#metalcasting #atomicage #midcenturymodern #lavalamp In this video I explore ways of upcycling a cheap lava lamp to give it a Mid Century Modern/Atomic Age appearance. I'm surprised you didn't leave the wetted wallpaper glue-side up on a flat surface, and bring the tabletop down on top of it, then just compress the whole thing flat. Innovative solution with that powder coating jig - the finished table looks mid-century great!

    Very nice work. Very interesting approach to simulating the laminate. Thanks for the Spoonflower tip. Although I like the aesthetic not exactly my cup of tea. I think I prefer your art-deco pieces. Are the flora all "native" to Australia. Over the years I have been surprised to learn that most of the plants around my house are not native. I have some Ivey that is now considered "invasive".

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58 Před 3 dny

      My wife belongs to a group called Urban Wildlife Gardens. Their mission is to encourage people to plant local native plants to encourage wildlife back into urban spaces. It turns out that not all "native" plants are considered to be "native to the area". We had planted some native species that turned weedy because they were from a different habitat and they can outcompete local species. But, you can go to a native nursery and buy these same plants and put them in your garden thinking that you are doing the right thing. We planted a single tree that multiplied so rapidly that we had to get the chainsaw out and take out every single tree. It had also spread to our neighbours place. I think we have it under control now but it could easily have gotten out of hand. The plants I showed in the video are in fact local indigenous species and they do thrive in our climate but they won't spread in an uncontrolled way. Regards, Mark

      There must have been so much of that style of furniture around after the 1970's and I am guessing that most of it was tossed out. Evidently, it is now considered cool again. Regards, Mark

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58 Před 3 dny

      Welcome aboard. The makers plate was laser etched from a two ply plastic which is sold specifically for laser etching. It is available in a wide range of thicknesses and colour combinations. The top layer is very thin so you can engrave through it with fairly low power so you don't scorch the surrounding surface. After engraving you use a vector cut to separate the plate from the stock. It looks like metal but it's just a metallic foil surface. Regards, Mark.

    I love Gorilla Glue but well understand choosing something else in this case. My work has devolved from furniture construction to mostly repairs, so storage of an open container has become an issue. Looks like you use the 'squeeze-out' method to exclude air. I use a large 3/8" drive socket and invert the bottle so the air (and the dried crust) is effectively under the liquid glue in use. The cap is a snug fit diagonally across the square drive. Not perfect, but it works for me. Really enjoy your channel- cheers!

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58 Před 4 dny

      That Gorilla glue is great for some applications but I don't think I have ever used up a whole container. It nearly always turns solid no matter how careful I am to squeeze out the air. I wasn't going to risk it squeezing out onto the wallpaper and I couldn't think of a way of masking it successfully. Regards, Mark

      @@thehobbymachinistnz Milford Sound could best be described as wild and moody. The rain started as we crossed the divide and the waterfalls were everywhere. We got quite wet but we were told it rains two days out of three so I guess it was inevitable. We are flying home from Christchurch. We watched a film called "The Convert" a few months ago. It was filmed around Whatipu Beach just south of Piha. We had been to Piha and the beach looked very similar to the locations in the film. We really enjoyed the film but for some reason I get very emotional whenever I hear any Maori language or song. The Haka really sets me off. We went to Te Papa in Wellington last week and there was a feature on a Waka journey recreating a voyage 50 years ago. I must say it stirred a lot of emotions in me. I have no ethnic connection with the Maori but my father used to play records with Maori song. He was quite racist towards the Maori but he admired their culture. Go figure! Regards, Mark

    This is interesting and instructional to watch. I like the way you attached the mounting plates to the hairpin legs while maintaining the compound angle, the legs are splayed... yes? Why did you choose to not recess the mounting plates into the table like the example shown at about 0:53. What is the table height? Is it being dictated by the size of your powder coat oven? Interesting build for sure, thanks. Yes, I prefer a bunch of 30 min ish videos with lots of detail.

      The height of the legs was dictated by the space between the chairs where it will be situated. I will show the finished project in the room with the chairs in the final episode due out on Saturday. I just got lucky with the fit inside the powder coat oven. As it turns out, many of those guitar pick tables were proportioned more like coffee tables. Generally longer, wider and lower. If the one I made was any taller it might start to look a bit disproportionately tall. I didn't consider recessing the mounting plates. From a normal standing position, they are not particularly visible. The legs are splayed with the contact point at the bottom of the leg coincident with the outer edge of the table top. There are many ways to skin a cat, but I suggest that your pump mount is excessively elaborate. I suggest that : 1. the copper tube should be flared at the pump end to prevent chaffing of the electrical wires as it exits the tube. 2. the mounting of the pump could be by way of a 6mm steel rod silver soldered to the pump end of the copper tube and in line with the tube, at one end and to a curved plate at the other. 3. the curved plate is to be a snug fit to the pump body and held to the pump by a hose clamp. cheers.

      Thanks. In hindsight, there were oversights and workarounds but the whole build was one big experiment. It's always a case of "do I now go back and review and rebuild the sub assemblies" but given that it just works as it is I don't really have the inclination to mess with it. I have used the burner a lot since completing it and although the lighting process can be finicky, once everything is hot it just works well and there is just enough capacity in the blower and the fuel pump to fine tune things to be efficient. The tab on the side of the foundry body is a good feature to position the lid in teh closed position. However this results in a tab protruding up when the lid is open. this may be a hazard r may get in the way when using the foundry in the open position. I suggest that it is better to secure the tab to the underside of the lid, does the same thing but is safer and out of the way.

      True, and indeed the CZcamsr I stole the idea from made the same suggestion but so far it has not been an issue. Regards, Mark

    In the mid 1950’s I apprenticed in my grandfather’s cabinet makers shop. We built booths for restaurants,and bars. We also built shelving and cabinets.only the high end customers ordered hard wood with beautiful natural finishes. Most everything was finished in Formica. You could get ANY color at pattern you wanted and, it was cheap. Now, it’s hard to find and expensive.

      I am wondering if cabinet makers will need to go back to using formica and laminates now that engineered stone is now banned due to the silicosis epidemic. It was a good product and it had it's day in the sun. Regards, Mark

    Hmmm... 10 and 18mm plywood should be the standard thickness (also 20 and 8). Just easier to glue them up, compared to thinning the citchen top Probably more expensive... And... thank you for bringing back some nice memories from 60's. Those washers and screws...

      I did try to find some small sheets of MDF and plywood in sizes that would make up the thickness I needed. However the range is limited and I would have had to buy full sheets. Also, the surface is never as flat as you would like with plywood. The kitchen benchtop already had a nice flat melamine surface, and it was free! I was lucky enough to be given a big box of vintage nickel plated slotted head screws. They were all mixed up but they are great for older style furniture. Regards, Mark
