    I personally prefer Mamoru Oshii's other Part 6 episode "The Killers in the Diner" a lot more than "Darwin's Bird". I feel like the story feels much more like a Lupin III episode with a very clever concept: Lupin and his gang try to find and steal a copy a famous book by acting out the story themselves. it was a lot of fun, and a great tribute to Ernest Hemingway. In fact, I was almost fooled by Lupin and Jigen's disguises in that episode (more so Lupin) because of the way Kanichi Kurita and Akio Otsuka changed their voices. They sounded so unlike Lupin and Jigen that I was impressed when they started talking normally again.

    As far as early adult-oriented anime, Tezuka made a trilogy of films (Cleopatra, 1001 Nights and Belladonna of Sadness) which were released in the late 60s through early 70s. Those are the earliest I can think of. Adult-oriented anime didn't really seem to take off until the OVA boom of the 80s.

    Question: When you reach Fuma Conspiracy are you going to mention Shin Lupin III Chapter 190? Because I've heard the film continues where that chapter left off, with Lupin dying at the end of it, and being revealed to still be alive in Fuma. You didn't mention this fact in the last video because the chapter has not been translated, nor fanslated either, so few people knew about it, however somebody else mentioned it on your older Fuma video on the old channel. You didn't heart or reply to that comment so I'm not certain if you saw it or not, however, I think you should mention chapter 190 in the updated version, even if it is oretty much just a footnote in the grand scheme of things, I feel it deserves to be mentioned, especially since I can't think of another Lupin film that's connected to a manga chapter this way

    I'm fairly certain that the wine did not get switched, the wine which Lupin stole simply went bad over the years, where as the new wine tasted fine as it had not spoiled. And I always assumed that the reason Tiffany wants to broadcast Lupin is because she thinks the publicity of being robbed by a famous person would cause the TV ratings to more then reimburse her, and perhaps also make a sizeable profit. Honestly, with the sometimes cartoonish world of Lupin in mind, I think Tiffany's plan would've worked if Lupin hadn't decided to wait till after the crew left to pull his heist

    As someone who never really is a fan of Holiday episodes I must say I still find enjoyment in both of them. But the thing that bugged me about EP 64 was that it felt like a massive Product Placement with Tiffanys stuff being so pretty, and oh look how well secured the stuff is and how luxury everything is. While the other one was just a poor look at another nation. Another thing that really bugged me in EP64 was that the writers created a problem so big they had to bullshit their way out of it by intreducing a random scientist the gang meets while fishing (In December while being dressed like it's Miamy.) to give them some stuff. I like the stuff with the train and Goemon slicing the house more cause, sure it's dumb but it feels better built up than the other stuff. But where I can give EP64 a point is that it stuck more with me than Ep 12. And when it comes to comparing EPs against each other, I think it would be really interesting to see you discuss both Part 2 Miyazaki Eps, cause a lot of people usally call them their favorite Part 2 eps.

    You just caught me about to watch the Part 4 Finale, great timing! On the front of both episodes, I liked Episode 12 a lot more than Episode 64. Like you said Episode 64 felt really unfocused and a little dumb where I found Episode 12 to actually a really fun episode. I loved the big scene in the wine cellar, Zenigata was pretty fun, and it did have the better Christmas touch even if not great. Maybe my opinions will soften since it's been a hot minute since I watched both episodes, but I would still put on Episode 12 if I was in the mood for some simple Lupiny fun.

    While I think the concept is really cool, I've never been able to gel with Beware the Time Machine much at all and as a result it's my least favorite Part 1 episode. The explanations behind stuff seems too messy while also trying to seriously analyze his methods, it just never clicked with me. If it had more Lupin and Fujiko character dynamics in it in that church scene, if it got to delve more into that, I might rank it higher. In contrast I think A Hitman Sings the Blues is an absolute masterful episode. Lupin and Fujiko's dynamics play out beautifully here, seeing how Lupin would respond in a position where Fujiko doesn't have her usual agency. Fujiko, at least in Part 1, doesn't spend much time in damsel positions and is able to have very equal footing with Lupin on most occasions. That's what I love about their rivalry as criminals, as it really does feel like a toss up as to which could win. Fujiko has a sense of pride about her plans to one up Lupin that screws her over at times, while Lupin thinking too much with his other head puts him on similar faulty footing. But their relationship as lovers in comparison to their rivalry is what I yearn for most when seeing this pair given highlights and this episode does that in spades for me, while also having this suave attitude to its action scenes, with a touch of tragedy that I can't help but compare to my favorite dramatic episodes of Cowboy Bebop. Sure, Fujiko is not given much direct agency at all, but it's different and more endearing than most damsel in distress stories end up being for me due to the fact that Fujiko is just as capable as Lupin, just not invincible. As a side note I can't help but watch my favorite Lupin film, Mystery of Mamo, and its Lupin and Fujiko scenes as being a sort of expansion upon how this episode plays with their relationship, only with both trading a hero and damsel role between each other through the film, at least in my eyes.

