Why Germany Had to Start the War
In 1914, Germany gave Austria-Hungary the so-called 'blank cheque' that allowed it to declare war on Serbia and thus plunge Europe into the First World War.
This video aims to be a short analysis of why Germany and Austria felt desperate enough to undertake this radical course of action in 1914, whilst knowing there was a good chance of it leading to war.

Austria forced their hand, and was the primary bungler(by intention) of the ultimatums sent to Serbia. Nobody but Austria actually wanted a war. They wanted either total serb submission or conquest for the murder of Franz Ferdinand.

Germans, particularly the Kaiser and Moltke wanted war. The Germans had long dreamed of lebensraum, drang nach Osten for which they had freikorps on the loose. When Austria sought to take more of Serbia in repraisal for the assassination of the Arch Duke they pointed out the alliances that would trigger a pan European war and the Germans said go ahead. Thereafter Germany declared war on Russia and on France. The ambitious Germans started the war all by themselves.

A couple men got very arrogant. That’s the one-sentence summary. They could have convened to talk it out like they had done in the past 50 years under the Concert. Instead, the Germans hedged their bets on continental supremacy when they were surrounded by enemies and rivals on all sides. Smarter option would be to convene to address the alliance situation.

At 0:19. Rigid Spanish court etiquette? Fascinating. So the Spanish consorts of the Holy Roman Emperors of the 1600s left a legacy that was more than the gargantuan dowries of Mexican and Peruvian treasures they brought over to Vienna. They also brought the cold and sterile etiquette of the Spanish court. All that religious solemnity and dourness must’ve been annoying.

4:20 a buffer state? Napoleon III must not have been a very good negotiator. Austria and Prussia probably would have conceded the Left Bank of the Rhine, territory that France had occupied for some 20 years during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, if France had pushed hard for it. Immediately after the battle of Konigratz, for example, if Napoleon III had approached Prussia, and threatened to enter the War on Austria's side, Prussia would likely have had no choice but to make concessions to France.

As well as Silesia, a logical claim for a victorious Austria would be Prussia’s Catholic territories, which included the lower Rhineland, Munster and Westphalia. Metternich’s consent at the Congress of Vienna to Prussia taking Catholic German territories in the first place seems uncharacteristic of the Habsburgs, as the traditional leaders and defenders of Catholicism in Germany. But Vienna’s urgent need for cash and the rich revenues of northern Italy seemed to outweigh all other considerations.

  • @TenOrbital

France taking Belgium would be complicated by the treaty commitments that brought Britain into WW1. Although I suppose if the other guarantors, France, Prussia and Russia supported a French claim, there wouldn’t be much Britain and Austria could do.

The trying to dominate the world through Military Power ended in 1945 Britain has always been in a position to defend itself from any military threat and from any belligerent and had 8,586,000 men for military service at the end of WW2. USA 8 Million Russia 11 Million. After WW2 the British secured Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia and many strategic points around the globe, they got involved in Korea and got on with business, as America got bogged down in Vietnam after stabbing the French in the back. The Anglo Agreement created by the Atlantic Charter during WW2 began the process of co-operation but in 1946 the McMahon Act put it in jeopardy and it was not until the 1962 Nassau Agreement, that the USA finally saw sense and closer co-operation developed. By then the Empire had ring fenced it's assets in off-shore tax havens and since 1958 Global trade routes have been secured through The International Maritime Organization in London. It was only the threat of a nuclear war that stopped the British and French at Suez but the point was made, just as it was in the Cuban missile crisis. The UK is the world leader in Soft Power but keeps a large cricket bat close by, as the Americans are useless at it.

What we've read since is a one sided interpretation so, suspicious, when the 100th anniversary of the war happened, I began reading all the THICK TOMES about it and guess what kept popping up between the lines? PERFIDIOUS ALBION manipulating and trying to enter the war on false pretenses. It did so, see Belgium BULL treaty, and when it was over the world imposed everything upon GERMANY, it being the only Triple Alliance power LEFT. The evil results of this false punishment led to suffering and yes, HITLER, a demon dedicated to vengeance for Germany's foul post war representation and treatment. The same allied LIARS who punished Germany for THEIR collective sins also managed to sew the seeds for future Middle Eastern disaster. We see the results of the stupid English and French diplomats TO THIS DAY, as war followed war and added terroristic animalism to our world.
