In this episode, we discuss Stevie Wonder's incredible 4-album run in the early/mid 1970s, establishing him as among the greatest songwriters in the history of popular music. But it begs the question: is it better to burn out than fade away? It's a question that cuts across music genres and eras. And it may shed some light on why David Bowie career retrospectives largely missed the mark. To hea...

Season 2 Episode 3 On this episode we kick off our featured 3-part series for Season Two this time covering music from Africa. Beginning in Senegal, we'll talk about and listen to Youssou N'Dour, Baba Maal (who is not from Wakanda), and the band Toure Kunda. A special shout-out to Peter Gabriel, who first opened the door for us in the West (well, for me, at least) to experience various African ...

Season 2 Episode 4: An episode dedicated to the late, great Mick Karn. From his start with post-punk band Japan, to his collaborations with Gary Numan, Peter Murphy, and his old bandmate David Sylvian, we track Mick's growth as an artist and his continuing efforts to expand the palette for bass players. A challenging listen to be sure, but well worth your time!

Season 3 Episode 3: Edwin Starr and Percy Sledge are often viewed as "one-hit-wonders," in large part because their careers were each defined by a massive hit. The truth, however, is that these were accomplished artists with more substantial recording careers than they are credited with. It is time to change the narrative! Reviewing the careers of Starr and Sledge also gives us a chance to comp...

It's because Mick was a singular talent. In the 80s , the older guys and instructors that were teaching us teens to play bass were the "Jaco generation " . We youngsters were definitely in awe, but Japan , and Mick were more contemporary to our ears. Mick , Pino , Mark King....these were the guys we were trying to be like. And now that we're in our 50s , and with the advent of streaming services and CZcams, we can finally share this stuff. Some of Micks later work , like JBK were hard to find. Mick's reputation is finally having a renaissance, with players young and old discovering or rediscovering him....
