The Amphibious culture - historical floods in the Netherlands
Floods are world wide increasing while adaptation to floods is decreasing. In this video Petra van Dam uses the Netherlands as a case study to demonstrate how that culture was until quite recently “amphibious” and adapted to flooding. She will also highlight the fact that present day modern society is not so well adapted to flooding and why.
Petra van Dam is Professor in water management history at the Free University Amsterdam.
This Video was recorded during the first workshop of the Environmental Histories Network at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire. The Network was a multi-disciplinary partnership that ran from 2010 until 2012 and was funded under the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Environmental Change Networks scheme.

I started my apprenticeship with Clark Hawthorn in Wallsend in 1981 and done my first year at the British Shipbuilders Training School in Hebburn, it was brand new and I used to cycle from North Shields through the pedestrian tunnel or in the winter on the mid tyne ferries, but its all gone now along with Clark Hawthorne along with all the other shipbuilding and engineering jobs.

I find these documentaries on the decline of shipbuilding and heavy industry in this country etc to be difficult to watch and that is speaking as someone who grew up in London. So many lost opportunities that everyone regrets now. What a waste of talent and spirit.

As the son of a man that worked in the shipyards as they started to fall apart this doc hit hard. Really well put together, it really stirred up feelings that had long been buried 😢

One of the ships built on the Tyne carried me from Australia through the Pacific and canal to England back in 1967, the Northern Star Ocean Liner was the ship, some may remember her.

I have no idea where anybody got the idea as to Consett being the largest steel mill in Europe. It was not even the largest in the UK. I used to work there.