    I love this video and this channel. Keep up the excellent Lupin III content. Lupin III is massively underrated in the west and especially part 1. I like the Osumi episodes the best. I like the episode with Pycal and the first episode. When he dropped the wires into the water I instantly understood the coolness appeal of Lupin’s character.

    I gave this film a watch several days back, and I thought it was pretty good for an anime-to-live action adaptations go, though my favorite of these would go to the French City Hunter film called Nicky Larson and the Cupid’s Perfume. That film surprisingly nailed CH to a tee.

  • @super_carson
    @super_carson Před 8 měsíci

    Good video. Some interesting takes, but they made all since by the way you explained it. "The Man Called the Magician" is a pretty good episode, I like that the episode wanted to take its time to solidify Pycal being a force to be reckoned with with Lupin and Jigen not being able to make a dent no matter how hard they tried to hurt him. I liked the mystery elements about it ‘cause we don’t really get his deal and then his secret is revealed halfway through the episode. it’s also very slowed paced which I can’t say that to most of the later entries in the franchise. I have my problems with it, for starters while Pycal is a pretty good villain and intimidating, he’s not much of a dynamic character and his writing is pretty flat. Also, the episode really tried setting up the octopus as a gag, but I didn’t feel like the “payoff” really justified warranting the amount of setup it got. Plus how Lupin actually figures out Pycal’s secret is a bit too convenient. And one last little nitpick I have is they don’t explain why these two guys at the beginning tried to kill Pycal and what their beef was with him. Overall it’s honestly a good episode, but it’s still not a go-to episode of Part I for me and it’s more so on the lower end of Part I episodes for me even if I don't dislike it. Then there's the fact that Mamoh and Pycal get brought back "The Elusiveness of the Fog" and "Return of Pycal" with one actually enhancing it's returning character and one ruining the returning character, So i'm interested to say that you have to say to that when we get there

    just watched the movie and it's better than what I expected. Like other people said, it felt like Jigen's episode in Part 4. The action was more or less decent. Since the episode solely focused on Jigen, it was a hard-boiled story without any mention of Lupin, Zenigata, Fujiko, Goemon. But I loved the subtle reference at the very last scene which strongly suggested that it was Lupin himself who came to greet Jigen. FYI, other than Lupin III live action movie, Jigen is the 2nd Lupin III franchise character to get a live action adaptation , after the Inspector Zenigata live action TV series(without Lupin gang) few year ago.

    While I agree with you that it was an extremely weak cagliostro retread, I still like it and appreciated the ending scene in the treasure room. It is a long build up to it tho. I think literally any of the rest of the cast would've been a better fit here than Jigen tho.

  • @HunterTechTen

    When I first started getting into Lupin through the TMS YT uploads, this was the episode (specifically the ending) that really solidified my interest in the franchise. In retrospect, I can see how it plays better for those who are unfamiliar with the series, since I wouldn't have thought to compare it with Cagliostro as a result of not having seen it at the time. The complaint about a lack of proper scares is definitely a curious one, since I do think this kind of tone harkens back to a time when spooky media was more than just the straight up horror films we only sort of get now. I like having something that fits the season, but generally aims more to be a romp than give genuine thrills. Though I suppose that more speaks to your point then if it never occurred to me to classify this as a proper horror episode until now, so I suppose it could've done more work to achieve the vibe. Been following your Lupin work for a while now, and am happy to watch more of it when they release!

  • @super_carson

    My review of the episode *before* I watch the video: It's an alright episode, the backgrounds and environments pop-off a lot more than the typical Part 4 episode and I guess I do somewhat like the Scooby-Doo-esc subversion story they decided to go for, but that's when the episode tries to be emotional towards the ending. While I do wanna feel for it, it kinda just comes out of nowhere and feels a bit forced within the narrative since it barely has any time to sink in because the episode was too caught up with the stupid “Mama Gang” who don’t contribute anything to the narrative other than an action sequence towards the end of the episode because apparently we should have that rather than cutting that to develop the emotional beats. As is, it feels like another example of how you need to make priorities within a 22 minute time-frame and trying to squeeze certain elements in will unfortunately have a domino effect on other elements. Overall it’s not the worst episode out there, it’s alright and has good elements, but I wish it is just more scary in certain places, The Mama Gang feeling like a weak excuse to have a climatic action sequence rather than being actual charming or memorable characters, and the emotional beats in the ending feeling undercooked since the episode didn’t give it any breathing room despite me wanting to be invested, and it just not being very funny which is a bit weird. It’s not an inherently bad episode, but it’s a pretty mediocre one. After I watched the video: wow... uhhh... didn't expect my opinions to almost lineup with yours.. but that's cool I guess.
