Honestly, Davis was better as Raoul. Lawrence Anderson though definitely should have played the Phantom - what a smooth rich voice.
Francs pointing at Christine after being unmasked reminds me of Lon Cheney
I've sung with Grant in FL and seen him do "Music of the Night' many times, and he is a consummate professional.....he is completely invested in his characterization, so every syllable of every phrase is full of meaning......absolutely incredible performer, and a truly lovely person.....BRAVO, Grant!
From the few videos of him I've heard, I honestly think that I like his voice the best of all of them
If you listen to Mark and then Ben Crawford, you'll hear how ridiculous the casting had gotten in the last 5-10 years of the run. Quality way down with Ben. Sorry. He was terrible.

The first few replacements seem to have more closely emulated Michael Crawford vocally, not in sound necessarily but the pronunciation etc.
I've seen Phantom 16 times in NYC with many different performers playing the Phantom. David Gaines (in my opinion) was the absolute best. I was fortunate to meet him backstage.

this is crazy. I WAS AT this performance! I was 10 and it was my first time to ever see Phantom. my love for that show and many others was born that night. I would perform on this very stage less than a year later. so crazy random to find this audio!
I saw him live when he was Thomas James O’Leary’s understudy and he was great. Beautiful voice.

my dad & mom saw him back in 94 (before I was born) when he was touring in the usa, & my dad says of all the performances he's seen/actors he's heard play the phantom, grant norman is still his absolute favorite. a shame that they didn't do an official album with him, but I'm glad this recording exists for both of us to hear him (& me to imagine what he was like as the phantom)
Weak pop-voice miscast for the titular character. He actually would sound better as Raoul.

Incredible scene in every way! Franc's mastery of seduction, passion, yearning, and his understanding of the Phantom's love/desire for Christine are so brilliantly brought to life here. I could watch him in this scene over and over again. Always captivating. ❤
Damn, what a voice and characterization throughout this highlight reel with me wanting more! I was looking to find a full audio of Grant to listen to but settled on someone else and then came back to listen to the highlights! More please!

The way he belts “anywhere you go let me go too. Christine, that’s all I ask of …” I love the operatic side of Franc's voice, not to mention his high notes in “Music of the Night” which made tears fall from my eyes the 2 times I saw him in San Fran. These videos don’t do him justice. The sound live was even better.

I like TJO, but i’ll never understand why he was Phantom at the same time that Gary was Raoul. Gary is superior in every way.
Gary…last name? Also TJO has the second or third best PONR after Crawford (competition for me is Hugh Panaro) for having the sheer, somewhat unnaturally haunting and full-of-desire voice that I associate with the Phantom’s character. So he’s near-peak for me.

@@BeWiL0991 totally agree with you. TJO’s PONR still haunts me as an adult and I saw him as a kid!! I’ve seen many phantoms since, Howard, hugh, Ted Keegan, James romick, Ben Crawford. Tom was by far, the BEST.
I disagree. I saw both of them on stage and Tom’s tenor was booming yet tender and resonated through the theatre like nobody’s business. Gary’s was the perfect bariton Raoul. But I personally prefer the tenor phantoms period. And Gary was much more snarly in his final lair. Not my jam

Did they actually transpose MOTN for Grant, or is that due to the wear and tear of the recording?
I think it's just decay as there's a brief moment in the middle of the song where it's in the regular key. The Final Lair clips here have also been transposed up (and it's unlikely they'd do that in an actual performance) so it seems probable that the whole recording was affected.
He is one of the most Leroux-like Phantoms. His interpretation remains one of my favorites

He's my favorite Phantom, you have no idea. I sobbed at the end, he just wrecked me lol And for the record, he was my SECOND live Phantom, my 4th overall if you count both Steve Harley and Michael Crawford....so. Yes. And I've added at least 3 more Phantoms since. FAVORITE.

Even after all these years, Kevin Gray I think of my favorite Phantom so often. I am so thankful that I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at the Wang Center those many years ago. He was so kind and approachable and took the trouble to sign an extra program book many months later for a dear friend. You are in my thoughts and in the hearts of many.

Sandra Joseph wasn't on this tour in 1995. Has to be 1996 or early 1997...I would guess Boston or Detroit, this was the lead trio for both stops.
