. Thank you so much for such a fast answer. Much appreciated!
Does the Cyclone 2 have good stability in the heel area? I have the Triumph 20 which I like, but the heel is wobbly.
Specter 2 does. Cyclone 2 less so
@@RoadTrailRun thank you. I will buy Specter 2!
My left ear.
Good morning. Like from 🇪🇸 Spain. A nice weekend for everyone.
This "review" comes off sounding like a sales pitch. Spare us the hyperbole and emotionality. Sam and ONLY Sam needs to conduct these reviews for this channel. What's going on this channel? I hope Sam is doing well health-wise.
Sam here and doing just fine! Mike is enthusiastic about the update to truly is favorite shoe. His level of detail and depth of experience is amazing. For such a shoe Mike is the most appropriate tester for sure. Our styles may be different, yes, but RTR has many voices! Thanks for watching and commenting.
