In early 1975, Minoru Hayashi established Kabushiki Gaisha Dōmu. Dōmu literally translates to “child’s dream.” And considering Hayashi’s end goal, it was an appropriate name. Race car construction might not have been in the cars, but perhaps he might have better luck with road vehicles. He and his team set out to develop, build, and sell their very own model: the Zero.
Dome started in a section of the Hayashi Racing headquarters. There was a blood bond between the two firms. Minoru’s cousin Shoichi established the company, which built its own race cars and even fielded a team at the time. It was probably known for its iconic wheels, though.
Minoru Hayashi had years of experience designing race machines, but creating a production car came with its own unique challenges. A Hemmings article has an excerpt from the series A Quiet Greatness: Japan’s Most Astonishing Automobiles for the Collector and Enthusiast. One passage details some of the roadblocks that the team encountered, which included creating the bodywork itself, crafting the massive front screen, and ironing out the bugs in the retractable headlights.
Hayashi and his team had wrapped development up by 1978, but the trials were far from over. Now they’d have to display the Zero in front of thousands of showgoers in Geneva. Dome’s fate was now in the hands of the public. So how did they take to it? Quite well, in fact. There weren’t too many other high-profile debuts at this show as far as I could tell, so the Zero had much of the spotlight to itself. The company also received 20 preorders on the spot. This would give the emerging automaker an early boost, provided that the certification process went well.

The production 2023 Nissan Z debuted on August 17, 2021, on Nissan's CZcams channel. Its lineup was even more streamlined than the 370Z’s. At just under $41,000, the Sport served as the RZ34’s entry point. Above this was the Performance grade at about $51,000. While it does command a premium, the model does add a fair bit to the car. It included a mechanical LSD, unique 19-inch wheels, aluminum...

    I had a 1980 280ZX. Gorgeous car. It was black with gold trim, tan leather interior and a t bar roof. Sadly it was not designed for the Canadian market. By 1990, it had rusted through completely. It was game over when the strut towers rusted away from the body.

    agree with afoolandhismoneychannel. I bought a '82 silver/black ZX in '93, expecting it to be a 'nicer', maybe quieter version of my '75 280. I was right, but I wasn't expecting a Buick. The change from McPherson strut to trailing arm rear suspension may have solved some NVH issues but it was no longer a sports car. Driven even moderately hard, the softness of the back end, in my opinion made it unusable on a twisty country road. I tried better shocks, but it was what it was, as the commenter said, for all the right and wrong, reasons. Great looking car, I kept it for 3 years and sold it way too soon, it was an immaculate low mileage cream puff from CO. Great to look at, not fun to drive. Was it the 'worst' Z ever? For me, yes, but I've only had 2. Still have the '75.

    I bought a new 1977 280z and kept it for 4 years. Traded it in for a new 81zx. The zx is absolutely the worst Z ever made. It’s not a sports car, it just looks like one. Kept it 4 months and bought a good used 78z. The zx rides like a tiny Cadillac coupe de ville. Horrible car.

Hell no. Hell no not now and HELL TO THE NO in the 1970s. Walk over to the US Navy base and get a 455 cu-inch V-8, someone over there is bound to own a 1971 Firebird Trans Am. As referred to in the video, the Avanti was meant to be a "halo car" meaning to get attention and get people to the dealerships. And it did do that. They didn't expect to sell many as the price was the same as a Cadillac. Instead, once people got to the dealership they were expected to buy the regular lineup. People DID come to the dealerships but were simply afraid to buy from the shaky company. Also, at first, they really had no cars for the dealerships and flew the same two cars from town to town in cargo plane. They would set up bleachers, give out free "Avanti" stadium seat cushions, and had a lot of hoopla introducing the car. Then they would fly off with this "Avanti Airlift" marketing project to do the same in another city.

  • @trainliker100
    @trainliker100 Před 12 dny

    You might note there is no external trunk latch. Instead, there is a handle down low at the left side of the rear seat. It pulls on a wire cable connected to the latch. There is a small panel on the deck below the rear window where advertising shows a woman able to have access to move things to and fro from the trunk from inside the passenger cabin. That really isn't very practical, and the real reason was to provide access, via a long screwdriver, to the trunk latch should the release cable break. Otherwise, you would have to cut a hole in the trunk floor to get to it.

  • @trainliker100
    @trainliker100 Před 12 dny

    Another safety feature was the gas tank location. It is a rectangular box behind the rear seat. At the usual gas tank location under the trunk is the spare tire. It is accessed by a round removable panel that is part of the trunk floor. So, in a rear end collision, the first thing hit won't be the gas tank. Seatbelts were also standard which was not yet the case in all cars as seat belts were not yet federally mandated. I believe there was a "seatbelt delete" option, or perhaps that option to delete just the rear seat belts.

    For the Starliner shown early in the video, you might notice the three pointed star logo, especially at 2:16. Mercedes-Benz told Studebaker that it resembled their three pointed emblem too much and could not use it. Studebaker obliged removed the downward pointing leg making it a V instead of a tri-star. Interestingly, Studebaker became the distributor for Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. and Canada from 1957-1963. And the door locks in the Avanti are Mercedes-Benz cone style door locks. These were better door locks than the typical and part of a safety improvement.
