Burnham, IL & Hammond, IN Trains 1986-1987
NS, CSS&SB, IHB, CSX, Amtrak, and Conrail. Several “bottle” (hot metal) trains are seen in these videos, as they were frequent users of the Conrail SC&S line - the Bernice Cutoff.
The Amtrak trains have appeared in some of my previous videos, but this will hopefully provide some additional context for them. Amtrak ran on the SC&S from Bernice to Colehour Jct.
Note that from April 27, 1986 to October 25, 1987 Amtrak referred to 317/318 (as well as 50/51) as “The Cardinal.” Here are the schedule references:

If you have the book "Amtrak in the Heartland" by Craig Sanders, this is discussed on page 215.
Burnham was the crossing of the Conrail (SC&S), C&WI, NS (NKP), CSS&SB, & B&OCT. At this time a C&WI single track was still in place, but was not used. The crossover that went over the NKP diamond once allowed the C&WI access to the B&OCT yard. The original Burnham tower (ex-PRR) had burned down about a decade earlier and at this time was a trailer, staffed by Conrail. The old tower was between the C&WI and the NKP, just west of the SC&S diamond. Also, at this time the South Shore Hegewisch station was a little further west than the current one. Burnham & State Line are just over a mile apart from each other. By this time State Line Tower was just a shell of its glory days. Despite this it was still in operation, armstrong levers and all.

There are a couple of small sections still intact, but most of it has been removed. Calumet Park to Bernice was removed a while back ~ 25-30 years ago, along with the PRR to Munster section that Amtrak used to access the Monon. Rails are still in place and used from Calumet Park to the B&OCT wye just south of Burnham. A recent photo shows the SC&S is out of service across the diamonds to 135th St. and looks like it might be removed in the near future. The rails are cut on the south side of Brainard Ave. Two blocks are still used from 135th St. to 132nd. North of there, the right branch (that part Amtrak used) is long gone to Colehour Jct. That section was removed about the same time as the south portion. It's now a bike trail from Wolf Lake up to Indianapolis Ave.

This may be a stupid question but does anybody know why the NYC built the Elkhart junction like that? With a diamond going from the middle track to the Kalamazoo branch? It wasn’t until recently that NS realigned the tracks

The origins go back to when the original mainline to Toledo went straight via Hillsdale (the "Old Road"). The CP 421 signal bridge east of the depot straddled the original track alignment. But, I believe it had something to do with the radius of the curve that connected the newer line (the current NS line) and the property lines of the railroad across Main St. The crossing was moveable frogs for many years and then Conrail replaced it with a diamond in the early 1990s. When NS redid the area in 2017, it allowed room for the Grand Elk turnout off of the new track 1 as well as for higher speeds.

Indiana Hi Rail was a pretty underrated short line. And now it’s gone the way of the Rock island

5:15 That lashup makes me think of a BN coal train in Pentrex's Best of the Midwest Volume II with one of those white face C30-7s leading. I haven't watched it in years, so I don't know if those are the same road numbers. 39:23 Nice Sears van

Strobe ditch lights on the BN unit! I've probably only seen a few other vids of them. Also, some great horns in this one. Definitely a few beautiful K5Hs
