Such creativity that they didn't even know they had.

Stephen Fry here perfectly encapsulates one of my most hated tricks teachers use. They ask for your ideas, then discount (‘shelve’) any perfectly reasonable idea you might have. They then try and nudge you towards their own idea, which may be no better than yours, or, sometimes worse. Hate them.

You think this is unique to English & Shakespeare? Think again! And spare a thought for poor Russian students stuck with exactly the same kind of teachers and several metric tons of Tolstoy on their desks... )) Professors/directors who do this kind of stuff seem to read from the same boring manual independent of the culture or language involved.. *shudders at the memories*

Nobody does this pretentious crap as well as these two. The tragedy is that although this is a wonderful skit, it is also true to life in some areas of the arts....

Is this a parody of the master classes with Trevor Nunn or John Barton? I would vote Trevor Nunn.

I think that a lot of British humour is exactly that. Life of Brian when he's painting "Romans go Home" and the sketch "What have the Romans done for us?" for example.

What a brilliant observation. Funny example of the kind of annoying way Shakespeare is taught. The bit about the way time is spelt is hilarious and apt. It is so presumptuous that Shakespeare meant what he wrote the way people have since claimed. Not just Shakespeare

Malicious schemers in several media organizations around the world are out to use me and control my life. They labelled me the "world" and say I am against "white teeth". And they have a secret electromagnetic over-the-air device that can trigger all reactions in the body, including disease symptoms and pain, to coerce me physically and physiologically. Somebody please help me. Please say no to torture and oppression and the media's secret electromagnetic offensive weapon.

Fry and Laurie totally brilliant, but Fry long ago sadly morphed into the very type of character he was always parodying. Still, good to see them when they were young and hungry.

Hugh Lauries' impression of a student in the headlamps of his tutors impossibly obvious questions is priceless. And Stephen Fry is, as ever, absolutely spot on. 'I think thats partly it, Hugh, but think' argh!
